De nombreux produits de grande consom mation, et en particulier des produits hygros- copiques tels que le tabac par exemple, exi gent pour leur emballage des récipients dans lesquels ils peuvent être scellés et conservés pendant un temps illimité sans que leur état varie d'une façon appréciable quelles que soient les températures, pressions et condi tions d'humidité auxquelles le paquet est sou mis; ces récipients doivent pouvoir être éta blis à l'aide d'un seul flan constitué par une ou plusieurs épaisseurs de matières flexibles telles que le papier, le clinquant, etc.;

Les bandes 34 peuvent être constituées sur le flan pendant l'opération d'impression des vignettes ou motifs de @1'étiquette ou, si on le désire, pendant la conversion du flan en paquet. Un fer plieur 35 (fig. 12), de largeur sensible ment égale à celle des parois 22b, est déplacé transversalement à l'extrémité de la boîte dans un plan parallèle à la paroi extrême 30, de façon à plier la patte 32 suivant la ligne de pliage ;
Container and method for its manufacture. This invention comprises a container, as well as a process for its manufacture.
Many consumer products, and in particular hygroscopic products such as tobacco for example, require for their packaging containers in which they can be sealed and stored for an unlimited time without their condition varying greatly. appreciably regardless of the temperatures, pressures and humidity conditions to which the package is subjected; these containers must be able to be established using a single blank consisting of one or more layers of flexible materials such as paper, foil, etc .;
these receptacles must be capable of being manufactured and sealed in an efficient and rapid manner in large quantities, at low expense, by machines operating at high speed, in such a way that no substantial no entry or exit can be made therein. air or no humidity.
The container which the invention comprises meets all these requirements. This container, in which the opposite edges of a blank of sheet material are joined to form a tubular body of rectangular cross section and in which the ends of this tubular body are folded to form the closures thereof, is characterized by that portions of opposite side walls adjacent to at least one of the ends of the body are folded inwardly to form a two-part end wall,
disposed at right angles to the side walls and that the opposite halves of a peripheral portion adjacent to said folded portions are sealed directly to each other along their entire length in a single continuous seal of equal weight halfway around the perimeter of the container, thus forming a tab passing through the end wall and folded against the container.
The method which the invention comprises is characterized in that a blank of sheet material is folded and its opposite edges joined to form a body open at its ends, of rectangular cross section, which is then joined. folds portions of two opposite side walls of this body inwards to form an end wall in two parts, disposed at right angles to the side walls, which the two halves are pressed against each other opposites of a peripheral portion adjacent to said folded portions, that these halves are sealed directly to each other over their entire length in a single continuous seal of length equal to half of the perimeter of the container, thus forming a protruding tab which is then folded against the container.
The accompanying drawing represents, to. by way of example, an embodiment of the container which the invention comprises and illustrates an embodiment of the method which also comprises the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a blank with several thicknesses which can be used to establish an embodiment of the container according to the invention, a corner of one of the thicknesses of this blank being raised; Fig. 2 is an isometric perspective showing the body made using this blank by the first folding and sealing operation; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail, on a larger scale, through line 3-3 of FIG. 2, except that the joint is shown near the angle of the body;

Fig. 12 and 13 show a device for folding the end parts of the container after the sealing operation; Fig. 14 is an isometric perspective view showing a device for supporting the container. and its contents during the sealing and folding operations of the. second end; Fig. 15 is a section, on a larger scale, through line 15-15 of FIG. 7.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the manufacture of an embodiment of the container, consisting of a packaging or box suitable for the packaging of cigarettes, but it is understood that one could. to provide embodiments having dimensions and shapes other than those shown, other embodiments possibly being intended for the packaging of objects other than cigarettes or tobacco.
One embodiment of the container according to the invention can be used for any of a wide variety of products and is designed to prevent the products packaged therein from absorbing moisture from the product. atmosphere and give up moisture or other volatile elements either to the atmosphere or to the materials of which the container itself is made.
The container can be made of a single blank composed of one or more thicknesses of material, certain surfaces of which can be treated, for a purpose which will be demonstrated in what follows, by glues or lacquers, the latter can have properties of bonding the tent, made real by the action of a ground before or / and heat.
To establish an embodiment of the receptacle according to the invention, one can use a rectangular blank such as that of FIG. 1, this blank comprising one or more layers 15 of a fibrous material such as paper, coated with one or more layers 16 of a non-porous and non-hygroscopic material, such as tin film. or aluminum. The sheet of paper forms the backing for the metallic film and, because of its greater toughness or tensile strength, strengthens and protects the less tenacious film.
The lines along which the blank 15, 16 is folded to form a finished box are indicated by the dashed lines A to F inclusive. If desired, you can score or weaken the blank along these lines to facilitate folding.
