Man erhält so praktisch reines Isodibenzanthron.
Process for the preparation of isodibenzanthrone. It is known that isodibenzanthrone is obtained if Bzl-halobenzanthrone is treated with alkali hydroxide or alkali alcoholate.
It has now been shown that this process can be carried out at relatively low temperatures, possibly even at room temperature, if a mixture of alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal alcoholate is allowed to act on Bzl-halobenzanthrone in the presence of an indifferent diluent. The reaction temperature depends in the individual case on the type of alkali metal alcoholate and alkali metal hydroxide used.
The mentioned mixtures of alkali hydroxide and alkali alcoholate can be prepared in a simple manner from alkali hydroxide and limited amounts of an alcohol, for example even in the presence of the indifferent diluent and BZI halogen benzanthrone. Instead of an alcohol one can also use a mixture of alcohols. It is advantageous to exclude oxygen as much as possible during the reaction, for example by introducing an inert gas.
Instead of alcohols one can also use compounds for the manufacture of the alcoholates which, for example, benzaldehyde, can deliver alcoholates under the conditions of the reaction.
Example 1: In a mixture of 200 parts of benzene with 70 parts of potassium hydroxide and 10 parts of pure Bzl-chlorobenzanthrone, 30 parts of isopropyl alcohol are run in with thorough stirring and with exclusion of air at 10 to 15, the isopropyl alcohol in Potassium isopropoxide passes over, and stirs for some time at this temperature.
The reaction mass is treated with steam to drive off the benzene and alcohol, then boiled with plenty of water with the addition of hydrosulfite, whereupon the blue vat formed is filtered and the dye is separated out by passing in air.
Practically pure isodibenzanthrone is obtained in this way. Example 2: 10 parts of pure Bzl-chlorobenzanthrone and 70 parts of finely powdered potassium hydroxide are added to 200 parts of trichlorobenzene, whereupon 40 parts of benzaldehyde are dissolved with stirring and the exclusion of air in 50 parts trichlorobenzene,
drips in at 80 to 90. The benzaldehyde is converted into a mixture of potassium benzylate and potassium benzoate. The reaction mass immediately takes on a deep blue color; the formation of the dye is complete in a very short time. Working up is carried out in the manner mentioned in Example 1.
