Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to a closure device for vials and other containers as they are used for medical uses, for example as vials for parenteral injections, when it is necessary not only for the air to enter the container. vial is absolutely free of any bacteria but also that the needle of the hypodermic syringe, cannula or other instrument used to withdraw the contents of the vial is absolutely free of microbes or contamination, at least as regards the part which penetrates into the bottle. The invention is also applicable to bottles or other containers for wines, spirits and fruit juices, whereas it is desirable that only sterile air should enter the container when pouring or withdrawing from it. part of its content.

   The object of the invention is to provide a closure device of improved construction effectively fulfilling the above-mentioned conditions and which, according to a particular form of the invention, outweighs the rubber capsules currently in general use. for vaccine vials. With the rubber-cap vials generally used it is not possible to remove the entire contents by means of a hypodermic syringe because of the depression or vacuum which is created after having removed part of the contents, and it has been customary to establish an atmospheric equilibrium, so that the remainder of the contents can be subtracted by admitting non-sterile air into the vial. The construction described below makes it possible not to have recourse to this way of acting.

   According to the invention, a device for closing a vial or other container is provided with an air passage or air chamber allowing air to enter the vial or container and containing a filter insert or sterilization of air, this closure also having a stopper or member making it possible to remove the contents of the bottle or container, said stopper being independent or separate from said filtering or sterilizing insert.

   The closure may consist of a central stopper made of a microbicidal or fungicidal material capable of being punctured by the needle of a hypodermic syringe and surrounded by an annular compartment partially filled with an antiseptic material suitable for sterilization and filtering the air, said compartment having an air inlet opening and an air outlet opening controlled by a valve and opening into the interior of the flask or vessel to which the closure is applied. This valve can be operated by turning a cap or cover which can also control the air inlet opening, while the valve can be placed with a view to controlling a plate or part liable to hide or unmask. the upper face of the central plug.

   The latter and the air filter may be or include any antiseptic substance or solution. Alternatively, the antiseptic stopper can be replaced by a hollow stopper in which is housed a valve allowing the contents of the container to be discharged, while sterile air enters through the separate air filter. .

   Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings is a view in vertical section, on a large scale, of the upper part of a vial for parenteral injections provided with a closure device according to the invention and having a compartment containing a material suitable for sterilize air and a separate bactericidal and fungicidal plug through which the needle of a hypodermic syringe can pass.

   Fig. 13 is a horizontal sectional view, on a larger scale, along the line XIII-XIII of FIG. 10.

   Considering fig. 1 to 9 of the drawings, this improved closure is shown in its application to the neck of a vial for parenteral injections 1 and comprises a central stopper 2 having germicidal and fungicidal properties and an annular outer compartment 3 (see Fig. 1 and 6) partially filled with an antiseptic material 4 capable of filtering and sterilizing the air. This annular compartment 3, as can be seen, consists of a lower receptacle 5 in the form of an annular gutter in which closely fits a cover 6 in the form of an inverted annular gutter, the receptacle 5 and the cover 6 preferably being came from bottoms. weaving in sheet metal, for example aluminum.

   The lower gutter receptacle 5 has an outwardly directed flange 5a which sits tightly on the top of the neck of the vial, as manufactured. The cover in the form of an inverted gutter 6 has an opening 8 through which outside air can enter the compartment 3; on the other hand, in the bottom of the opposite gutter element 5 and on the other side of the neck of the bottle is another opening extended downwards by a short tube 9 belonging to a rotary valve 10. of suitable plastic or other material having an axial passage 11 opening at its top into secondary passages 12 and down into the interior of the bottle 1.

   The valve 10 is mounted for rotation in a fixed mount 13 of plastic or the like located in one of the halves of the annular air chamber 3 as seen in FIG. 6, this chamber being divided by vertical partitions 14 into two halves, one of which contains the material used to filter the air. These partitions 14 are perforated at 15 to give access to the chambers 16. The frame 13 of the valve has two openings 17 which,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 when placed in a certain position, mouth with the secondary passages 12 of the valve, so that the air which enters through the opening 8 into the annular compartment 3 can descend through the passages 17 and 12 and through the valve into the interior of the vial after entering the chambers 16 through the filter material 4.

