Преди да бъде съединена с опаковъчното фолио (2), нишката (1) се подлага на целенасочено деформиране, изразяващо се в едностранно или двустранно, цялостно или частично разтегляне. След разкъсване на фолиото (2), нишката (1) получава специфично вълнообразно огъване с определен брой вълни с определен радиус, вчиито стойности се съдържа кодираната информация.
