Process for the preparation of 293-aminonaphthoic acid. Until recently, 2,3-aminonaphthoic acid was prepared by heating the 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid under pressure with aqueous ammonia. This process gives poor yields in that considerable amounts of β-naphthol and β-naphthylamine occur as by-products (cf. B. 28. 3096).
More recently it has been recommended to carry out the amidation in a dry way, which indeed led to better yields (cf. Helv. V [1922], page 558). The practical implementation of this process, in which the formation of hard lumps occurs very easily, encounters great difficulties in terms of apparatus.
The surprising observation has now been made that it is possible to simplify the amidation of 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid substantially while improving the already good yields of the dry process when using the 2,3'-oxynaphthoic acid Heated in a closed vessel with aqueous ammonia in the presence of double ammonia compounds, such as chloric or calcium chloride ammonia.
Example 1: 250 parts of zinc chloride are dissolved in 300 parts of water and 500 parts of 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid are added in a stirred autoclave. The autoclave is closed and about. 120 to 140 parts of gaseous ammonia, initiated. It is heated to 220 'to <B> 230' </B> (oil bath temperature) for 24 hours, with a pressure of 12 to 20 Atm. adjusts. The reaction product is a yellow, rather thick paste that is first boiled with 400.0 parts of water and 1400 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid.
A solution occurs for the most part. It is filtered hot, the filtrate is mixed with 1200 to 1500 parts of common salt and allowed to cool, the hydrate of 2,3-aminonaphthoic acid separating out in almost colorless crystals. These are filtered, washed briefly with saturated sodium chloride solution, then dissolved in 7000 parts of an approximately 8% sodium carbonate solution and filtered to remove a little undissolved material. The free 2,3-aminonaphthoic acid can be precipitated from the soda-alkaline filtrate by weakly acidifying, or the solution can be processed further directly. The yield is over 80 / "of theory.
<I> Example 2: </I> 250 parts of zinc chloride are dissolved in 531 parts of 24.7 '' g of aqueous ammonia with cooling and stirring. 500 parts of 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid are added to this solution in an autoclave. The autoclave is closed and stirred for 36 hours at a bath temperature of 220 to 230 "and a pressure of 15 to 20 atm. heated. The reaction product is a thin yellow pulp, which, as in the previous example, is worked up.