   The rotary valve 10 terminates at its top with an upwardly projecting journal 18 the upper end of which is square in section and fits exactly into a square hole made in an actuator plate 19 which may be made. of plastic. This actuating plate 19 has the form shown in FIG. 5, its internal part being large enough so that, with the plate occupying a determined position, it covers the central space which contains the stopper 2. The relatively narrow external end of the plate 19 has, as produced, a stud. 20.

   On the whole of the closure fits a cap or cover 21 made for example of metal and having, manufactured with it, a pendant annular flange 22 tightly crimped in an annular groove 7 formed around the neck of the bottle 1, of so that if it is impossible to remove the cap 21 without tearing it, it can nevertheless be rotated freely around the neck of the bottle. This cap or rotating cap 21 has a mortise 23 (see FIG. 4) in which the lug 20 of the valve control plate 19 is engaged and it also has a large circular central opening 24 with a diameter equal to that of the central chamber which contains the stopper 2. In addition, the cap or cover 21 has an arcuate depression 25 at one end of which a hole 26 is drilled.

   When the cover 21 is rotated slightly it actuates the valve 10 through the part 19, and when the cover 21 is turned anti-clockwise as far as it can go the valve 10 is activated. born in its open position and at the same time the opening 26 is brought to coincide with the air intake opening 8. At the same time, the plate 19 actuating the valve is released from the central opening 24 of the cover, the rotating plate with the valve. This movement is necessary so that the liquid introduced can be brought in or out using the pierceable stopper using a hollow needle or a suitable cannula.

  Air can now enter through the opening 8, pass through the filter insert 4 and enter the interior of the bottle through passages 17 and 12.

  By rotating the cover 21 in the opposite direction to bring it to the middle position shown in fig. 4, the valve 10 is returned to the closed position, at the same time closing the air intake opening 8 and covering the cap 2 This position is also visible in fig. 1 of the drawings.

  The bottle is then hermetically closed. When the cover 21 is rotated as far as possible in a clockwise direction as indicated by the arrow in fig. 4 the air passages are closed but the perforable plug is uncovered. This allows a small amount of the liquid to be extracted by means of a hypodermic syringe, after having placed the vial upside down without leaking through the valve 10.

   The material for the sterilization and filtering of the air filling the annular chamber 3 can be made of any antimicrobial substance, or of a material treated with a substance or a li-. which is antimicrobial and forming or having multiple continuous and preferably tortuous passages through which air can pass into and escape the interior of the vial. This air filter may consist, for example, of a spongy elastomer based on anastomosing silicone, known under the registered name of “Silastomer”, this heat-resistant material.

  Alternatively, the filter material may be a cluster of coarse particles of a substance known commercially as "Kel-F" (C2F3C1) or, of course, agglutinated glass, foam rubber, or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 a fibrous mass of nylon or "Terylene", the material employed being treated if necessary with a suitable antiseptic.

   The central plug may be made of any material or substance exhibiting microbicidal and fungicidal properties and having on the outer surface of a hypodermic or other needle which passes through it with sufficient wiping or clamping effect to sweep away. its surface from germs or contaminating particles. It can consist, for example, of an antiseptic mass in the form of a jelly or of an anastomosing spongy body such as the spongy "silastomer" loaded with an antiseptic gel. The stopper shown is formed by a heat-resistant cellular or spongy body filled with an antiseptic gel and having upper 2a and lower 2b layers of a puncturable material (which may be "Silastomer") of higher density. .

   In addition, the plug is provided at its upper and lower ends with additional disks 27, 28 with a diameter greater than that of the part forming the central plug and forming flanges at the top and at the bottom of the latter as we see it in fig.

