Process for the production of a lightfast tanning agent. The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a light-fast tanning agent, characterized in that a raw cresol sulfonic acid-containing dioxyphenyl cresyl sulfone mixture, made from raw cresol and phenol, is subjected to partial sulfonation and then with urea and formaldehyde, with at least 1 mol of urea 2 molecules of form aldehyde are used, condensed in a weakly acidic solution below the boiling temperature until a water-soluble condensation product is obtained which, after setting for a weakly acidic reaction,
Bare turned into white, full leather with very good lightfastness.
Example: The dioxyphenylcresylsulfone mixture containing crude cresol sulfonic acid used for the condensation is prepared as follows: 400 parts of crude cresol DAB IV are sulfonated with 400 parts of monohydrate for 1 hour at 105 and then the sulfonation water in vacuo at 120 to 125 distilled off. For sulfone formation, at 125 C, after the sulfonation mixture has been completely drained,
190 parts of phenol are slowly sucked in underneath the surface and the excess phenol is distilled off with the water of reaction.
100 parts of the above mixture are heated with 20 parts of monohydrate for 3 hours to 110 to 115 C, after cooling from diluted with 50 parts of water and concentrated with conc. Ammonia neutralized to such an extent that an amount of the resulting solution corresponding to 100 g of the undiluted mixture, mixed with 67 cm @ n / 1 sodium hydroxide solution, reacts neutrally on Congo paper. 18 parts of urea and 20 parts of 30% formaldehyde are added to the solution, which has been neutralized to a weakly acidic reaction, and the mixture is stirred at 60 to 65.degree.
After 2 hours, a further 20 parts of 30% formaldehyde are added and this addition is repeated after a further 2 hours. Sometimes the reaction mixture becomes cloudy, but becomes clear again after a while. One condenses. about 4 hours at 60 to 65 C, until a sample, placed in twice the amount of water, remains clear when standing. It is then acidified with 3 parts of oxalic acid which has been dissolved in 0 parts of water.
