Abstract

Austenitic steels with N contents higher than those which are max. soluble at atmospheric press., having improved proof strength and tensile strength, are produced by using the electroslag melting process under pressure in an inert atm. The electrodes have a uniform N and alloying content over their cross-section and length, and the melt will not loose or pick up nitrogen. Melting is effected by using an operating pressure P above the slag, which corresponds to the average N content of the electrode and is given by the ratio N2/N2o where N is the average N content of the electrodes and No is the max. soluble N content at atmos. press.
