Method and device for emitting optical signals in the dark, especially when there is a danger from the air: So far, there have been signal devices which light up continuously in the dark, i.e. emit visible light signals, and thereby indicate (e.g. to the driver of a locomotive) whether a path is free or not . There are also signal devices in which the signal device itself is not equipped with a light source, the signal rather only appears when visible light falls on the device. Such a signal device is, for example, the well-known cat eye.
In the previously known Signalvor directions, however, permanently visible light has to be used in some form, either on the signal device or on the vehicle (headlight), because this is the only way the signal comes about. Such light sources are undesirable when there is a risk of airborne danger, since the attacker is also able to recognize his targets or important processes through the light source.
The subject matter of the invention is a method for emitting optical signals in the dark, in particular during a danger from the air, which is characterized in that rays from a radiation source that is invisible in the dark are thrown onto a signal transmitter that is invisible in the dark and only when it is noticed the rays come into action. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the method according to the invention. The signaling device illuminated by the invisible radiation source can, for example, consist of fluorescent substances or be provided with such. In this case, the radiation source must emit invisible ultraviolet light.
Such an example embodiment = form of the method according to the invention can, for. B. be used in the following cases: 1. Instead of a previously used continuously illuminated railway signal device, the same device is not luminous but is arranged with fluorescent surfaces. On the other hand, the locomotive has a headlamp that emits invisible ultraviolet light. If the beam of the ultraviolet headlight hits the signal, which it must inevitably follow when driving the route, the fluorescent surface lights up for as long as it is hit by the ultraviolet headlight beam.
The reverse application is also possible, but deviates from the previously used signal form in that an ultraviolet headlight would have to be installed in place of the signaling device. - If a fluorescent surface is attached near the driver's cab of the locomotive and this is hit by the ultraviolet headlight, so it must light up and display an agreed signal. This signal would not be displayed if, for example, the ultraviolet headlight was dimmed by a flap placed in front of it. Of course, this type of signal form can also be used in numerous other areas. The obvious presen- tation because of the invention was explained here on well-known signaling devices.
2. As far as buoys (light buoys) have to give signals for shipping, they could also be provided with fluorescent surfaces instead of permanently visible light, which, as already described, only light up when they are illuminated by the ultra violet headlights to be attached to the watercraft to be hit. This device, especially to be used in war, could be camouflaged by using fluorescent colors that show an agreed color tone only in ultraviolet light, but different color tones when emitted by visible light. 3.
A patrol who has to explore a path can mark the path with the signs necessary for orientation for the troops, for example with fluorescent chips or tablets, so that the advancing troop carrying a device for generating invisible ultraviolet light is carried along using these symbols
