Speed indicator. The present invention relates to a speed indicator, in which the movement of the indicator member (needle, etc.) is caused by a relative movement of two control parts, one of these control parts being, according to the 'invention, wedged on the shaft arranged to receive the speed to be measured, while the other control part is arranged to be able to simultaneously see it rotate and be moved in the axial direction on said shaft, independently thereof, and be rotatably driven by the first, via a cam surface,
the relative axial displacement of the second control part relative to the first resulting from a retarding action exerted on it and varying constantly and instantaneously in the same direction as the speed to be measured. - This construction makes it possible to do away with a large number of cogs, exhaust devices, .. of vane, friction regulators, or all kinds of moderators which generally constitute delicate organs, of difficult construction and high cost price and complicating the assembly of the device.
It is precisely this large number of organs interposed between the shaft of the organ driven by the speed to be measured and the indicating organ itself which means that current devices lack sensitivity, that they do not indicate that after a more or less long time, the speed to be measured and that the indicator needle generally performs oscillations around the exact speed before staying there. By removing them, therefore, very great simplicity of the apparatus and instantaneous indication are obtained.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view thereof, part in section, and FIG. 2 a right angle view or of. under compared to the previous one; Fig. 3 is an elevational view, looking to the left of FIG. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical section along x-x of FIG. 1; Fig. 5 is a section along y-y of FIG. 4; Fig. 6 is a detail view, from the front, of a star with masses or centri fugitive tops;
Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the star with tnas, .es or spinning tops; Fig. 8 is a detail view, partly in section, of one of the centrifugal tops; Fig. 9 is a plan view of the dial; Fig. 10 is a sectional detail perpendicular to the axis of rotation of said star with centrifugal tops.
According to these figures, 1 is the receiving shaft of the apparatus, actuated either by direct coupling, or by the intermediary of any suitable members by a rotary member (shaft, for example) the speed of which is desired to be measured, said receiver shaft 1 being supported by bearings 2 integral with a base 3, of circular shape. On the shaft 1 is wedged a bush 4 with curvilinear cam ramp 5, the role of which will be explained below.
On the same shaft 1 is mounted a sleeve 6, the lower end of which engages inside the sleeve 4 and on which is fixed a roller 7 whose contact with the ramp 5 ensures the rotational drive of said sleeve. crazy 6 by the sleeve 4 as well as its axial displacement, as will be seen later, any sliding between the two contacting surfaces being avoided by the fact that the roller 7 is. knurled.
The sleeve 6 is, moreover, subjected to a retarding action, or braking varying constantly and instantaneously, in relation to the speed to be measured, and, for this purpose, the apparatus comprises a cen trifuge force device constituted as follows On l 'shaft 1 is wedged a support disc 8 whose lower surface has, hollowed out in its thickness, recesses 9 giving it the shape of a star and in which freely play the upper ends of centrifugal masses in the form of rollers or rotors, 10, being able to pivot via their lower extension 11 on a support disc 12 integral with a hub 12 It fixed to the shaft 1.
The upper part of the tops 10 is suitably hollowed out so as to receive a ball 13 (fig. 8) passing through the upper end of the top and coming into contact with the disc 8, in the corresponding recess thereof, the Experience having shown that spinners thus formed and assembled allow great sensitivity in the transmission of the effects of centrifugal force. The star 8 is arranged in a housing formed by the bearing 2, on the one hand, and fixed plates 14, on the other hand, parallel to each other, one of which is fixed against the base 3 and the other forms the top of the housing thus formed.
In these plates 14 are formed grooves 15 receiving the edges of sliding pieces 16 (fig. 10), which can move, moving away from the center outward under the centrifugal action of the tops 10, while acting on the brake levers 17.
The brake levers 17 are biased so that, assuming that the disc 8 is rotated slowly or that the latter is at rest, the rotors 10 are brought back to the bottom of their recess 9, towards the axis rotation, by the sliding parts 16 pushed by the levers 17 inwardly.
But if we impart a faster rotation to the shaft 1 and, consequently, to the web 8, the rotors 10 are subjected to the centrifugal force which tends to push them towards the periphery of the star by them. rotating around their extensions 11, at the same time they turn on themselves by the rotary effect acting "against their outer surface and this because of the friction against the outer parts which guide them, that is to say. that is to say the plates 14 and the sliding parts 16, the rotors 10 being able, however, to yield to the effect of the centrifugal force only when they come into contact with the sliding parts 16, on condition that this effect is sufficient. impor tant, to push these outwards.
