<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
relie les extrémités supérieures des parois latérales concentriques ; ces parois sont solidaires à leur base de deux parois horizontales espacées qui constituent le fond du récipient ; le couvercle, également constitué de deux parois espacées entre elles pour créer un espace fermé, est articulé sur le récipient au moyen d'une charnière, et est pourvu d'un levier de manoeuvre pour l'ouverture ;
La présente invention s'est donné pour but de pourvoir à des récipients isothermes qui répondent mieux aux nécessités de la pratique que les récipients isolants connus dans l'Art antérieur, notamment en ce qu'ils assurent une excellente isolation des produits qui y sont contenus, à la température ambiante, pendant un temps suffisant entre le lieu de vente et le lieu de consommation pour que leur texture ne soit pas altérée, notamment dans le cas de produits congelés ; en ce que leur prix de revient est faible ; en ce qu'ils se prêtent à un assemblage et à un conditionnement sur des chaînes d'assemblage et de conditionnement à cadence élevée, automatisées ; en ce qu'ils sont emboîtables et gerbables en sorte que leur stockage à vide et remplis est relativement peu encombrant ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
Selon une autre disposition avantageuse de l'invention, l'installation de conditionnement associée à l'installation d'assemblage par l'intermédiaire du tapis d'évacuation des réceptacles isothermes, est alimentée en réceptacles isothermes obtenus par assemblage de réceptacles extérieurs sur des réceptacles intérieurs vides et comprend, en combinaison :-au moins un dispositif de remplissage comprenant un réservoir du produit à conditionner, associé à au moins une buse de remplissage i - un premier dispositif de préhension d'opercules à partir d'une enceinte de stockage d'opercules et de mise en place de ceux-ci dans l'ouverture des réceptacles isothermes correspondants ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
à l'invention, un pot intérieur 1 est inclus dans un pot extérieur 4 en matériau approprié, notamment en carton, de préférence en carton composite tel que carton gris intérieur avec couché blanc extérieur imprimable ou tel que carton couché polyéthylène ou aluminium, ou carton composite ou non, paraffiné intérieurement ou porteur d'une couche de vernis intérieure de protection contre l'humidité ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
jouer le rôle de couvercle.
Dans le cas où le pot intérieur 1 constitue l'un des éléments d'un regroupement ou"pack", l'opercule extérieur 10 peut être fixé par collage ou soudage, soit sur chacun des pots individuels qui constituent le regroupement, soit sur l'ensemble des pots constituant le regroupement ; en pareil cas, de même que le regroupement de pots 1 comporte des lignes de moindre résistance 11 entre les collerettes 2 de deux pots adjacents 1 pour permettre la séparation des pots du regroupement au moment de la consommation, de même l'opercule extérieur 10 est également pourvu de lignes de moindre résistance 12 ménagées en superposition aux lignes de moindre résistance 11 du regroupement (désigné d'une façon générale par la référence 13 dans les dessins) ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
Un empilement de pots 1 venus de fabrication est dépilé automatiquement au cours de l'étape 1, au moyen de techniques connues telles qu'aspiration par exemple, pour permettre la distribution des pots individuellement dans l'installation d'assemblage et de conditionnement qui sera décrite plus loin ; les pots 1 individuels sont amenés au poste II de remplissage où ils sont remplis du produit à conditionner tel que crème glacée, glace, sorbet ou produit laitier (yaourt ou crème-dessert par exemple) ou encore boisson fraîche ou tout autre produit réfrigéré ou congelé, ou à congeler, que l'on désire maintenir, après conditionnement, à une température donnée optimale ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
- la variante selon laquelle les packs 13a destinés à être assemblés aux pots 4 sont amenés sur le tapis d'accumulation 25, à leur sortie d'une machine de fabrication, telle que machine de thermoformage ou de moulage par injection, c'est-à-dire non remplis et à l'état ouvert, le tapis 26 évacuant les pots isothermes assemblés, non pas vers une zone d'emballage, mais vers des zones successives de conditionnement et d'bperculage intérieur et extérieur, et éventuellement vers une zone de réfrigération ou de congélation, puis vers une zone d'emballage ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>
<Desc/Clms Page number 24>
EMI24.1
Lorsque les pots 4 ont été orientés correctement, le plateau tournant 29 est entraîné en rotation pour parvenir au troisième poste de travail qui comporte également des organes de préhension du fond des pots 4, tels que, de préférence, des ventouses (non représentées) animées d'un mouvement de rotation d'un tour (et en maintenant l'orientation acquise au deuxième poste) au cours duquel le bord supérieur des pots 4 défile devant une buse fixe de pulvérisation de colle (non représentée) qui y dépose un trait de colle ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 25>

The present invention relates to a new isothermal receptacle, that is to say ensuring high thermal insulation of the food products which it is intended to contain, to a method of assembling such a receptacle and of packaging the products food therein and to an assembly and packaging installation implementing this process.
