Description
Production of hydrogen bromide. It has long been known that one from technical bromine iron using Na., C03 or K.CO, the alkali salts of hydrobromic acid can produce. This process is still used in the bromine industry today. It is not yet known, however, that bromine iron can also be converted directly into free Can win hydrobromic acid. It is advantageous if one passes over bromine iron at 35o ° preheated steam flow, the yield of HBr is low; it would be most favorable Trap z i percent HBr found. If one conducts copious amounts of water at the same time as the water vapor Amount of air over the bromine iron, one obtains hydrogen bromide with a high content of free bromine. But if only a small amount of air is added to the water vapor you get a stream of almost pure hydrogen bromide under complete Decomposition of the bromine used. One can have the required response time shorten by starting with the temperature a little over 35o °, up to about 38o °, on the other hand, however, also by treating the bromine iron, which tends to melt, with a absorbent substance (kieselguhr, sawdust and the like) mixed and the action exposed to water vapor, thus offering a larger surface. Very suitable The iron oxide obtained in the reaction is also used for this purpose.
Is the manufacturing method just described to be used at the points who, for reasons of convenience, use bromine iron instead of free bromine, so is to prefer a modification of the process at the point of generation of the bromine, which is based on the fact that the evolution of hydrogen bromide simultaneously with the Formation of the bromine iron is made. It has been shown that by simultaneous Passing bromine vapor, water vapor and small amounts of air over iron filings 35o to 38o ° also hydrogen bromide in very good yield and great purity is obtained.
