 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Self-tightening pliers with variable opening and quick adjustment".

It is well known to produce collets whose opening variation is obtained by the displacement of a flat axis in a slide provided with arcs of a circle.

These grippers often leave much to be desired as regards the longevity of this axis and of its slide, the latter working, in fact, in poor conditions. It is therefore to obviate these drawbacks that a clamp with variable opening and rapid adjustment has been produced allowing correct clamping on cylindrical objects while being very robust.

In order to properly fix the object of the invention, without however limiting it, in the appended drawing: FIG. 1 is an external front view of a clamp produced according to the invention, FIG. 2 is a view in longitudinal section, corresponding to FIG. 1. The line in interrupted fruits illustrates the pivoting of the mobile branch.

FIG. 3 is a view, in plan and in section, along line a-b of FIG. 2,
According to the invention, the clamp is formed of two branches

1 and 2, respectively carrying the jaws 11 and 21. The branch 1, of flat section passes through the branch 2 which is made for example, in folded tale of U-shaped section, to constitute a yoke in its part between its * handle * and its attached jaw; - the
The branch ?, thus slides longitudinally on the branch 2, to allow the jaws 11 and 21 to be brought together or moved away.

On its edge adjacent to the jaw 11, the branch 1 forms a rack 12 whose teeth are oriented .. towards said jaw 1 The branch 1 bears immediately below its jaw 2, and between the flanges of its U-section , a pawl \ articulated on the axis 1 and whose beak urged to push by the spring-rod 5, engages in a notch of the rack 12. The pawl 3 forms a finger II on the outside to allow its release. toanuel.

On the other hand, the branch 2 is crossed by a spacer axis µ intended to limit the lateral play of the branch 1 while allowing a suitable angular displacement of the two branches between them, as illustrated by the line in broken lines in FIG. 2. This play is moreover constantly taken up by the pushing action of the spring 5 acting on the pawl 2 and, consequently, on the branch \, the latter bearing on the opposite side on the spacer pin 6.

The operation of the clamp thus produced is as follows:
By raising the pawl 3 and acting on the branch 2 downwards, the maximum opening of the two jaws 1 1 and 21 is obtained. The object or part to be gripped being placed between said jaws, it suffices to do slide the

branch 2 on branch 1 so that the catch 2 comes and engages in the corresponding notch closest to the thickness of said object. This pawl 1 remains held in place for the pushing action of the spring. Consequently, the assembly functions like an ordinary pliers, the articulation axis of which is constituted by the axis 4 of the pawl 3.

Since this pin 4 is necessarily located near the jaw 2, a powerful self-tightening action is obtained on the cylindrical parts if the jaws are provided with suitably oriented teeth.

The advantages of this clamp are clear from the description.