Insulated containers are known in the prior art. In particular, French patent 2 409 926 describes a container generally made of cardboard comprising a double wall delimiting an insulating gap containing air or an appropriate material, such a double wall can also be provided on the bottom and / or the cover of the container. The bottom is crimped into the outer wall which is provided with a metal reinforcement at its base. The upper opening, also provided with a metal reinforcement, has a bead which holds the interior wall and serves as a seat for a cover. However, such a container has the drawback of not ensuring a sufficient seal and of being of a relatively high cost price.
British patent 1,397,877 describes insulating containers suitable for receiving metal cans containing drinks, while allowing consumption of said drinks directly from the cans. According to this patent, the beverage can is held in the insulating container by friction, without its walls being made integral with those of the insulating container, so that the insulating container is reusable by replacing the beverage box consumed by a new box full drink.
In addition, the insulating container according to this patent, which is made of thermally insulating plastic material, comprises either a solid wall or two concentric side walls which delimit between them an insulating space in which a vacuum has been created or which is filled with air and which is closed at its upper end by a partition which
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
connects the upper ends of the concentric side walls; these walls are integral at their base with two spaced horizontal walls which constitute the bottom of the container; the cover, also consisting of two walls spaced apart to create a closed space, is articulated on the container by means of a hinge, and is provided with an operating lever for the opening;
the container comprises, at its upper part, a recess in which comes to fit without play, in the closed position, a projection carried by the cover, the opening of the latter giving access to the recess and facilitating the direct consumption of the drink contained in the metal box housed in the insulating container. As can be seen, the insulating container is relatively complicated, and therefore costly, and requires repeated, boring and sometimes difficult handling on the part of the consumer for the introduction of an insulating box, its removal and its replacement.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide insulated containers which better meet the needs of the practice than the insulating containers known in the prior art, in particular in that they provide excellent insulation of the products contained therein. , at room temperature, for a sufficient time between the place of sale and the place of consumption so that their texture is not altered, in particular in the case of frozen products; in that their cost price is low; in that they lend themselves to assembly and packaging on automated high-speed assembly and packaging lines; in that they are nestable and stackable so that their empty and filled storage is relatively compact;
and in that they are made at least as regards their external walls and possibly their external closing means, in a material allowing the printing of various inscriptions,

<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
In the invention, an inner pot 1 is included in an outer pot 4 made of a suitable material, in particular cardboard, preferably composite cardboard such as inner gray cardboard with printable exterior white coating or such as polyethylene or aluminum coated cardboard, or cardboard composite or not, internally waxed or carrying a layer of interior varnish for protection against humidity;
the outer pot 4 can also be made of plastic, by thermoforming, injection molding, injection blow molding or any other suitable technique. In the case where the outer pot 4 is made of plastic, the walls and the bottom are obtained in a single operation by one of the known molding techniques, the main ones of which have been listed above; in the case where the outer pot 4 is made of cardboard, it is composed of a substantially tubular part obtained by any suitable means and in particular by spiraling or by winding, and a bottom 5 which is then preferably also made of cardboard, and which is fixed substantially at the base of the tubular part by gluing, at 6, then rolling of the base of the tubular part to form a bead 7, or by crimping or by any other similar suitable technique.

play the role of cover.
In the case where the inner pot 1 constitutes one of the elements of a grouping or "pack", the outer cover 10 can be fixed by gluing or welding, either on each of the individual pots which constitute the grouping, or on the 'set of pots constituting the grouping; in such a case, just as the grouping of pots 1 comprises lines of least resistance 11 between the flanges 2 of two adjacent pots 1 to allow the separation of the pots from the grouping at the time of consumption, so the outer cover 10 is also provided with lines of lesser resistance 12 formed superimposed on the lines of lesser resistance 11 of the grouping (generally designated by the reference 13 in the drawings);
these lines of least resistance are obtained by means well known to those skilled in the art, which it is therefore not necessary to describe in the present context.
