Process for the preparation of a triarylmethane dye. Through Switzerland. Main patent No. 163012 is a process for the preparation of a triarylmethane dye, which is characterized in that 1 mol of p-chlorobenzaldehyde and 2 1M1 butylphenyltaurine are condensed to the tripbenylmethane compound, oxidized to the dye and the dye thus obtained with p- Phenetidine reacts by heating.
It has now been found that such or similar dyes are obtained if triarylmethane dyes or their preprocesses, such as leuco compounds and others which contain esters of the group> N-alkyl-oli one or more times in the molecule, with alkali metal sulfites at higher levels Treated temperatures. The esters are converted into the corresponding alkyl sulfonic acids.
This process is not restricted to bodies which are derived from the oxyethyl radical, rather alkylsulfonic acids which contain the sulfo group bonded to other radicals, such as propane, butane, etc., can also be removed with the same ease represent the corresponding esters.
You also have the option of obtaining dyes that contain oxyalkyl groups in addition to sulfoalkyl, if you start from compounds; whose oxyalkyl groups are only partially esterified, or when ester compounds are reacted with sulfite in insufficient amounts for complete conversion. The compounds thus obtained, which contain esters and sulfonic acids at the same time, can be saponified in the normal way to give the corresponding oxyalkyl-sulfoalkyl compounds.
If leuco compounds of the dyes are used as the starting point, the resulting alkylsulfonic acids are subsequently oxidized to dyes by the customary methods; The same also applies if dyes are reduced to leuco compounds through reaction with sulfite. If the alkylsulfonic acids are prepared from diarylmethanes and the like, triarylmethane dyes are built up from them in a manner known per se.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a dye of the triarylmethane series; it is characterized in that an alkali metal salt of the sulfuric acid ester of the leuco compound of the following constitution
EMI0002.0012
reacted in an aqueous medium with sodium sulfite in the heat and the leuco compound thus obtainable oxidized to the dye.
Example 72 parts by weight of the sodium salt of the # - sulfuric acid ester of the leuco compound of the following constitution
EMI0002.0021
are boiled for several hours on a reflux condenser with 200-300 parts by weight of water and 60 parts by weight of crystallized sodium sulfite. After diluting with water and adding saturated sodium chloride solution, the leuco compound is kept in pale blue crystals, which are converted into the dye in the usual way by oxidation.
When dry it is a bluish-reddish bronzing powder and colors the animal fibers in bright blue tones. .
It is identical to the product available under Swiss Patent No. 16 "0834.
