Printing machine sheet feed mechanism. This invention relates to a printing machine sheet feed mechanism, of the kind in which so-called "suckers" are employed to successively remove the top sheets from a stack and successively feed them to the stack. impression.
One of the main difficulties experienced with feeding mechanisms of this kind is due to the tendency of the nozzles to remove several sheets from the stack instead of just one, which causes considerable trouble, particularly when we are working on very thin sheets.
In the feed mechanism according to the invention, a pivoting movement is imparted to the nozzle during its ascent, with the aim of slightly bending the lifting sheet - in order to facilitate its separation from the underlying sheets. In this mechanism, which includes a device for raising and lowering the squeegee, and a device for rotating it during its lifting movement, these devices can be moved transversely with respect to the feeding table to work on sheets of various widths. In addition, they are connected to each other in such a way that adjusting one of them transversely simultaneously adjusts the other in the same direction.
Further, this invention had previously been proposed, with the aim of minimizing the. aforementioned tendency to direct an air current either in an intermittent fashion or in a continuous fashion against the corners or edges of the stack of sheets, by means of relatively rigid tubes or nozzles . However, these air currents are usually by themselves insufficient to provide the desired action of the nozzles on one sheet at a time.
It has been found that it is particularly advantageous to combine the arrangement defined above for controlling the squeegee with a device for producing a continuous current of air directed towards the rear edge of the stack, in the vicinity of the nozzle. , and comprising a nozzle or tube which participates in the up-and-down movement of this nozzle.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example: Fil-. 1 is a sectional view of part of a printing press and shows in elevation an embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of this mechanism. In the. construction shown, the su ceur 1 pivots by means of pins 2 between the branches of a forked or loop-shaped part 3a fixed to the end of a horizontal bar 3 carried by a frame 4. This frame is capable of receiving alternately an elevation movement under the action of a rotary cam 5 acting on a roller 6 mounted at the upper end of the frame and a downward movement under the action of the. weight.
The cam 5 is mounted by a tongue-and-groove assembly on its shaft 7, arranged in the transverse direction of the feed board, so that it can be adjusted along this shaft to act on the leaves. of different widths, and the lower end of the frame 4 is forked and embraces a shaft 8 parallel to the shaft 7, its upper end being guided between a bracket or slide 13 which will be described below and the hub of the cam 5 .
The pivoting movement is communicated to the nozzle 1 by a bar 10 which can slide horizontally in guides 11, 12, fixed to the console 13, which is mounted: #: # on the shafts 7 and 8. One end of the . sliding bar 10 is connected in a votive way to an oscillating arm 14 attached to a second arm 15 and pivotally mounted on the console 13. The arm 15 carries a roller 16 held in contact with a cam 17 by a compression spring 18 which surrounds the bar 10 and acts between the fixed guide 12 and a collar 19 integral with the bar. The stroke (the bar 10 is adjustable using a locking screw 20 screwed into the guide 11 and against which the collar 19 rests.
The cam 17 is attached to the extended hub 21 of the cam 5 so that any adjustment of the console 13 along the shaft 7 simultaneously adjusts the cams 5, 17 and the frame 4 without disturbing the relationship of work between the last mentioned cam and the bar 10.
The pivoting of the nozzle 1 is effected by the action of a plate or head 22 of the bar 10 on a stud 23 projecting from the pivoting support 24 of the nozzle.
The nozzle 1 can be moved to the front and back of the stack when necessary, as well as vertically. To this end, the bar 3 can slide in the frame 4 and receive a back and forth movement of a rod 25 pivoting by one of its ends on the part 3a and by its opposite end on an arm 2 (i mounted on the shaft 8 by a tongue-and-groove joint. When movement of the nozzle forwards or backwards becomes necessary, the shaft 8 is made to oscillate by any convenient means.
The adjustment of the mechanism mentioned last along the shaft, and the simultaneous adjustment of the console 13 are ensured by a collar 27 fixed to the boss 28 of the console 13 and provided with projections or grif fes 29 coming into engagement. each side of the boss 30 of the arm 26.
The squeegee support 24 can be angularly adjusted around the axis of the pivots 2 using a locking screw 31 which is screwed on. through a boss 32 integral with the support and which is constantly pressed against a shoulder or stop 33 of the part 3a by a tension spring 34 secured by one of its ends to said part 3a and by its end opposite to the support 24 .
The nozzle which participates in the lifting movement and; of descent of the squeegee 1, as stated previously, is designated by 35 and is. carried in an adjustable manner by part 3a. To this end, this part is provided with a split extension 36 which is traversed vertically by the threaded rod 37 of a fork 38 which can be raised and lowered relative to the. part 3a and be fixed in any adjusted position by locking nuts 39 screwed onto said rod 37.
The nozzle 35 is pivotally mounted between the teeth of the fork 38, for example by means of studs 40, and can be adjusted angularly around the axis of said studs by a locking screw 41 which is screwed through an arm 42 integral with the fork 38 and against the lower end of which the nozzle is constantly held by a tension spring 43 secured to the arm 42 and to the nozzle.
44, 45 show parts of the flexible pipes which respectively connect the nozzle 1 to the suction device and the nozzle 35 to the fan and 46 shows, schematically the stack of sheets delivered by the nozzle.
Thanks to the device described above, even if the top sheet is not really separated from the next after having been gripped by the nozzle 1, that is to say if the second sheet rises with the top sheet, the current of air delivered by the nozzle 35 will continue to be projected over the edges of the uppermost sheets, so that its separating action will remain and the two sheets will be separated effectively before the nozzle has ceased to exert its effect. suction action.
This blowing arrangement thus applied in conjunction with a nozzle which receives a pivoting movement during its lifting is particularly advantageous because the sheet held by the nozzle is slightly bent during its lifting movement, which assists the action. for separating the air stream delivered by the nozzle 35.