The outer pot 4 is assembled to the inner pot 1, for example by providing its upper edge 14 with glue dots, as described below, which secure the upper edge 14 of the outer pot 4 to the underside of the collar 2 of the pot. inside 1. Instead of glue dots, an outside jar 4 can be used provided, in the vicinity of its upper edge, with a layer of adhesive which is made to adhere under high pressure, with or without heating, according to the choice of adhesive, on the underside of the collar 2 of the inner pot 1. It should be added that the lugs 3 with which the inner pot 1 is provided facilitate the centering of the outer pot 4 when it is put in place on the inner pot 1.
The insulated pot 15 is produced in such a way that there is a vacuum between the side walls of the interior and exterior pots, between the interior 8, and exterior 10 lids and between the bottom of the interior pot 1 and the bottom 5 of the outer pot 4; this air gap is, after assembly, for example of the order of 5 mm, thus creating an air envelope of substantially thickness
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
equal over the entire periphery of the inner pot 1.
The insulated jar 15 makes it possible to package a product such as ice cream, dairy product, cold drink or the like, with a perfect seal, while ensuring the isolation of the product contained in the inner jar 1 by keeping it at the temperature at which it has been conditioned, for a sufficient time to allow its transport from the point of sale to the consumer's home, either for immediate consumption or for storage in a freezer or refrigerator, without its temperature, and consequently , its condition, especially in the case of a frozen product, is altered during this period of time; moreover, the choice of the material of the outer pot 4 and of the outer cover makes it possible to print graphics and the like therein and thus to give the insulated pot according to the invention an attractive appearance.
In addition, the installation of an outer insulating pot 4 which does not participate in the refrigeration or freezing operations of the packaged product, as described below, has the consequence that the outer pot is not cold, which represents an element of comfort for the consumer at the time of purchase.
When a plurality of interior pots 1 are grouped together to form a "pack" 13, the insulated pot 15 is obtained either as shown in the drawings (cf. FIGS. 1, 2, 4, and 5), or by placing place and fixing of an outer pot 4 on each of the inner pots 1, or, as a variant, by placing a single tray encompassing all of the inner pots 1 constituting the grouping 13a and fixing the latter, by bonding or the like, to the outer segments of the flanges 2 of the inner pots 1.
The insulated pots according to the invention are assembled by implementing an assembly and packaging process which will now be described with reference to FIG. 3 which constitutes a given embodiment thereof.

by way of nonlimiting example and a few variants of which will be indicated.
A stack of pots 1 from manufacturing is unstacked automatically during step 1, using known techniques such as suction for example, to allow the distribution of the pots individually in the assembly and packaging installation which will be described below; the individual jars 1 are brought to the filling station II where they are filled with the product to be packaged such as ice cream, ice cream, sorbet or dairy product (yogurt or dessert cream for example) or else a cold drink or any other refrigerated or frozen product , or to freeze, that one wishes to maintain, after conditioning, at a given optimum temperature;
from station II the individual jars 1 filled are brought to a station III where the inner lids 8 coming from a storage enclosure 16 are supported by a device 17 for gripping and positioning, for example of the known suction cup type in the technology considered, which places each of the inner lids 8 in the opening of the pot 1 brought to station III. At the next station, namely station IV, the outer covers 10 coming from a storage enclosure 18 are supported by a gripping and positioning device 19, for example of the suction cup type, to be put in place on the flange 2 of the pot 1, after which, they are glued or welded to the latter at station V.
The pots 1 filled and closed with the inner 8 and outer 10 lids in a rotary or linear step-by-step machine of the cell type distributed in a plurality of rows-or parallel tracks, of the type of machines produced and marketed by the ALFA Companies -LAVAL, HOYER, CAZAS, GASTI, in particular, are evacuated from this machine at station VI from where they are sent, for example, on a conveyor 20, in a freezing tunnel VII where a temperature prevails of the order of- 45 C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
External pots 4 are manufactured at station VIII, by spiraling from a strip 21 of coated cardboard, for example, in order to obtain a substantially tubular structure 4a to which a bottom 5 is fixed by gluing and rolling the lower edges of the structure tubular 4a to form a bead 7. The external pots 4 thus formed are brought to station IX which also reaches the pots 1 on leaving the freezing tunnel (station VII) and where the pots 4 are assembled by bonding to the pots 1, for forming the insulated pot 15 according to the invention.
