Description
Process for the preparation of a higher molecular weight sulfur compound. The main patent no. 165506 relates to a method for the preparation of a higher molecular weight sulfur compound, characterized in that the sulfuric acid ester of dodecyl alcohol is used. a salt of this ester is reacted with water-soluble sulfhydrates.
It has now been found that such a higher molecular weight sulfur compound can also be obtained by reacting the sulfuric acid ester of dodecyl alcohol or a salt thereof with mercaptoethane-α-sulfonic acid in an alkaline medium.
Example: 14.4 parts by weight of sodium dodecylsulfuric acid and 9.3 parts by weight of the disodium compound of ß-mercapto-ethane-α-sulfonic acid are mixed with 50 parts by volume of 70% alcohol to form a paste and left in the car for 4 hours for 160 heated.
After working up, the sodium salt of β-dodecylmereapto-ethane-α-sulfonic acid, which can be recrystallized from alcohol, is obtained in excellent yield. The product is a white crystalline mass and dissolves in water to form very alkali and acid-resistant solutions with excellent foaming, wetting, emulsifying and dispersing properties. The product can therefore be used with advantage as a soap substitute.
