La fig. 1 est une vue en perspective d'une première forme d'exécution de l'outil; La fig. 2 est une vue de côté de celui-ci; La fig. 3 est une vue de côté d'une se conde forme d'exécution de l'outil; La fig. 4 est un plan de l'outil représenté à la fig. 3, avec l'organe coupant et son sup port supprimés et avec un moyen d'agrandis sement de la boucle en position de fonction nement; La fig. 5 est une- vue en coupe par 5-5 de la fig. 3;
Tool for making carpet. The present invention relates to a tool for the manufacture of carpets.
Until now, in the manufacture of cut pile rugs by hand, it has been the practice to cut the wool into short lengths before feeding it through the fabric, or to use a continuous length of wool to make a pile carpet in loops and then to cut the loops in a second separate operation, for example by means of a pair of scissors or by means of special tools established for this purpose.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tool for the manufacture of the udder which combines the loop forming and loop severing operations, which eliminates the second separate operation and also dispenses with the preliminary cutting operation.
For this purpose, the tool forming the object of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a member for attracting a length of thread through a woven bottom to form a loop, a guide member for the size. operation of the loop formed last and a cutting member for cutting this loop formed last while it is stretched over the guide member and while the first mentioned member has passed through the woven bottom for the purpose of formation of the next loop.
In a particular embodiment, in which the member to pass through the woven base is a hook and lo quet handle, the cutting member is a blade placed behind the latch, this blade being intended to , cutting, during the forward movement of the tool, the loop previously formed by the tool during the operation of manufacturing the belt. The blade is preferably removable and replaceable and can be secured in a holder attached to the handle of the tool.
This cutting blade cooperates advantageously with the guide member so as to provide between the cutting edge of the blade and the guide a notch in the form of 1 /, opening towards the latch, such that the wire loop formed by the tool is received in this notch and is cut there by the cutting blade when the wire loop approaches the base of the notch during the movement of the tool forwards: The execution mentioned therefore makes it possible to cut successive loops when the tool is moved forward in order to prepare it for the formation of the next loop.
The guide member can be interchangeable with guide members of other dimensions, to vary the size of the loop, or the tool can include removable accessories for enlarging the loop.
The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, two embodiments of the tool forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the tool; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a side view of a second embodiment of the tool; Fig. 4 is a plan of the tool shown in FIG. 3, with the cutting member and its support removed and with a means of enlarging the loop in the operating position; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through 5-5 of FIG. 3;
Fig. 6 is a schematic perspective view showing the tool in operation. In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, the tool comprises a metal handle a with a hook b and a latch c at one end, and a handle a 'at the opposite end.
The tool also includes a cutting blade d mounted behind the latch c in a holder e mounted integrally with the handle a 'of the tool. The blade d cooperates with a guide f fixed to the handle a1 of the tool, and is mounted in such a way that a notch in the form of a <B> V, </B> open towards the latch, is formed between the edge of blade d and guide f.
The guide f is substantially parallel to the handle a. of the tool and extends from the handle a1 towards the latch c, the guide being placed above the handle and at a distance from the latter sufficient to allow the threads or cords of the woven bottom of the carpet to pass between the handle and the guide.
The outer end of the guide f is slit longitudinally in g to allow the latch c to occupy its rear position and another longitudinal slit h is provided between the ends of the guide <I> f. </I> The guide <I> f </I> can be screwed or otherwise fixed in the handle a 'and can be replaced with larger or smaller guides (i.e. wider or narrower), depending on the length desired loop.
The cutting blade may consist of a safety razor blade and will usually be a double-edged blade, the support being arranged so as to engage with the usual holes in the blade and comprising a \ re and a blade. nut i to secure the blade in position. Other types of blades and other fastening means can be adopted.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the cutting member consists of a blade carried by a support which is fixed by means of screws to an enlarged part f Z of the guide f. The blade is, in this case, held in position on the support by means. two or more projections j of the support, engaging with corresponding holes in the blade <I> d. </I> A clamping plate <I> k, </I> hinged to the support by one end k1 and carrying a k2 clip attachment at the other end, serves to fix the blade to the support,
the clip clip k2 being intended to engage the edge of the holder, such that the blade is clamped between the holder and the clamping plate. The holder e occupies such a position on the tool that the cutting edge of the blade <I> d </I> forms an angle with the guide <I> f, </I> the tip of the blade protruding below the lower edge of the support in the slot lt, of the guide f, so that each loop of wire is cut when the tool is engaged through this loop.
So that the length of the loop and, therefore, the length of the pile, can be varied, the tool of Figs. 3 to 5 is provided with a pair of members l which pivot at l 'on the widened end f' of guide f, these members l being intended to be rotated in the position shown in FIG. 4, in which their ends engage in cavities h of the guide f, or in the position shown in FIG. 3, or even further back,
so that their ends engage in other very cavities this (fig. 3 and 4) of the handle al.
The loop widening members l shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 could be applied to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, instead of the substitution of guides f of different dimensions.
The embodiments shown work as follows: The loop <I> m. </I> of the wire is formed in the usual way by engaging the end of the handle <I> a </I> with the hook <I> b </I> and the latch c through the openwork woven background, under a pair of threads n (fig. 6); then thread the thread through the hook and latch and remove the handle a, which forms the loop m, the loop being tied on the finger and thumb of the person using the device, if desired, and being drawn tightly to prevent the wire from being pulled back through the bottom.
The handle a and the guide f are then engaged forward through the loop m and the handle is engaged forward through the bottom under the next pair of thread n, so that when the tool is pushed further through the bottom, the loop m slides along the guide f, while the threads n pass between the handle <I> a </I> and the guide f (fig. 6). The forward movement of the tool brings the cutting edge of the <I> d </I> wool into engagement with the <I> m </I> loop which is being cut, and then the yarn is again threaded through the hook and latch of the handle a and the tool is withdrawn to form another loop.
The width of the guide f adjusts the length of the pile, as the loop is enlarged as it passes along the guide from the thinned end to the wide end at which it is cut. The slot 1c facilitates the cutting by the blade of the loop of wire which is extended across this slot and the latter further serves to allow the waste from the cut to fall through the guide, thus preventing it. to accumulate between the guide and the edge of the blade.
The length of the bristle can be varied by the rotation of the members Z up to the position shown in FIG. 4, then the loop is further enlarged when it passes over the guide f and the members 1.
In other embodiments, the handle <I> a, </I> the guide <I> f </I> and the handle <I> a '</I> can be assembled by others medium, or they can be made in one piece or the guide f can be in one piece with the handle a or with the handle a '.
Further, the cutting blade d can be mounted in any suitable form of holder to match the shape of the sharp cutting blade, or instead of releasably mounting the blade in the holder, it could be secured. detachably to the tool and allow it to be adjusted in the longitudinal direction on the tool. The carpet fbnd shown in fig. 6 is made of double weft threads and double warp threads,
but the tool can be used just as easily with a carpet backing having single weft and warp yarns or having the backing woven in any other way.
Although the tools shown and described are of the latch and hook type, other embodiments could be provided which could be of the "gripper" type, comprising a pivoting jaw pressed by res out to grip the wool. , the cutting member and the guide member being in this case carried by the handle of the tool or by the voting member pi, or else one by the handle and the other by the pivoting member.
