n POLYMERISATION D'ETHYLENE DANS DES
EMULSIONS NONIONIQUES "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

n POLYMERIZATION OF ETHYLENE IN
NONIONIC EMULSIONS "
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to emulsions of polymeric materials. It relates more particularly to novel stable aqueous nonionic emulsions of polyethylene, as well as to a process for obtaining such emulsions and to novel polyethylene-based products.
Polyethylene has many important uses because of its desirable physical and chemical properties. Among these uses, mention may be made of the use of polyethylene as a surfacing coating. Polyethylene is applied to surfaces in a variety of ways including extrusion, sizing, and as emulsions. The polyethylene emulsions available heretofore have not been entirely satisfactory because of their poor stability, difficult manufacture and low solids content.
The present invention relates to novel aqueous polyethylene emulsions which are characterized by good stability and which constitute liquids of low viscosity, odorless and colorless and milky.
The novel polyethylene emulsions according to the present invention are obtained by polymerization of ethylene in an aqueous medium at temperatures and pressures suitable for the polymerization, in the presence of a polymerization initiator and in the presence of a nonionic emulsifier of the type alkylphenoxy polyoxyethylene ethanol of the formula:

The amount of emulsifier in the reaction mixture is not very critical, but it depends somewhat on the degree of polymerization desired, i.e. the amount of polyethylene formed.
Thus, a greater amount of emulsifier must be employed, when the polymerization is carried out, so as to produce an emulsion having 20 to 25% solids, than when the solids content is, for example, of
15 to 20%. However, regardless of the degree of polymerization, an amount of emulsifier is preferably employed which constitutes about 5 to 20% and preferably 10 to 15% by weight of the solids content of the emulsion or of the latex obtained. In general, an amount of between about 1 and 5% by weight of emulsifier, based on the weight of the liquid medium, can be used for the polymerization.
Although the polymerization can be carried out easily in the presence of water, as the only liquid medium, it is desirable to add thereto an alcohol, such as tert-butanol. These alcoholic aqueous media can contain any amount of an alcohol of a type favorably influencing the polymerization and the resulting emulsion. Thus, an amount of up to about 35% by weight, based on the combined weight of alcohol and water, of an alcohol such as t-butanol can be included, of acceptably, in the polymerization medium, the most suitable percentages being about 7 to 25% by weight.
The polymerization is advantageously carried out at temperatures between 60 and 15 ° C. and, preferably, between 70 and 120 C. At present, the preferred initiation temperature is below about 100 ° C. and, preferably at about 80 ° C., the polymerization then being ¯ completed at a higher temperature, for example at a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
temperature of about 100 to 120 C or more. Pressures of between about 100 and 1400 kilograms per cm2 and more can be applied; however, pressures of about 175 to 315 kilograms per cm 2 are particularly suitable for the production of emulsions.
It should be noted, however, that the particular temperature-pressure ratios to be used are those which give the stable aqueous texture desired, conditions preventing this from being achieved having to be discarded.
The usual polymerization initiators from the class of alkali metal persulfates, such as potassium or sodium persulfate, can be used.
In general, a percentage between 0.03 and 0.50% by weight of initiator, based on the liquid reaction medium, is adequate for the polymerization.
The polymerization can be carried out batchwise. In this case, the liquid reaction medium is introduced into an autoclave, along with the nonionic emulsifier. The autoclave is preferably equipped with a stirrer. After purging the autoclave, for example by means of ethylene, the feed is heated to the polymerization temperature, after which the ethylene pressure is increased to the value to be used for the polymerization. While the mixture is agitated, a solution of the initiating agent in water is pumped into the autoclave. As the polymerization progresses, additional ethylene is continuously introduced to maintain the pressure.
The polymerization is allowed to proceed, until the emulsion acquires the desired content of solids. This stage can be determined by periodically taking samples from the autoclave during the polymerization. Polymerization is generally sufficiently thorough, after about 2 to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
5 hours, to obtain an emulsion having the desired solids content.
The emulsion produced directly upon polymerization should generally have a minimum of about 14% solids by weight, for practical reasons, but ordinarily the amount of solids should not exceed 25% by weight, since that higher concentrations lead to the production of unemulsified polyethylene emulsions or emulsions of reduced stability. A latex with a solids content of about 17 to 22% is considered ideal. In all cases, the polymerization should advantageously be discontinued, when the total solids contain about 10 to 15% by weight of the nonionic emulsifier.
The particle size of the polymer is usually between 0.03 and 0.15 microns.
After polymerization, any solvent present, such as tert-butanol, can be removed from the latex and the latex can be concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure, until the solids content reaches 30-50%. without adverse effect on the stability of the emulsion.
The polyethylene resin can be isolated from the emulsion, by suitable coagulation techniques, for example using isopropanol containing a small amount of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The precipitated polymer can be filtered and washed with isopropanol and water. The polyethylene thus obtained generally exhibits a density of at least 0.928 and a softening point greater than 100 ° C.
It has been found that the new emulsions obtained by the process according to the present invention contain new modified polyethylene resins, in which the emulsifier is chemically linked to the chains.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
polyethylene. It is believed that the emulsifier acts, to a limited extent, as a chain transfer agent, in that the radicals of the emulsifier form end groups on the polyethylene chains. The presence of the polyethylene-emulsifier resin is stabilized, by concentrating an emulsion obtained according to the present invention to dryness and by repeatedly extracting the solids, for example with methanol,. ethanol and hexane.
Thus, an emulsion containing solids assaying 1600 Triton N-101 (relative to solids) loses 14.4% (relative to solids) of the emulsifier, by extraction using methanol, but after washing with ethanol and N-hexane, the polyethylene contains 0.74% Triton N-101. This result is obtained after a total extraction time of 370 hours.
Dissolution and reprecipitation of the polyethylene failed to remove the emulsifier. The amount of emulsifier combined with polyethylene is considerably greater than that present after extractions with ethanol and n-hexane, since these extraneous solvents have the low molecular weight polyethylene, as well as 'emulsifier.
In general, an amount of up to about 3 to 4% by weight of the total solids of the emulsion constitutes. Usually emulsifier linked to polyethylene chains, although the amount of emulsifier will obviously vary, depending on the extent of polymerization and the amount of emulsifier used. The emulsifier modified polyethylene resin usually constitutes about 20 to 25% by weight of total solids.
The new emulsions according to the present invention form adherent, tenacious and shiny films on the paper, these films having

