Description
Process for the preparation of chlorine, thanesulfate zinc. In the main patent, the representation of sodium chloroethane sulfate is described by the action of ethylene chloride on a solution of sodium sulfite.
It has now been found that zinc chloroethanesulfate can be obtained in an analogous manner if ethylene chloride is reacted with a solution of zinc sulfite.
You can use the ethylene chloride in a dissolved or finely suspended state. To accelerate the reaction, you can work in the presence of catalytically active substances that accelerate the halogen exchange, such as copper, copper chloride or barium chloride. It has been found to be expedient to use the ethylene chloride in excess in order to avoid the formation of the ethane disulphonic acid salt. The implementation can be carried out with or without the application of positive pressure.
The zinc salt of chloroethane sulfonic acid obtained in this way is a white powder which is readily soluble in water and only sparingly soluble in alcohol and which is very hygroscopic. The product is a valuable intermediate for the dyestuff and textile industries, for example in compounds containing oxy or amido groups to introduce the ethanesulphonic acid group, which makes it easy to dissolve.
Example: 195 grams of crystallized zinc sulfite and 120 grams of ethylene chloride are boiled for 20 hours with 1,800 cm 'of water and 400 cm' of methanol with the addition of a little copper sulfate, then vacuumed unchanged zinc sulfite, distilled methanol and excess ethylene chloride and evaporated completely. The resulting crude product contains 351/0 chlorine ethanesulfonic zinc, which, as usual, can be cleaned.
