Abstract

Nitriding steels by injecting a sintered solid contg. nitrogen and Mn into bath of molten steel during casting into the ladle. The sintered solid contg. 15-25 (pref. 19-21)% N2, 5-20 (pref. 10-12)% Mn, 10-30 (pref. 18-20)% total C and 40-50% Ca (pref. 27-29% combined and 15.5-17.5% CaO) is crushed and ground to 0-2mm in size and suspended in a gas e.g. compressed air. The process is used esp. vanadium steels.
