Abstract

1310071 Casting processes NIPPON LIGHT METAL CO Ltd 16 Aug 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 38368/71 Heading B3F In a pressure die casting process, the air in the mould cavity is replaced with a mixture of oxygen and an inert gas before injection of the molten metal into the cavity. The inert gas may be carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon or helium and constitutes between 1 and 10% by volume of the gas mixture. An example describes the production of an aluminium casting using an injection velocity of 100 m. per sec. and a melt temperature of 700‹ C. The oxygen reacts with the injected metal to form metal oxide particles in the casting and thus reduces the production of blow holes.
