Device for performing the so-called permanent wave of hair. In the processes of indestructible or permanent waving, imparting to the hair a structural modification, in particular of their keratin, the essential thing is the degree of temperature and the duration of the heating which is used.
An excessive degree of heat can burn and destroy the hair, while heating at too low a temperature must, for the desired result to be achieved, be prolonged excessively, which may have the effect of evaporating too much of the hair. liquid under the influence of which the. keratin must change, and consequently dry out the hair which bursts, swells and loses its flexibility.
The present invention -a. for object a positive dis making it possible to imitate it to a strict minimum, the duration of the heating, @de reduce the, as much as possible the quantity of liquid intended to be brought to. boiling to effect the modification of the keratin and thus operate, in the shortest time, the transformation of straight hair into wavy hair.
The device, which is the subject of the present invention, comprises, on the one hand, sheaths or envelopes each composed of a thin sheet of metal. and a layer of fibrous material, these sheaths being intended to be. arranged on the various locks .de che want wound on the usual curlers, and, on the other hand, a heating device mounted on a handle and intended to be placed successively and for a determined time on each sheath.
An embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown schematically and. By way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows, in cross section and in elevation, a few sheaths arranged on the respective curlers each carrying a lock of hair, and FIG. 2 shows, partially in vertical section, an electric heater.
Each lock of hair 1 is wound on a curler 2 of the usual type, the lower end of which: is -disposed in a protector 'â in the shape of a cup, partially made of flexible material, for example rubber. These protectors are preferably of the type described in Swiss Patent No. 138444. On each wick impregnated, in the usual manner with a liquid serving to modify the keratin, for example an alkaline solution,
is threaded a (conical groove 4 composed of a thin metal sheet, forming the outer face of the sheath, and a: layer of fibrous material, forming the inner face of the sheath. This layer of fibrous material, for example in fabric, can be impregnated with a suitable chemical material, for example to protect the fabric against the action of the above-mentioned liquid or to accelerate the reaction between said liquid and the keratin of the hair.
The electric heater (fig. 2) comprises two tubular bodies 5 and 6, one of which (5), open at its ends, is fitted into the a-Liter (6). The tube 5, the inner diameter of which is preferably neither less than 13 mm nor greater than 16 mm, is longer than the body 6 and exceeds the two ends of the latter. The end 7 of the tube 5, intended to be introduced during the cha.uffa.ge of the wicks, in the protector 3 of each curler, is slightly flared in the shape of a cone, so as to adapt to the shape even the strand of hair - the diameter of which is larger than. proximity to the roots.
He is at. notice that the , length of end 7 of tube 5 is less than the height of. protectors 3, so that, during heating, said end 7 cannot come into contact with the bottom of a protector and the lock of hair which passes through it.
Between the two bodies 5 and 6 is placed the resistor or heating body 8. This coil wire resistor is wound around the tube 5 duly insulated. Preferably the turns of the resistor are tighter towards the end 7 of the tube 5 to achieve during heating a more considerable heat intensity towards the base of the. lock of hair, denser near the roots.
To the body 6 is fixed at right angles a hollow handle 9 in which pass the son 10 current conductors. This handle ends in a handle made of wood or other material which does not conduct heat and electric current. On this handle 11 is fixed a chronograph 12 allowing the reading by seconds of the heating time of each lock of hair. In the example drawn, the chronograph 12 is mounted upright on the handle 11. It could also be fixed horizontally on a ring disposed in a rotatable manner, on the handle II.
In this case, the chronograph crown is turned within immediate reach of the thumb of the. hand of the operator and the dial is offset by 180 with respect to the crown so that its numerals are oriented towards the eyes of the operator, who can thus perform: with one hand all the operation of: l 'apparatus. The chronograph could also be constructed or "be combined with a switch so as to close the circuit of the resistor 8 on each start of the chronograph and to open it on each stop.
For heating the locks of hair, the apparatus according to. fi-. 2 previously heated to a high temperature is applied. in the manner indicated in. dashed lines in fig. 1. successively to all the ducts 4. On each of these, the heating appliance remains for a determined time, even for example 30 or 40 seconds, checked by means of the chrono: - graph. The operator thus passes the heating device successively over all the ducts.
The rapid heating being effected, the sleeves remain in place until the respective curlers have cooled. Each is then removed in a single stroke, dragged by the removal of the corresponding protector.
In this way, on the one hand, a very rapid boiling of the modifying liquid with which the locks of hair are impregnated is obtained, and, on the other hand, after removing the heating device, it is avoided , the escape of the vapors developed, and immediate cooling (the corresponding lock of hair. In addition, the device described allows a more efficient aetion of heat at the base of the hair than current methods and devices.
The metal sheet of each sheath is, for example, aluminum or aluminum foil, while the layer of fibrous material can be, for example, asbestos or asbestos paper. Each sheath can be constructed by winding in the shape of a cone a sheet or a strip, formed of the two layers adhering to one another, for example by gluing, on itself in the form of a coil and by closing the cone. obtained at its tip by pinching or stapling. But it is also possible to wind said sheet or strip in the form of a cone or cylinder on itself and hold it in this shape by an outer ring.
The metal sheet could also include a layer of aluminum foil glued to paper, the latter adhering by gluing to. the layer of fibrous material. The metal foil of each sheath may be coated with a paper showing perceptible variations under the effect of the heat resulting from the heating; this allows the operator to check if he has applied the heater to. all sheaths or not. The metal foil could also, for example, be of a metal exhibiting a variable color under the effect of the heat of the heater.
For the same purpose, the metal foil of each sheath could have an index mark of the pitch of the heater on the sheath, or the metal foil could have any mark as the heat of the heater. make appear or disappear.
The device could. also include a heater, heated by a heat source other than electricity, for example by a gas or alcohol burner or by a suitable stove. In this case, the handle carries a solid body pierced with a channel corresponding to the dimensions of the sheaths.
