Heater for liquids. The invention relates to a heating apparatus for liquids, in particular for water, of the type comprising a series of tubes connected to each other at their ends (so as to form a sinuous flow passage for the liquid to heating, electric immersion heating elements arranged in the tubes so as to leave an annular space free between the elements and the tubes for the flow of the liquid, a valve for controlling this flow and a control device for the heating elements.
The heating apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that a movable member of the device for controlling the heating elements, which switches these elements on and off, is connected to a cam, while a movable part of the liquid valve is connected to a member actuated by said cam, so as to synchronize the control of the flow of the liquid with that of the heating of the heating elements. The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the heating apparatus forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of said embodiment, constituted by a water heater; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1, looking in the direction of arrow II; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along the line III-III of FIG. 1, the water inlet passage, the evacuation conduits and the electrical connections being removed to better show the construction;
Fig. 4 and 5 show, respectively, a plan and a front elevation of a device for connecting a water valve with a rotary switch; Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show in detail the control device of the switch and the water valve; Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation taken along line VI-VI of FIG. 7; Fig. 7 is a section along the line VII-VII of FIG. 6; Fig. 8 is a section along the line VIII-VIII of FIG. 6.
The water heater shown in fig. 1, 2 and 3 comprises a base plate 10 on which are mounted a heating device 11, a water control valve 12, a switch 13 controlling the heating device and a socket 14 for connect the device to a source of electric current. The bottom plate 10 can be mounted on a wall and can be used to support a closing cover.
The heating device 11 comprises an upper connection box 15 comprising a water inlet 16 and a water outlet 1.7 as well as passages 18 and 19, and a lower connection box 20 fixed to a tube plate 21 by means of bolts 22 and comprising transverse passages 23, 24 and 25. The junction boxes can be formed by thin-walled pipes. Junction boxes 15 and 20 are linked together by riser tubes 26, 27, 28 and by downpipes 29, 30 and 31.
The inlet passage 16 is connected, by a conduit 32, to the outlet side of the water control valve 12 and the outlet passage 17 is connected to a discharge conduit 33. Electric submerged heating elements, in U-shaped 26a, 27a and 28a are threaded into the pipes 26-29, 27-30 and 28-31 and the ends of the branches of the heating elements are fixed in the upper part of the box 15 by means of tightly sealed nuts 34, the removable junction box 20 providing access to the heating elements to enable them to be replaced.
The heating elements are connected, through connection bars 35, to the socket 14 and to the switch 13 by conductors 36, the electrical connections and the switch being arranged so that it is possible to connect one, two or all three elements. The water control valve 12 is connected to a pipeline by means of a fitting 37, the volume and pressure of the water passing to the valve being originally regulated by a flow restrictor 38, screwed on. in the fitting to reduce the section of its bore 39.
After passing through the valve or control valve 12, the water flows, by means of the pipe 32, into the upper connection box 15 and, from there, in the form of a thin stream of cross section. tubular transverse in contact with the heating elements, descends through pipe 29 and ascends through pipe 26 then, by means of passage 18, descends in pipe 30 and rises in pipe 27 to finally descend, by means of passage 19 , in the pipe 31 and go up in the pipe 28 up to the outlet 17.
Therefore, it will be noted that the water flows, following a sinuous path, in the form of a relatively thin stream of water, of tubular cross section and, in the water heater, the thickness of the thread. which flows is preferably within limits varying between 2 mm and 5 mm. It is between these limits that the water is brought to a high temperature as it passes through the water heater.
The water regulating valve 12 comprises an inlet passage 40 and an outlet port 41, the water flowing from the port 40 to the port 41 through a controlled communication passage 40a. by a piston-valve 42 whose rod 43 is screwed into a caliper 44 in which a roller 45 is journalled.
A washer 41b, mounted on the piston-valve 42, bears against the seat 40b of the communication thread 40a, so as to completely block the latter when the valve is in its extreme upper position and, when the washer 41b leaves its position. seat, water flows through the communication passage by way of grooves 41c formed in the piston-valve, the grooves in question being inclined and being tapered so that the volume of water passing through the passage communication depends on the amount of which the piston-valve is lowered in antagonism to the action of a spring 43a,
housed between the caliper 44 and a gland 44a. The lower part 46 of the valve box constitutes a water hammer damper and serves to prevent the valve from floating, said box being secured to the bottom plate 10 by means of a bracket 47.
The construction of the water valve combined with the switch control device is more clearly shown in figs. 6, 7 and 8. The rotary electric switch is of a known type. This switch 13 is of the type in which angular movement of an axis 48 in one direction energizes a follower 49 comprising an ear 48a and which, when the axis 48 has described a predetermined angular movement completed. , follows said axis under the action of a res sort spiral housed in a barrel 50,
provided on the follower 49 which is connected to the movable contact blade 50a of the switch, so that a rapid movement of conjunction and disjunction is communicated to it. The abrupt operation of the follower 49 is used to effect the adjustment of the piston-valve 42 under conditions such that the volume of water passing through the water heater is in a predetermined ratio with the number. heating elements which are switched on; for this purpose, a chon sleeve 51 pivots freely on a sleeve pin 57 and comprises a claw 52 which embraces the lug 48a formed on the follower 49.
A cam 54 is fixed on the sleeve 51 and the angular movement that the follower 49 imparts to the sleeve 51 determines the angular movement of the cam 54 which cooperates with the roller 45 and thus ensures the vertical adjustment of the piston-valve 42 so as to to increase or to. decrease the flow. The man chon 51 is journaled in a stirrup 55 attached to the. threaded upper part 56a of the. valve 12 by fasteners 56, while the axis 48 for controlling the switch is extended by an axis 57 provided with an operating button 58.
The cam 54 is arranged so that it is impossible to close the switch without opening the valve valve and the caliper allows slight adjustments of the axis of the cam with respect to. the valve box.