The thicknesses 15 and 16 can be fixed to each other by any suitable adhesive, but preferably by an adhesive having elastic or flexible properties, as is the case for glues based on gutta-percha, of rubber or substances containing latex, activated by a solvent, or glues based on chlorinated diphenyl resins for example, activated by heat, which ensures that said layers will be kept in intimate contact when the blank is folded into of a box.
The glue can be applied to any or all of the contact surfaces of layers 15 and 16.
Preferably, the film 16 forms the interior surface of the box, since this film is impermeable and non-hygroscopic and therefore does not absorb moisture or other volatile elements from the contents of the box. and that it also does not constitute at the location of the joints a path for the passage of air and humidity between said contents and the atmosphere.
In order to join the overlapping portions of the blank 15, 16 when folding the blank into a box and sealing their ends in an impermeable manner, it is preferable that the outer or exposed surface of the metal film 16 is previously coated, along the upper and lower edges and one of the ends of this film, with thin dry layers 17 and 18, respectively, with a thermoplastic adhesive which is intended to be activated by a solvent or by heat but, in the case of the latter means,
only at temperatures much higher than those to which the vessel is ordinarily called upon to be subjected. This adhesive should not be hygroscopic and should be made up so as to easily adhere to the film and constitute a good binder, whether in a joint between metal and paper or in a joint between two. metal surfaces. One glue that has given good results is Dupont Acetate Lacquer No. X - 660 - 208, as well as TC - 3 Acetate Lacquer from Reynolds Metals Co.
This particular lacquer is a clear lacquer which becomes plastic or tacky at around 177 ° C or above, which is neutral in the dry state, which is soluble in alcohol and acetone and which can be applied easily. on the film as a thin dry layer by. a coating process using rollers.
Given the thickness of the materials employed in relation to the total dimensions of the box, the laminated structure of the walls of the box has been shown only in figs. 1, 3 and 5. A single-thickness wall has been shown. shown in all other figures for the sake of clarity.
To convert the blank 15, 16 into an impermeable box or packaging while wrapping a certain quantity of cigarettes or other products in this container, the blank is first wrapped around a hollow tube 19 forming a template (fig. 9), having the desired size and shape, the non-hygroscopic sheet 16 being placed near this tube.
The latter is preferably made of sheet metal, the thickness of which has been exaggerated in FIG. 9 for the sake of clarity, and is mounted on (or attached to) a suitable mandrel 21, which may itself be supported by a rotating turret (not shown) to allow the jig tube to move. be moved, by the rotation of the turret, from one station to another.
In the embodiment shown, the blank 15, 16 passes only once around the tube 19, its ends being arranged overlapping, at 20, so that the thermoplastic strip 18 comes into contact with the exposed surface of the tube. the sheet of paper 15 at the opposite end of the blank. However, it is clear that several blanks similar to blank 15, 16 could be used to form the body 22 (fig. 2) or that a single blank but longer by several turns could be wrapped around the tube. template if you wanted a body with several thicknesses.
It is preferable to fold the blank 15, 16 along the lines F so that the angles of the body 22 are located along these lines and the overlap 20 is located. approximately in the middle of one side of the body. However, this overlap could be located at any other desired point on the periphery of the body, for example near one of the corners of this body, as shown in FIG. 3. An elongated sealing iron 23 (Fig. 9), which can be heated and maintained at a desired temperature by any suitable means, such as an electric heater 24 combined with a thermostat, is then applied and pressed against the. seal 20.
The heat of the iron 23 and the pressure exerted on the seal by this iron have the effect of activating the lacquer layer 18 between the overlapping ends of the blank 15, 16, of pressing this layer into the interstices of the contact surfaces and , in this way, to sensitively weld the surfaces to each other.
The pressure exerted by the iron 23 is preferably sufficient to compress the paper element of the blank, as indicated by the dense puncture at 25 (Fig. 3), so as to form a bevelled joint and to force the blank. end of the metal film 16 located inside the body 22 to come into contact with an intermediate part of this film, for example at 26,
to thereby provide said body with a continuous interior surface made of the impermeable non-hygroscopic film. The compression of the sheet of paper 15 at the points 25 also significantly decreases its absorbency and, therefore, prevents moisture from entering or leaving the container through this part of the seal.
The body 22 is then brought to another station and advanced on the tube 19 so that a marginal part constituting the zone between the line A and the edge B ( fig. 4). of width substantially equal to half the width of the walls 22a, and a peripheral strip portion defined by lines A and C, also of width equal to half the width of the walls 22a of the body, pass the outer end of said tube.
