A torion bar 18 is fixed by dom # xtrfaité'a to the support 10 of the seat and its intermediate part can be rotated using a group of bearings 20 mounted on the

The torsion bar 18 which * and olavetee in its middle on a leVI, 3x, of -, 'eir4lon 22 accu plied to the support 12 of the backrest a.it to push the upper back of the backrest in the direction that oorrebpond to the p08iti: the most in front of the backrest 16 4r report su .1i' 15.
When the occupant of the seat leans back by pressing down on the backrest 16, the inclination of the backrest relative to the seat 15 meets elastic resistance due to the twisting force of the bar 18 acting between the backrest support 12. at the seat support 10.
In the construction mode shown, the support 10 of the seat comprises a transverse element 26 in the shape of a gutter having the profile of a U, the wings 27 and 28 of which

in which passes the support 12 of the backrest and a rear stop 38 delimits the lower edge of this opening * The backrest support 12 pivots around the pa lier group 20 until it meets the front stop 36 or the rear stop 38.
A reinforcing arm 42 and a flange 44 for retaining the torsion bar are fixed to each end of the transverse part 26 The reinforcing arm 42 is a straight angle having an upper part 45 and a side branch 46 Comte it is shown in Figures 4 and 56 the ends of the transverse part 26 have the tabs 48 which are engaged in complementary openings made in the arms 42 and in the flanges 44 then hot-riveted Flanges 44 for holding the torsion bar are pierced with square openings 49 aligned with each other and with the group of bearings 20 to receive the square torsion bar 18 and prevent it from rotating.
Thus the ends of this bar 18 are kept fixed relative to the seat 15 of the chair.
The support 12 of the backrest comprises a body 52 having a U-shaped section comprising wings 53 and the same central 54. The body 52 is mounted between the side ears 30 / support 10 of the seat. The ears 30 and the opposite wings 53 have openings (not shown) of the same diameter, which are aligned on the same transverse axis. A pad 56 (Figure 6) of "Nylon" or a similar material, has a cylindrical bearing 58 which can be engaged in each of the openings of the wings until the flange 59 of this pad abuts against.

the wing.
The pads 56 are positioned 400 as shown in Figure 2, so that the flanges 59 are close to each other to ensure the spacing between the body 52 and the ears 30. The torsion bar 18 had engaged in the aligned bores 61 of the bearings 56 to maintain them in the respective desired positions and form the group of bearings 20. In this way, this group of bearings supports both the intermediate part of the torsion bar 18 which can rotate and the body 52 tiltable on the cross piece 26.
The torsion lever 22 is mounted between guides

o have a locking bolt, as it is well known in the technique by means of which the arm 17 was adjustable in the vertical senna for the height adjustment of the backrest 16
To obtain the resistance necessary for the fixing of the fixed ends of the torsion bar 18, it may be useful to increase the thickness of the fixing members so that they have a greater contact surface of each member with the torsion bar. . As he had shown, the bar retaining flange 44 is slightly thicker than the wing 46 of the arm 42.
The difference in thickness between these parts forms a shoulder 83 (Figures 1 and 5). The end of the cross piece 26 has a shoulder 85 which rests on the shoulder 83 when the armature arm 42 and the flange 44 are in place.
Thus the flange 44 is securely attached to the crosspiece 26, as determined by the spaced tabs 48 closely engaged in the flank, and by the abutment contact .. between the shoulders Likewise each armor arm had securely fixed by the spaced legs 48 and by flush contact along the contour 87 with the flange 44. It is thus seen that the seat support 10 may be formed by an economically constructed unitary structure and comprising the transverse net 26 'armature arm 42 and flanges 44 for retaining the torsion bar.
The assembly of the adjustment meoaniama can be done as follows. The seat support 10 comprising the transverse piece 26, the frame arms 42 and the flanges 44 for retaining the torsion bar, can be assembled as a separate element, as mentioned in the previous paragraph.
The back support 12, comprising the body 52 and the articulation member 68, is introduced through the opening 37 of the transverse piece 26 until the pads 56 of the respective wings are aligned.

In this position, the torsion bar 18 can be inserted into the square openings 49 of the flanges, the

EMI8.1
requires a small number of Mobile organs. and auasi only uses parts that can be produced economically In addition, the parts are brought together in a way that is ideally suited for mass production processes
EMI8.2
Thus the mechanism described is both simple and eooomic.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiment which has been described, in particular by substitution of equivalent technical means without

seat, and the torsion bar extends between its end through these support means and constitutes the pivot axis between the support structures.
b) - The backrest support structure hits the axis of the torsion bar and exceeds it transversely over a given distance, said support means constitute the sole support of the backrest support structure and extend axially along the torsion bar a distance which is only a small part of the protruding length of the backrest support,
to thereby form a relatively flexible cantilever support for the backrest allowing movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the torsion bar. c) The support means comprise annular pads maintained spaces:

e) Adjustment means are provided on the backrest support structure and move in a direction transverse to the torsion bar and the lever, acting against this lever at a joint spaced from the torsion bar; these means modifying the position of the lever with respect to the support of the backrest to vary the prestress of the torsion bar and thus adjust the elastic resistance between the support structures, f) The support structure of the seat comprises spaced side members and a teransversal piece mounted between these side elements;

g) Said lateral elements of the seat support each have the shape of a bar or a plate and comprise two elements of different thicknesses fixed to each other and to the transverse piece to form a substantially unitary structure} and the torsion bar, the ends of which have a non-circular cross-section, is engaged in complementary openings formed in the thicker side elements in order to be prevented from rotating with respect to these elements . h) - Spaced ears are cut out of,