  1 and 8. The upper disc-shaped part 27 is formed by two layers of an elastic puncturable material such as, for example, that known under the trade name of "Kel-F" between which is interposed. - laid a layer of aluminum foil 27a. The lower disc 28 may consist of two layers of a similar material, the molecules or fibers of either layer being oriented and those of one being at right angles to those of the other. In any case, this lower disc 28 must be made of a chemically inert material, or coated below with an inert product having no chemical effect on the contents of the vial.

   As can be seen from fig. 1, the lower disc completely covers the underside of the closure, the latter resting on an annular rim 29 which encircles the interior of the neck of the bottle. The lower disc can be thickened below, as seen in the drawing, to ensure tight contact with the rim 29. The upper disc 27 has an opening which coincides with the air inlet opening 8. It is possible to treat the underside of cover 21 and part 19 so that they are mortal to viable contamination.

   The entire top of the vial and the closure device are covered with an outer screw cap 30 which can be prevented from being improperly removed by means of a cord 31 passed around the annular groove as described above. see in fig. 2, the ends of the cord then being out through holes 32 drilled in the cap and its ends being sealed by a lead 33 or some other sealing device.

   When the bottle is not in use, its contents are hermetically sealed by the closure of the valve 10 and the air inlet opening 8 and by the outer cap 30. When the contents are needed, they are removed. the outer cap 30 and the opening 8 and the valve 10 are discovered, the needle of the hypodermic syringe being inserted up and down through the central stopper 2. While a certain quantity of the contents of the vial is drawn off, air sterilized by the filter enters the latter, which prevents depression from occurring.

   Instead of the cover 21 being joined by crimping on the neck or the neck of the bottle as has been shown, it can be arranged so that it screws onto it.

   Not only does this improved closure make it possible to remove the contents of a vial or other container without the risk of being contaminated by contaminated air or carrying germs entering said vial or container, but it also has many other advantages. She allows to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 sterilize in autoclave vials or containers provided with this closure by means of moist steam, dry heat or by other means, the air filter preferably being able to withstand a high temperature up to for example 200 C Likewise, capped bottles containing heat stable fluids can be sterilized using wet steam.

   Empty sterile vials provided with this closure can be aseptically filled with sterile liquids, either directly from a sanitizing filter apparatus or from a sterile mass, by means of a hollow needle inserted into the stopper, the closure allowing seal the vials tightly and store the contents, if necessary, in the presence of sterile air or an inert gas that can be introduced into the vial instead of air. If desired, the vial can be filled with powder instead of liquid by expelling the powder by means of compressed air through a tube passing through the stopper.

   Instead of withdrawing the contents of the vial by means of a hypodermic syringe, it can be withdrawn all at once or by siphoning through a tube inserted through the stopper. This method can be used, for example, when the vial with the improved closure is to be used for blood transfusions.

   This sophisticated closure can be used in humid tropical climates as well as in temperate climates.

   The variant of the invention, which will now be described and which is shown in Figs. 10 to 13, relates to a flask or vessel particularly suitable for containing liquids such as for example milk and fruit juices and the stopper perforable central of the previous construction is replaced by a hollow part forming a stopper which contains a return valve allowing the contents of the flask or container to be discharged while air is admitted only after passing through a filter of air.

  Thus, considering FIGS. 10 to 13, the bottle or container 1a is provided with a closure comprising an annular compartment constituted by an annular lower part 34 having a U-shaped section and an upper part 35 having a central tubular part 36 from manufacture. and closed at its lower part. The annular compartment is divided by perforated partitions 37 (see fig. 11) into two halves, one of which contains an antiseptic air filtering liner 38 which may be made of any of the substances used for the construction of the. air filter 4.

  The other half of the annular gutter, in which air chambers 39 are formed, contains a valve plug 40 provided with an air inlet valve 41 allowing sterile air to be admitted into the vial or container. This air inlet valve 41, for example made of rubber, constitutes a flexible tube comprising an open upper end and a middle part which ends at the bottom in a flattened part in two layers 41a forming a voleto. These two layers or sides of the shutter portion 41a can open and close and, while the valve 41 allows air to descend into the interior of the vessel, air is prevented from passing through the valve in the direction opposite.