As a result, the rotors first pass against the fixed guide parts, the plates 14, which are hollowed out for this purpose, see fig. 10, and then slide the ballot boxes after the others by a pushing action on the sliding parts 16, on which they then exert, having suddenly become free, an effort to push them outwards and, consequently, also the levers. 17 connected to the sliding parts 16, this effect being exerted with all the more force when the speed of rotation of the spinning star is more considerable.
The effect of the centrifugal force thus exerted by the rotors 10 on the smoothing parts 16 and the levers 17 is used to exert a braking resistance on the sleeve 6 in relation to the speed to be surer, and for this purpose braking pads 18, lined with cloth, are provided against the periphery thereof; for example, and pressed more or less strongly against said sleeve by the action of levers 17 on rods 19 sliding inside columns 20 and carrying said pads, the levers 17 pivoting like a pendulum on knives 21 , which can be adjusted in position, as will be seen later, and the adjustment of which, as well as that of any return spells that may be applied, is such that the pads 18 barely touch the periphery of the sleeve 6 when the device is at rest.
Above the sleeve 6 and resting on it is arranged a fork 22 (fig. 4 and 5), integral with a rack 23 sliding freely along a fixed axis 24, said rack 23 meshing with a pinion 25 wedged on an axis 26 supported by a bridge 20a connecting the two columns 20, this axis 26 crossing said bridge and receiving the speed indicator needle 27 of the apparatus.
It can easily be seen that the apparatus, the position of which is normally vertical or slightly inclined, being thus constituted, when the receiver shaft 1 is driven by a speed to be measured in the direction of the line a, the sleeve 4 is finds driven and in turn, by the action of the ramp cam 5 on the roller 7, the sleeve 6 mounted idle on said shaft. But the latter is slowed down in its rotational movement, with an intensity varying in the same direction as the speed to be measured, by the pads 18 applied by the rods 19 integral with the levers 17 subjected to the action of the sliding parts 16 repelled by the spinning tops with centrifugal effect 10.
It follows that, the sleeve 6 offering its drive by the sleeve 4 a resistance varying in the same direction as the speed to be measured, the ga let 7 rises along the ramp-cam 5 to a point corresponding to said speed, which causes the axial displacement of the sleeve 6, sliding along the shaft 1 upwards, and said sleeve, pushing back the fork 22, drives the rack 23 which rotates the pinion 28 and, consequently , the speed indicator hand 27.
When the speed decreases, the sleeve 6 immediately descends due to its own weight; however, to facilitate this descent, various auxiliary members are provided cry seen from the return of the sleeve 6.
Indeed, in the embodiment shown, there is provided, inside the sliding sleeve 6, and also mounted loose on the shaft 1, a second sleeve 28, split at 29 over its height, so to be able to slide along the shaft 1 which comprises a lug 30 engaging in the slot 29, while a helical spring 31 is fixed on the one hand to the base of the sleeve 28 and on the other hand to a part 6 a integral with the sleeve 6.
It can be seen that the spring 31 is armed during the ascent of the sleeve 6 and, by disarming when the speed decreases, recalls said sleeve from right to left by taking off the roller 7 from the ramp-cam, which facilitates its descent down. The spring 31 will act especially at low speeds, when the roller 7 is on a slightly inclined portion of the cam-ramp 5 and also when the rotation of the device is abruptly stopped, it will immediately bring back the indicator needle. 27 years off.
As regards the adjustment of the device, it is understood that this can be done in the first place by a judicious establishment of the profile of the ramp-cam 5, being given the forces to be balanced at each moment for obtain a determined position of the needle. However, it is advisable to provide an available adjustment mode in the finished construction of the apparatus, and, for this purpose, the knives 21 are movable in the manner of sliders and secured by means of clamping screws 32 engaging in fixed supports 33 integral with the base 3 of the device.
It is also suitable, to allow the use of the device in. any inclined or horizontal position, to provide a return spell 34 acting on the 1st rack 23 and, consequently, on the sleeve 6, this spring helping the descent of the sleeve 6 during a reduction in speed, said -man chon can moreover in certain cases be lightened, by recess for example.
As regards the sleeve 4, the latter comprises, in addition to the ramp-cam 5, a vertical portion 35, allowing the rotation of the shaft 1 in the opposite direction to. normal direction indicated by arrow a (fig. 1), the sleeve 6 then simply being driven in rotation, without displacement along the axis 1.
