Electric heater for curling or waving the hair. When we wave or curl a hair, we see that; near the root, the hair is more resistant to treatment than near the end.
The present invention relates to an electric heating device for curling or waving the hair in which two shapers are provided for the lock of hair to be treated, one being heated directly by a heating body and can therefore be used for the part of the wick near the root, the other being heated only by conduction. The two shapers are joined by a conductor of cross section less than those of the metal parts forming their heating surfaces.
Two embodiments of an apparatus according to the invention are described with reference to the accompanying drawing by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 3 of an electric heating device constructed according to the invention; Fig. 2 is another vertical section, but along line 2-2 of FIG. 3 7 Fig. 3 is a plan corresponding to FIGS. 1 and 2 ; Fig. 4 is an elevation of the second embodiment.
The apparatus shown comprises an envelope a for that of the shapers mentioned above which makes it possible to carry out the treatment by direct application of heat to the part of the lock of hair adjacent to the roots. This shaper is mounted on a ring b forming a support and made of a substance that is a poor conductor of electricity such as ebonite, bakelite or a similar substance. When the device is in use, the narrower end a1 of the outer, tapered part a2 of the casing a in which the resistance wire c is mounted is below the ring b.
In the extension of a metallic interior coating d, placed in the casing, is a tube dl, independent of the coating d, extending beyond the ring b and exceeding it by a length used for covering part of the lock of hair to be treated. This tube 4; therefore forms the other shaper mentioned in the claim.
The casing a is preferably made of aluminum; it is closed at its top by a ring g fixed to the metallic interior lining d. The outer part al is secured to the ring, g by means of screws q.
Around said coating d is applied a layer i of mica on which is then wound the resistance wire c, the turns of which are separated from each other using a cement. An outer layer 11 of mica surrounds the turns of resistance wire c and is held in position with a k-ligature. A layer of sheet asbestos surrounds the heating body thus formed. The conductors l for the current supply pass through insulating tubes iii in 'each in turns of a metal tube ff 1. These latter ensure at the same time the connection of the ring g and the metal ring h. subject to the end of the metal tube dl concentrically to the latter.
The upper ends of the ni rnl tubes pass through holes in the insulating ring b. The g and h. are also connected by the metal tubes f 'which do not contain insulating tubes, so that part of the heat supplied to the metal parts of the casing a is transmitted by conductivity to the ring h and to the tube dl.
The insulating ring b is in two pieces; one is provided at its upper part with an annular cavity b1 into which can be inserted a cover b2 secured to the periphery of the cavity b1 by screws b3. The cover b2 extends upwards and outwards to form a handle b4 situated well above the casing a and at a certain distance from the tube dl, so as to be able to be held in the hand without risking burns to the cc casing or dl tube while using the device.
The cover b2 is pierced with holes to provide passage for the insulated conductors o which end in the annular cavity b1 where they are secured under the contact screws bl from which the conductors 1 leave. The casing a as well as the ring 6t are secured under the insulating ring b by screws p. The independent tube dl can be moved closer to the metal interior lining d at will.
The lock of hair to be treated is wound up on a support independent of the device and not shown. This support has a smaller diameter than that of the metal coating and of the independent tube, so that it can be introduced by the end a- with the wick it supports, inside the parts d and dl. The end a2 is then located near the hairline.
Therefore, when the appliance is operational, part of the heat supplied to the casing a is transmitted by conduction from the metal parts, namely the tubes f f'1 and f\ to the dl tube so that, while, heat being supplied directly by said envelope a to the part of the strand of hair near the root, the hair intro produced in the independent tube are found to be adequately treated when sufficient treatment of the part of the hair near their roots is sufficient. This results in a saving of heat and current.
The connection of the tube dl and the metallic inner coating d or other part of the casing a of the apparatus could be carried out otherwise than has been indicated above, in particular by means of a metal connecting tube or other substance which could be of weaker cross section.
In the construction shown cry fig. 4, the tubular inner liner d of the casing ca extends upwardly beyond the insulating support ring b so that heat is conducted directly through the tube to its upper extension d1. A circumferential series of holes d2 is made immediately above the insulating support ring b in order to separate the two conformers and to reduce the cross section and the amount of heat conducted to the extension dl of the tube.
This avoids excessive heating of the part of the lock of hair which is located in the second shaper or said tubti extension. ] area of. Furthermore, the construction shown in FIG. 4 may be the same as that shown in FIGS. 1 to 3. One could however remove the ring h and bring the support ring b closer to the upper part of the casing a.
The tubular part which extends upwards could, if necessary, be covered on its outer wall with a non-conductive substance, but this is most often superfluous, since the radiation losses are sufficient to prevent the temperature from reaching a temperature. degree too high.