   The valve 41 is fixed in the casing 40 by threads or other means, and it has at the top air inlet openings 42 which coincide with air passage openings 43 provided in the valve. envelope of the valve, thus placing the air chambers 39 in communication with the interior of the valve 41. In the hanging tubular part 36 of the closure fits a hollow revolving plug 44 whose upper end has a flat horizontal actuating arm 45 provided with a lug 46 projecting vertically upwards by means of which the hollow plug can be rotated. In this hollow plug 44 is fixed a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 rubber valve 47 somewhat similar to valve 41 but reversed, provided at its top with a two-layer flap 47a and a tubular lower part.

   This screws into the rotating plug 44 and its side openings 48 coincide with similar openings 49 provided in the plug 44 (see Fig. 13) while the casing 36 of the pendant plug has openings 50 communicating with the. inside the bottle. In the position shown in fig. These openings are placed in a plane perpendicular to the coincident openings 48, 49, but these can be brought in front of the openings 50 by rotating the plug 44 through 90.

   The upper end of the hollow plug 44 is normally closed by a cover plate 51 (Fig. 12), one end of which is provided below with a boss 52 which fits into a circular cavity of the fixed cover 35, cavity. which forms a bearing, so that the plate 51 can rotate about the axis of the boss 52. The latter carries a toothed segment 53 (fig. 12) which cooperates with the teeth of the actuating arm 45 so that when The latter is rotated, the cover 51 also performs a converting movement and is either moved over the open upper end of the hollow plug 44 or moved away from it. In the top 35 of the annular channel, above the air filter 38, an air inlet opening 54 is formed which is masked or unmasked by the actuation of the control arm 45.

   This mechanism is covered as a whole by a cap 55 crimped in a groove 56 which encircles the neck of the container. This cap 55 has an annular channel 57 partially hollowed out so as to form an arcuate mortise 58 (figo 12) through which the lug 46 of the actuating arm passes, this mortise making it possible to move the arm 45 by means of the lug at an angle of 90 and thus bring the openings 48, 49 to coincide or not with the passages 50 and at the same time to unmask or close the upper end of the hollow plug 44 and the inlet opening - air flow 54. The cap 55 has a central opening 59 located immediately above the hollow plug.

   As seen in fig. 10, in the filter mass 38 can be cut a vertical passage 60 creating for the air an extended surface when the opening 54 is unmasked.

   When it is desired to take a certain quantity of the contents of the flask or other container, the arm 45 is brought into a position revealing the air inlet opening 54 and also, thanks to the plate 51, the upper end. lower part of the hollow stopper 44, the latter being at the same time rotated by the arm so as to bring the openings 48, 49 in front of the passages 50, The bottle or container is now tumbled and its contents can thus be poured out through the valve central 47, the tail portion thereof opening automatically. At the same time, the vacuum created in the container by the taking of the liquid forces air to enter the bottle through the filter 38 beyond the valve 41 which opens automatically.

   In this way, only sterile air can enter the container, and the sterile contents of said vial can be discharged without the remainder of the liquid being soiled by impurities brought in by the hands or by the air. When the bottle or container is replaced in its normal upright position, the valves 41 and 47 close immediately and no air can enter the container any longer. Likewise, the central stopper 44 and the air inlet 54 can then be covered by returning the arm 45 to its first position.

   To ensure proper airflow through the filter more than one air inlet opening can be provided and the air inlet valve can be loaded, which can be of any suitable construction. a non-toxic fungicide such as a hydroxyl ester of salicylic acid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

  One-way valves of any other suitable design can also be employed. Parts of the closure may be made of plastic, and the underside or other surfaces of the closure may be treated with a chemically inert substance.

   As with the construction first described, the container can be sterilized by filling or emptying it with liquid. Liquids can be stored with the complete exclusion of any antiseptic adjuvant, in an airtight manner and in any atmosphere. Liquids such as milk, natural fruit juices, etc., can be stored in such containers at low temperatures for extended periods of time without losing their natural flavor, taste or odor characteristics.