With the body 22 in this position, two support tools 27, 27 (fig. 10) are moved until the sides 22a of said body come into contact, the plane of the outer surfaces of these tools coinciding with the fold line C and with the outer edge of the tube 19. Two heating and pressure piles 28, 28, which are provided with electric heating bars 29, converge at right angles to the direction of movement of the tools 27, as indicated by the arrows ( fig. 10), and come into contact with the projecting part CD of the sides 22b of the body 22.
Continuing the movement of the piles 28 from the positions shown in FIG. 10, these piles act to bend the AC strip portions of the side walls 22b inward and across the orifice of the tube 19 to thereby form a two-part end wall 30, 30 (Fig. 6). .
During this folding operation, the walls 22a are folded outwards along the fold lines C, and the marginal parts AB of these walls are folded along the lines D, while the strip parts AC of the walls 22a are folded along before lines E.
As a result, when the piles 28 reach the positions shown in FIG. 11, the AC strip portions of the walls 22a have been bent in the form of triangular multi-ply tabs 31, 31 (Fig. 6) which protrude outward at right angles to said sides, and the opposing halves of the inner peripheral surface of the entire marginal part AB of the body, which surface is coated with thermoplastic lacquer 17,
are pressed against each other to form a multi-ply flat tab 32 which extends across and down the middle of the end of the body 22 from the extreme tops of the triangular ears or tabs 31 protruding towards the end. 'outside.
The pressure exerted on the leg 32 by the piles. 28 and the heat thus supplied to this tab have the effect of activating the layers of thermoplastic adhesive 17 interposed between the surfaces of the film in contact with this tab, in this way welding these surfaces to each other on a sufficiently large distance in the longitudinal direction of the body 22 and, consequently, to seal in an impermeable manner one of the ends of this body.
Since the piles 28 do not exert any pressure on the central sidewalls or the contents of the body which could tend to crush or compress them during the formation of the sealed joint between the metal surfaces of the tab 32, a significant pressure can be. exerted to ensure the formation of a waterproof seal without harming in any way said body or its contents. Further, when high pressures are applied, the heat required to form a satisfactory seal of the above kind is less and the speed with which the container can be established is increased to a corresponding extent.
The seal thus formed between two metal surfaces, and which comprises the non-hygroscopic thermoplastic layer 17, constitutes a hermetic end closure which prevents moisture or air from escaping or entering the container. It has been found that it is not possible to achieve the same result with a joint between two surfaces of plain untreated paper, since the paper is hygroscopic and porous and forms between the contents of the container and the atmosphere a path allowing the passage of humidity and air, the paper .se behaving like a wick to conduct moisture.
To help ensure the impermeability of the seal between the mating surfaces of the tab 32 and to avoid any risk of leakage or relative movement of said surfaces when the tab is bent in the manner that will describe later, this tab can be embossed along one or more side lines 33, 33 (Fig. 5). This embossing can be carried out at the same time as the formation of the tab 32 by providing the working face of one of the piles 28 with suitable ribs and the face of the other pile with grooves occupying positions such that they cooperate. with the ribs.
To complete the formation of the end of the package or box, the tabs 31 and 32 are bent in an improved manner so as to. reinforce the end of the bundle and give it a neat and pleasing appearance. For this purpose, the body 22 is brought to another station, while it is supported on the tube 19, and the bands 34, 34, adjacent to the ends of the tab 32, are coated with an adhesive intended to be acti vée by heat or / and by a solvent.
The bands 34 may be formed on the blank during the printing operation of the labels or designs of the label or, if desired, during the conversion of the blank to packet. A folding iron 35 (FIG. 12), of width substantially equal to that of the walls 22b, is moved transversely at the end of the box in a plane parallel to the end wall 30, so as to fold the tab 32 along the line. folding line;
A, so that the central part of this leg comes into contact with said extreme pa king (fig. 15). After this operation, the tabs 31 and the projecting ends of the tab 32 are folded by 90 (fig. 7) and thus brought into the plane of the sides 22a by two folding irons 36, 36 (fig. 12) moving in a plane. parallel to these sides.
After the folding members 35 and 36 have been withdrawn, the legs 31 are folded inwards at a new angle of 90 (fig. 8) by two folding plates 37 (fig. 13) which converge and of which one of the ends. surfaces is parallel to the plane of the end wall 30. The strips of adhesive 34 are thus brought into contact and adhere to the central portion of the tab 32 to maintain the tabs 31 and 32 in the folded position. The central part of the tab 32 can also be glued to the end wall 30 if desired, but this is not essential.
One of the ends of the. The box being so constituted and sealed, this box is filled with cigarettes 38 or any of the various other types of products through the green or opposite end of the box. Preferably, the cigarettes or other products are introduced into the tube 19, which is rigid, and the partially closed box is then brought away from this tube by pressure exerted through the cigarettes, etc. against the closed end of the box.
