<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a pressure application device of a belt polishing machine, in which a non-metallic or metallic endless ribbon guided on cylinders and having elastic coatings constitutes the application element for the polishing. The so-called workpiece polishing belt, which is guided by other cylinders.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Pressure beams are known, on belt polishing or sanding machines, beam ::.: In which the pressure exerted by the polishing belt on the surface to be polished can be changed using pneumatic air chambers ; devices have then been provided which allow the pneumatic chambers to be lifted from the side of the machine which is opposite the stop, so as not to damage the edge of the workpiece which is not applied against the stop.
Belt polishing machines are also known, which are controlled by means of compressed air by a system of rotating polishing pads, and in which these pads apply the polishing belt against the part to be polished.
Finally, belt polishing machines are known in which a pressure beam performs an oscillating movement over the entire width of the worktable, such that a uniform polishing pressure independent of the control is obtained.
These arrangements of the pressure beam have the disadvantage, residing in the fact that the heating of the polishing belt due to the very large contact extent between the pressure surface and the polishing belt, as well as the polishing belt wear, are very large.
In addition, when the application pressure is extended to the entire surface, the polishing dust does not have the possibility of escaping, so that a concentration of heating results and above all a poorly polished surface. pleasing to the eye.
To eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks, the present invention provides for equipping the pressure beam extending over the entire length of the part with an elastic foam rubber coating, -oolir.
Between this foam rubber coating and the

A polishing belt rotating externally at very high speed is a thin steel tape, to which are fixed pressure bands of elastic material.
These elastic bands are for example made of leather, and along these. bores of the tape they are arranged parallel to these edges, while in the center of the steel tape they are arranged obliquely with respect to the edges; they are attached to the steel tape by riveting, with the interposition of a layer of canvas.
This steel strip, which does not rotate during the operation of the machine, can, before or during the polishing operation, be moved longitudinally and be blocked in such a way that the end of the riveted pressure bands is at the height of the edge of the part that needs to be polished. A completely uniform and regular polishing is thus obtained which is clean up to the edge of the part to be polished without the latter being damaged, since the polishing belt is only applied, where the steel tape is equipped with elastic bands.
The aforementioned coating strips arranged obliquely with respect to the path of the polishing belt have the advantage that this belt is applied many times along its path. This exerts a particularly favorable action on the surface to be polished, since the polishing dust formed is rapidly removed from the belt, the wear of the belt being thus substantially reduced. Furthermore, the heating is very low, in particular during burnishing, so that here too there is less rolling and a better polishing action.
The drawing shows one embodiment of the object of the present invention.

Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing the pressure beam, the steel tape with the coating strips, the polishing belt, the workpiece and the worktable.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view, on a larger scale, of the steel tape with the coating strips.
The polishing and sanding machine with coolant present, in accordance with Figs. 2 and 3, two superimposed endless tapes 4 and 10. The outer tape 10 is the actual polishing belt, which is guided on the two cylinders 11 and
12, and whose polishing coating polishes the workpiece
13. The other endless tape 4, non-metallic or metallic, which is stationary during the rotation of the polishing belt 10, serves to apply the polishing belt 10 against the workpiece 13, under the action of the pressure beam 2, this application of the belt 10 on the part 13 taking place only over the length of the part 13 placed on the work table which is delimited by the stop 14.
For this purpose the tape 4 is guided on cylinders
5 and 6, and can be moved and blocked using these cylinders. Over about half of the length of this tape 4 there are coverings 7 formed by elastic bands' 711, which are fixed to the tape 4 with the interposition of a web 8 using rivets 9.
The tape 4 with the coatings 7 is under the action of the pressure beam itself 2. Between the pressure beam 2 and the tape 4 is a foam rubber layer 3. To match the application surface of the belt 10 with the length of the workpiece 13, the tape 4 with the coatings 7 is moved by rotation of one of the two cylinders 5 or 6, so that the end

to be polished, so that the surface of the workpiece which is to be polished will be polished completely, but without damaging its edges.