good impermeability properties with respect to moisture and vapor. Thin films applied to smooth surfaces form hard, tough, shiny, tacky and resistant coatings. to soiling. The emulsions can be used for finishing textiles, as well as in polishes, printing inks and surface coatings, such as, for example, industrial paints and finishes *
The following examples illustrate the invention.
EXAMPLE 1 To a mixture of 36 kg of distilled water and 0.75 kg of t-butanol, 1.35 kg of "Triton" N-101 was added in a 60 liter mixing tank. The stirred mixture was pumped into a 70 liter capacity autoclave equipped with 12.5 cm propeller type agitators. The autoclave was purged with ethylene (stirrer off) and the charge was heated to 80 ° C, rotating the stirrer at 624 rpm.
Ethylene from a compressor was introduced, until the pressure reached 175 kg / cm2. At this time, a solution of an initiating agent containing 0.11 kg of potassium persulfate in 2.25 kg of distilled water was pumped into the autoclave. The ethylene pressure was set at 210 kg per / cm2 and maintained at this value by an automatic control system. During a period of 4.5 hours, small samples were taken periodically and the solids content reached, at the end of this period, 17.4% The product was discharged into a collecting vessel at atmospheric pressure .
The product was a white latex having a uniform consistency and containing no non-dispersed solid polymer. The pH of the latex was ..:?, 5. The particle size was about 0.05 to 0.1 micron, as could be seen by electron micrograph.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
A part of the product was freed from butanol and concentrated in a rotating flask with a capacity of 22 liters, at reduced pressure, in a heated bath. The final total solids content was 41.8%. No separation or only weak separation of solids occurred during these operations. The concentrated latex was stable to acids, bases, polyvalent metal cations while they withstood vigorous mechanical agitation.
A part of the latex not freed from butanol was coagulated by adding isopropanol up to 3 times its volume, this isopropanol containing 1.6% by volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The mixture was heated to cooled 60 ° C and filtered with suction. The filter cake was resuspended in a volume of distilled water corresponding to 84% of the isopropanol used in the first stage and refiltered.
The pressed filter cake was dried in a vacuum oven at 50 ° C. The polymer thus isolated was a white powder having the following properties: Inherent viscosity (0.1 g in 50 cc of tetralin at
135 C) 0.642 Melting index - 475 to 190 C Softening point (ring and ball) - 105 - 106¯C
The infra-red spectrum of a molded film exhibited absorption bands at 6.2, 6.6 and 9.0 microns, these bands corresponding to those present in Triton N-101. These bands were not removed by extraction with methanol boiling for 15 minutes or at room temperature for 69.5 hours, demonstrating that Triton N-101 combined with the polymer at a rate of. 3% by weight of the product.