The filled pack is transferred to an outer support mandrel 39 (Fig. 14) which can be established in two pieces serving to firmly grip the pack with the marginal part AB and the band portion AC of the open end of the body in. protrudes beyond the outer edge of the mandrel. These two parts are then folded and sealed in the same way and by the same means as those previously described for the opposite end of the package. It goes without saying that the box could be filled after it has been removed from tube 19 and either before or after it has been gripped by the jaws of mandrel 39.
If desired, a strip or gummed seal 40 (fig. 8) can be cast across the end of the finished packet.
The outer surface of the package. The above described can be provided with any print material desired and can be coated with a dry thin layer of high gloss lacquer to improve the appearance of that surface and make it suitable for repelling moisture. The printed material and the gloss lacquer layer, if this layer is used, are preferably applied to the exposed surface of the thickness 15 of the blank 15, 16 prior to forming the box.
It is understood that the lique metal film can be replaced by other impermeable layers. For example, the internal or non-hygroscopic thickness of the previously described container can be constituted by a thin sheet of the material called "vinylite" or by a thin dry layer of a suitable lacquer. However, in the present state of the industry, lacquers are not commercially satisfactory and therefore cannot be considered to be the equivalent of the metallic film.
The container obtained by means of the method described is established using one or more blanks comprising one or more layers of fibrous material coated with one or more impermeable layers (metal films, lacquers, etc.), the walls and seals of said container being so established as to prevent the passage of air or moisture through them, so that the contents of the package are kept fresh from the factory for a long period of time, regardless climatic conditions. The method described for folding the blank out. the shape of a box and sealing it allows the application of high pressures to ensure a hermetic seal without exerting crushing or destructive forces on the box or its contents.
The container obtained can be manufactured easily and quickly. for a low expense using machines working at high speeds, and the gaskets of this box are strong and durable, so that the waterproofness of the package is not destroyed by the care involved in the sale of the product.
In another embodiment of the process, a film of metal or other impervious material could be mounted on both sides of a thickness of fiber 15 to form a metal-to-metal seal at 20 or to provide the seal. same result by making the joint 20 in the same way as the joint 32 (fig. 15) and by folding it against the wall 22b, which avoids the presence of a raw edge of the paper thickness inside body 22. In this way, a container with attractive three points would be obtained, all sealed metal to metal.
If desired, the entire inner surface of the metal film can be coated with lacquer 16. The blank folding process can also be accomplished by forming a container which is not impermeable, or the blank can be folded according to this process to form an envelope for other packages.
Whenever the terms "container", "box", "package" or "packaging" are used in the specification, they are therefore to be interpreted as sufficiently broad to include an envelope intended to contain products which are enveloped by means other than said envelope.
To facilitate opening of the box without tearing the material of which it is made, the opposite halves of tab 32 may be left unsealed immediately near edge B, or alternatively, non-sealed tabs or extensions may be provided on them. suitable seals on which the user can exert traction to tear the sealed portions of the leg. It is further evident that the tabs 31 and the ends of the tab 32 can be bent to contact the side walls 22a from the position shown in FIG. 12, if desired.
Piles used in bending operations should be constructed so as to avoid sharp edge contact with the material, as shown in the drawing.
The pressure and heat used to form the seals are applied at right angles to the container body and without detrimental effects on the contents of the package. It will be noted that the method described is carried out in such a way that a large number of thicknesses in the joints are avoided, which ensures impermeability. Particular attention will be drawn to the fact that, at the corners of the actual body of the package, the metal film is subjected to compression rather than tension, which prevents breakage of this film during the stages of manufacture. cation and the resulting loss of impermeability.
The cigarette manufacturing industry has spent considerable sums on the purchase of the packaging machines. When an embodiment of the container according to the invention is used for cigarettes, these machines can be modified at a relatively low cost without reducing their capacity to produce the packages.
In addition, the use of the container described obviates the need to provide several sheets of material such as those commonly used at the present time to manufacture packaging of the type described for cigarettes, which decreases the cost and greatly facilitates the opening of the package. For example, a currently popular brand of cigars first uses a paper blank which is surrounded by a blank made of thick sheet of metal.
A paper label completely surrounds the metal foil and a layer of cellophane is then placed around this label. You have to tear each of the envelopes to be able to remove the cigarettes from the pack, and the four separate sheets do not constitute a waterproof seal. In the container described, a single multi-thickness blank which can be easily opened keeps the contents of the packet fresh from the invoice, which obviates the need to provide a waxed paper envelope around the cardboard, such as the one. the use of which is now so widespread to prevent the loss of volatile elements.
