Process for the production of a synthetic tanning agent. It has been found that a high-quality, new synthetic tanning agent is obtained if the 2-naphtholsulfonic acid obtained by treating 2-Naphtho.l with sulfonating agents with 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfone in acidic solution together with formaldehyde in the Heat condenses.
The amounts of the starting materials are chosen so that there are 1 to 2 moles of sulfone per 2 moles of naphtholsulfonic acid and formaldehyde. For example, one works in an aqueous acidic solution at 90 to 100, but higher temperatures can also come into consideration, for example those from 1.00 to 115.
The new tanning agent produces strong, yellowish-brown to red-brown precipitates in aqueous glue and gelatin solutions and is able to quickly tan animal skin in a moderately acidic solution. It delivers high-quality leather of good standing, beautiful fullness and excellent yield, so that it can almost or completely replace vegetable tanning agents. He can also be used together with vegetable tanning agents; it also accelerates the tanning process and delivers lighter leather than if the vegetable tanning agents are used alone.
Even in connection with sulphite cellulose lye, the tanning agent largely retains its excellent properties, so that it is possible in this way to use such spent lye in a beneficial way for leather production.
Example: 144 parts of 2-naphthol are treated with 144 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid at 120 for about 1 hour. As soon as a sample has become soluble in water and so on, the resulting melt is diluted with 200 parts of water after cooling, and 250 parts of 4 are stirred into the solution.
4'-dioxydiphenyl sulfone. and lets drip 110 parts of 30% aqueous formaldehyde into the mixture at 90 to 100 with stirring and reflux cooling in the course of half an hour. The heating is continued until the sulfone has dissolved and the formaldehyde odor has almost or completely disappeared.
After cooling, the mixture is neutralized with ammonia and acidified with an organic acid (formic acid, acetic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid). The tannin that partially precipitates is dissolved again by adding water. A tanning agent with excellent properties is thus obtained.
