<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

caractérisé par le fait qu'on imprègne lea fibres à teindre avec une composition comportant au moins un dérivé de la formule suïvante ;

of these mixtures, resulted from a series of very complex chemical reactions and requires, on the one hand, the use of an oxidizing substance, almost exclusively hydrogen peroxide and, on the other hand; it is carried out in the presence of alkaline products, usually ammonia. Consequently, the pH of these dyeing compositions is between 9 and 10.
The aforementioned processes which, from the point of view of the colorants and the shades obtained, give complete satisfaction, nevertheless have certain drawbacks. In particular, the use of paradiamineH can sometimes lead to mild dermatitis and can produce allergies in some particularly sensitive persons. Furthermore, in these processes, the solution of the dyes is usually mixed a few moments before use with a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution and the mixture is applied to the hair.
This addition constitutes a complication and is a cause of degradation of the keratin of the hair. The same is the case with the alkali which is present in these dyeing compositions, which can cause? hydrolysis and deterioration of hair texture.
In the main patent, a process for dyeing live hair and other keratinous fibers has been described, which process consists of using an aqueous composition containing a compound such as aminoresorcin, amino hydroquinone and aminopyroatechin. has made it possible to avoid or greatly reduce the drawbacks mentioned above.
Indeed, with these three compounds, the manifests
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
allergic talions were, of a bet ,. strongly attenuated and, on the other hand, the use of hydrogen peroxide and alkali had become superfluous. Beautiful shades could be obtained by applying aqueous solutions of these products at pH 7, with no additional oxidants, by simple exposure to ambient air.
However, in commercial use of these three products, it has been found that the aqueous solutions of aminoresorcin and aminopyecatechin. unlike those of aminohydroquimone, were not sufficiently stable, even at pH 7, and that after a few months their coloring power decreased until it disappeared.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that the aqueous solutions of certain amino-hydroquinone derivatives not only remain stable as a function of time and do not lose their tinctorial properties, but that they also make it possible to produce a set of particularly interesting nuances.
However, as we know, it is essential in the art of hair to have a set of compounds forming part of a homogeneous group and allowing the production of various shades.
The new derivatives used in accordance with the present invention which belong to the same chemical family, have, moreover, the advantage of making it possible to obtain a new dye for hair and similar fibers which does not require the addition of an oxidizer or alkalinity and which, moreover, does not cause any allergic manifestation.
The process of the invention is essentially

characterized in that the fibers to be dyed are impregnated with a composition comprising at least one derivative of the following formula;
EMI6.1
in which R and R. denote hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical having up to 4 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by an amine group or an OH group, one of these radicals R and R1 being different from 1 'hydrogen.
A subject of the invention is also, as a new industrial product, a composition for dyeing hair and similar fibers, characterized in that it contains a compound of general formula (I) above.
In a particularly suitable embodiment of the dyeing process of the invention, the hair or similar fibers are impregnated with an aqueous solution containing at least one derivative of the general formula (I) above, on contact. air, the pH of this solution being between 3 and 9. The results are particularly satisfactory when the pH of the solution is around 7.
As already indicated above, the process of the invention which is particularly valuable for dyeing the hair can also be applied to furs and other keratin substances.
