<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Improvements relating to cutting machines"
The present invention relates to cutting machines and it finds particular application in angular cutting machines for plastic foams and sponge rubber.
Until now, machines for cutting foam materials have included a continuous strip knife passing between several rollers, at least one of which is driven and passing through a slot or orifice in a worktable on which the block to be cut. is placed. The variation of the angle of the cut relative to the worktable has so far
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
was carried out either by fully tilting the cutting head to change the angle of the cutting edge relative to the worktable, or by moving upper and lower rollers over which the strip knife passes, one relative to the the other in opposite directions, in order to change the angle of the strip knife with respect to the worktable.
These prior art proposals offered the disadvantage that by changing the angle, capacity or exposed length of the cutting edge is changed and it is not possible to achieve cuts at small angles to the table. of work.
According to the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for performing plant cuts on blocks or piles of material, this apparatus comprising planar cutting means, means for moving said cutting means in a plane around an axis with respect to said core and transport means for carrying out a translational movement of said cutting means in said plane, the arrangement being such that the cutting angle with respect to said block can be modified without modifying the length of said means cutting capable of being presented to said material for cutting therein.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the cutting means comprises a pair of spaced wheels located adjacent each end of a support arm, a strip knife being disposed on said wheels so as to present an edge. cutting practiced plane between said wheels and space of said support arm. The support arm is pivoted at one end so as to rotate in a vertical plane about a substantially horizontal axis, to locate the plane cutting edge of the strip knife at angles of at least zero to 90 to one. almost horizontal worktable surface.

The machine shown in the drawings and described below can be used to cut foam materials such as polyurethane foam. The machine consists essentially of a base 10 with a column 11 arranged vertically which carries a carriage 12 intended to move in a plane practically vertical with respect to said column 11. elongated substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the support arm 14. Said slide 24 is biased by means of a spring 25 outwardly relative to said arm 14, so that the wheel 21 carried by said axis 23 is also recalled towards 1 outside relative to said arm 14.
A strip knife 15 made of flexible spring steel is disposed around said wheels 21 'on the support arm 14 for rotation therein and is kept under tension by the spring return of said outer wheel 21.
The support arm 14 is rotated relative to said carriage 12 by means of a worm and pinion drive 26. The worm 27 is disposed at the end of a shaft 28 mounted at rotation on said carriage 12 and relative thereto, the other end of said shaft 28 carrying a flywheel 29 intended to rotate. ner shaft 28.
The worm 27 engages the teeth of a pinion or sector 30 fixed to the support arm 14 in order to rotate therewith, the arrangement being such that a rotation of the shaft 28 causes a corresponding rotation. of the worm 27 so as to drive the sector 30 dahs in the desired direction, consequently rotating the support arm 14 with respect to the carriage
12 and by increasing and decreasing the angle of the strip knife 15 relative to the work table 16 associated with the machine.
The weight of the support arm 14 is pneumatically balanced. The support arm is provided in its upper surface and on the part of the projection 13 immediately in front of the column 11, with a journal 35 disposed vertically and carrying at its upper end a pivot pin 36.
The latter carries, so that it rotates with it, a sector member 37 disposed substantially vertically and rearwardly in relation to said support arm 14, the front part 38 of the peripheral edge 39 of said sector 37 being coupled. by means of a connecting rod 40 to said support arm 14, at a point located outside along said arm 14 with respect to its axis of rotation with respect to the carriage 12, the arrangement being such as an angular displacement of said arm of

support 14 Relative to said carriage 12 is transmitted to sector 37 as a corresponding arc movement.
The peripheral edge 39 of said sector carries a bicycle-like tight link chain 41, attached to the sector at 38 in the vicinity of the fkation point of the connecting rod 40 on the front peripheral edge and extending around the arcuate surface 39 dU / said sector 37, vertically and downwards along a tangent from the latter to damping means 45.
The damping means 45 comprise an elongated cylinder 46 disposed substantially vertically and provided with a plunger, a compressed air line 48 being connected to the upper part of said cylinder 46 to urge the plunger downwards with respect to it. this. The air line 48 includes a pressure valve 49 in a manner described below. The arrangement of the plunger and cylinder 46 is such that air pressure applied to the upper surface of the plunger urges the plunger downwardly within said cylinder 46 to exert a corresponding return through the plunger. intermediary of said chain 41 and sector 37. and from the latter to said support arm 14 via said connecting rod 40, in order to balance the weight of said support arm 14.
The '14 support arm carries a contoured cam plate
50 provided to engage the active plunger 51 of the variable air pressure control valve 49, the arrangement being such that movement of the support arm 14 results in actuation of the control valve. of air pressure 49 so as to increase or decrease the pressure applied to the upper surface of the plunger within said cylinder 46, so that when the arm is lowered so that the cutting edge approaches at a small angle with a worktable 16 associated with the apparatus, the pressure applied to said cylinder 46 is increased to a maximum, while when the arm 14 is caused to rotate towards the

work table 16 associated with the apparatus, the air pressure supplied to said cylinder 46 decreases until a. point where the air pressure is practically zero, when the support arm 14 and the cutting edge 15 associated with it are arranged practically vertically,
Using the apparatus according to the present invention,
it is possible to obtain cuts in blocks of spongy material or foam with angles varying from zero to vail
90 relative to a worktable associated with the apparatus and the angle and position of the strip knife 15 with respect to the worktable 16 can be varied within a very wide range by rotating the support arm 14 relative to the carriage 12 and to the vertical movement of the carriage 12 itself.
Thus, it is possible to present the strip knife 15 at any angle between zero and 900 1 of the worktable 16 without reducing the length of the cutting edge which may be presented for work. By providing a corresponding slot in said worktable transversely to its longitudinal axis, it is possible to lower the carriage until the lower end of said strip knife passes through said slot.
The apparatus finds particular use for shaping non-rectangular shapes for use in seats, such as for example airplane seats, with which it is possible to start from a rectangular block of material of suitable dimensions and cut at a reduced angle to the work surface in order to obtain the required shape from said block without the need for complex jig systems to achieve the desired cutting angle .