As a variant, the outer pots 4 can be assembled with the inner pots 1 before the filling and closing stages of the latter, for example in the case where the products to be packaged must be introduced into the receptacles according to the invention, at their storage temperature-especially with regard to dairy products or cold drinks and where there is therefore no freezing step, or in the case where the outer pots 4 are provided with an adhesive of the "hot melt" type (which adheres by application of high pressure and a high temperature) and must therefore be assembled to the outer pots 1 by bonding at temperatures likely to alter the freezing or refrigeration temperatures of the packaged products.
Although the assembly and packaging method according to the invention described by way of example in the foregoing refers to the assembly and packaging of individual pots, it will be readily understood that it also applies to the '' and packaging of groupings of interior pots - or packs - and in particular the assembly of the latter both with individual exterior pots and with trays encompassing all the interior pots constituting a pack, in particular by providing the device filling a plurality of nozzles
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
simultaneous simultaneous filling and providing the positions for placing the inner and outer lids with a plurality of gripping suction cups and for placing in simultaneous coordinated operation,
as well as a multiplication of simultaneous operations, well known to those skilled in the art, is planned at the other stations.
The new installation, according to the invention, for assembling the exterior pots 4 with the interior pots 1 will now be described with reference to FIGS. 4 to 6 which represent two non-limiting exemplary embodiments.
The installation shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 is an example of an installation for assembling individual external pots 4 on the internal pots 1 secured to a grouping 13a of pots, as used at station IX for assembling Figure 3.
The outer pots 4 coming from a manufacturing step such as the station VIII in FIG. 3, if they are made of coated cardboard, for example, or from a thermoforming or injection molding or injection- - blow molding machine, if they are made of plastic, are brought to a carpet 22 with two-track cells, for example of the type mentioned above; the pots 4 are released in sequence for a pitch suitable for allowing their correct distribution in correspondence of the centers X and Y of the pack 13a of six pots 1 to which they must be assembled; to do this, they are placed on two tracks with, between each pot 4, a step X and Y corresponding to the centers X and Y of the pack 13a of six pots 1.
This pitching can be achieved in various ways and in particular: - either by positive drive on a carpet 22 with two tracks, honeycomb or with integrated stops, the accumulated pots 4 being released in each cell when the carpet 22 advances ; - either by an endless screw turning step by step and driving the pots 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
The pots 4 thus guided according to a step X and Y, and the whole of the machine advancing in a sequence Z, six guns 23 for dispensing glue (hot or cold glue) are lowered, in zone K, to deposit glue dots by means of the nozzles 24 simultaneously on the upper edges of six pots 4 arranged in groups of 3 on each of the two tracks of the carpet 22; the glue can also be deposited in the form of lines by rotation of the pots 4 relative to a fixed nozzle; the up-down path of the glue dispensing guns 23 is carried out using any suitable mechanical or pneumatic means, and in particular using pneumatic cylinders (not shown).
Packs 13a of six jars 1 (or 2.4 or 8 jars or more) coming from the freezing tunnel (item VII of figure 3), filled and closed as described above with reference to figure 3, are taken loaded by an accumulation belt 25 by which they are brought into the assembly zone R proper, in which the pots 4 previously glued in the zone K are assembled on the pots 1 constituting a pack 13a, in the following manner : a pack 13a is gripped, by the outer segments of the flanges 2 of the pots 1, by a suitably centered clamp (not shown), which lowers the pack 13a into the pots 4 placed below on the mat 22, which are fixed under the flanges 2 of the pots 1 of said pack, by the glue points of their upper edges.
The groups of insulated pots 13 thus assembled are evacuated on a belt 26 to a packaging area (not shown). As a variant, instead of lowering the packs 13 into the pots 4, it is possible to provide a lifting platform or other means, which mount a group of six pots 4 to the pots 1 forming the pack 13a.
The installation which has just been described can have different variants, and in particular:
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
the variant according to which the packs 13a intended to be assembled to the pots 4 are brought to the accumulation belt 25, at their exit from a manufacturing machine, such as a thermoforming or injection molding machine, that is to say that is to say unfilled and in the open state, the mat 26 evacuating the assembled insulated pots, not to a packaging zone, but to successive zones of conditioning and inner and outer sealing, and possibly to a zone refrigeration or freezing, then to a packaging area;
- the variant according to which the outer pots 4 are provided with an adhesive from manufacturing, the glue distribution zone is eliminated, a device for bonding by applying pressure and possibly heat is then provided in the assembly zone R between the unfilled packs and in the open state as in the previous variant, and the outer pots 4; - The variant in which the outer pots 4 are replaced by a single tray of dimensions suitable for encompassing all the pots 1 of a pack; - the variant according to which the accumulation mat 25 is adapted to bring not individual packs, but individual inner pots.
It goes without saying that the term "pots" includes receptacles of all sizes, whether receptacles intended to receive individual portions or receptacles suitable for receiving a quantity of packaged product intended for family consumption or to communities.
The installation shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 comprises a conveyor belt 28 for supplying a plurality of external pots 4-possibly originating from a manufacturing stage such as the station VIII in FIG. 3 and possibly also from a unstacking of known type-towards a circular rotating plate designated by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
generally by reference 29; the outer pots 4 can be individual pots, or be grouped into several pots or "packs". The turntable 29 is driven by an intermittent rotation movement which stops the pots 4 to be treated at each work station for the desired duration, such an intermittent rotation movement being obtained by means of an indexing motor of the appropriate type such than the FERGUSON indexer for example.
The pots 4 are released from the carpet 28 in sequences to be put in place on the turntable 29. The latter comprises a plurality of working zones 30 each of which comprises a plurality of cells suitable for receiving a corresponding number of external pots 4 The work zones 30 are in number at least equal to the number of work stations provided in association with the turntable and which will be discussed below.
The first work station is placed at the outlet of the carpet 28 and comprises positioning means (not shown) of a plurality of pots 4 released from the carpet 28, in the cells 31 of the work area 30 of the turntable 29 stopped next to the exit of the mat 28.
As soon as said positioning has been achieved, the plate 29 is rotated to reach the second work station, which is the position for orienting the pots 4 in the correct desired position. It is, in fact, desirable that the inscriptions and / or graphics carried by the external pots be placed exactly at the desired location, hence the need to orient the pots correctly, for this purpose; this is the reason why an orientation station is provided in which gripping suction cups 38 are brought to grip the bottom of the pots; each of these suction cups 38 is driven by a rotation movement of appropriate speed, by a micro-motor 39.
The pots are also held by clamps 40 which are slightly loosened during the rotation of the suction cups.
<Desc / Clms Page number 24>
EMI24.1
- u It goes without saying that although there has not been described an orientation device in relation to the embodiment shown in Figures 4 and 5, the installation shown in Figures 4 and 5 may advantageously include such device, as well as the carousel shown in Figure 7.
The correct orientation is controlled by photocells 32.
When the pots 4 have been oriented correctly, the turntable 29 is rotated to reach the third work station which also comprises gripping members from the bottom of the pots 4, such as, preferably, animated suction cups (not shown) of a rotational movement of a turn (and maintaining the orientation acquired at the second station) during which the upper edge of the pots 4 passes in front of a fixed nozzle for spraying glue (not shown) which deposits a line of glue;
this operation finished, the turntable 29 is rotated to bring the pots contained in the cells of the working area 30 considered, to the fourth work station, where the interior pots 1, individual or also grouped in packs, are placed in the outer pots 4 bonded, by a turret 33, the upper edge 14 of the pots 4 then sticking to the underside of the flanges 2 of the pots 1. The inner pots 1 reach the turret 33, which is also rotated by the indexing motor which drives the turntable 29, by a belt 34, coming from a packaging installation, generally designated by the reference 35, where they have been filled and closed respectively by an inner cap 8 and by an outer cap 10 .
As can be seen in FIG. 7, to respect the rate of the installation in accordance with the invention, two belts 34 simultaneously feed the turret 33.
<Desc / Clms Page number 25>
Once the pots 1 have been assembled in the pots 4, the isothermal receptacles in accordance with the invention obtained are driven by the sequential rotation of the plate 29, at the next station where they are evacuated on the evacuation mat 36, by an evacuation device such as the piston 37.
As is apparent from the above, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of implementation, embodiment and application which have just been described more explicitly; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants which may come to the mind of the technician in the matter, without departing from the framework, or the scope, of the present invention.
