<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

State of the art.
There are two categories of cylinder machines intended for shaping sheets of glass, so called because they essentially comprise a grinding wheel in the shape of a long cylinder and where the edge of the ice comes into contact with a generator of this cylinder: I - The machines bevelling machines intended for producing, for decorative purposes, a bevel along the edge and on the surface of the ice, machines in which the ice, held in a plane close to the plane tangent to the circle of the grinding wheel, is pressed against the latter . This pressure is exerted in a direction perpendicular or almost perpendicular to the plane of the ice.
2 - Lapping machines intended to shape the field of the ice in order to eliminate the irregularities of the cut and the cutting edges, and to give to these fields a very clean aspect.
The ice, the edge of which is to be lapped, rests near the grinding wheel on a fixed working support rod, is held by hand and pressed against the grinding wheel in a plane intersecting the circle of the cylinder. The pressure is exerted parallel or almost parallel to the plane of the ice.

THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO CYLINDERING MACHINES FOR BREAKING IN ICE CREAM.
Its purpose is to considerably increase the output by making it independent of the human factor and to eliminate the effort of the worker, an effort which is usually exerted in a painful position and exposed to splashing water.
It is characterized by the fact that the ice is neither maintained, nor set in motion, nor pressed by the worker, but carried by a device; this device comprises means for ensuring the pressure necessary for the work; that this device is articulated on an axis situated in the extension of the contact generator so as to be able to vary the plane of the ice in different secant positions of the circle of the grinding wheel; and that means are provided for obtaining this variation preferably with a uniform speed or a specially designed speed curve, with means for adjusting the amplitude and the location of this variation.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent schematically and by way of example only embodiments of the invention.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments presented and that many modifications. cations can be made in the embodiment without departing from the scope of this patent.
Figure I is a cross section of a mirror with a bevel.
Figure II is a cross section of an ice with a flat lapping, which is generally produced with two cut edges.
Figure III is a cross section of an ice with round lapping in an arc of a circle and a cross section of an ice with quarter round lapping.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure IV shows a plan view of the machine.
Figure V shows a side view of the machine.
Figure VI shows a detail view of the work support rod.
Figure VII shows a detail of a second embodiment of the control of the reciprocating circular motion.
A cylindrical grinding wheel 1 is driven by the usual rotational movement and the reciprocating axial translational movement by known devices, and which are not shown to simplify the drawings.
The ice to be shaped 2 rests at the front on the usual working support rod 3 and at the rear on the heel support 4 which is placed on two longitudinal members 5. The heel support can slide freely on these two longitudinal members to approach each other. or move away from the grinding wheel depending on the size of the glasses to be lapped and while maintaining a position strictly parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel.
The two chains 6 are attached to the heel support 4 at the place where they meet the extension of the plane of the ice, and they are wound on the two idler sprockets 7 and on the two sprockets 8 wedged on the axis 9 parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel and which can rotate in the bearings 10 attached to the side members 5. This allows the heel support to be pushed freely and effortlessly to be placed in the proper place depending on the size of the wheel. ice 2 while remaining parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel.
The counterweight 11 is suspended from the lever 12 rotating freely on the shaft 9 and carrying a ratchet 13. As soon as this ratchet 13 is engaged with the ratchet wheel 14 integral with the shaft 9, the counterweight urges the heel support 4 towards the grinding wheel and therefore exerts the necessary pressure on the ice.
This pressure is therefore obtained for all sizes of ice, without fixing any member and without any other preparation than placing the heel support 4 where it is to receive the ice and engaging the ratchet 13.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The two side members 5 are articulated at the front on the pivots 15 and at the rear on the two crutches 16 which are also articulated on the lever 17 which describes an alternating circular movement around the pivot 18 under the action of the cam 19.
For clarity of the drawing the mechanism controlling the continuous circular movement of the cam 19 is not shown.
This mechanism can be fitted with a brake allowing the precise and rapid stopping of the movement so that the ice support device is immobilized without loss of time in the chosen position, either to break in the ice in a determined plane, or to facilitate the ice. loading the ice onto the device supporting it.
A counterweight 20 is provided to reduce the force required from the cam 19.
The weight of the ice-carrier device is slightly greater than that of the counterweight 20, so that the roller 21 is always kept in contact with the cam 19, even when there is no ice on the device.
The arms 5 and the lever 17 are provided with several points of articulation with the crutches 16 in order to be able to adjust the amplitude of the reciprocating circular movement.
The crutch 16 is extendable thanks to the telescopic nut 22 in order to be able to locate the zone of movement.
The two articulation pivots 15 are placed in the extension of the generator of contact of the cylinder with the edge of the glass to be worked.
The articulation pivots 15 rotate in bearings not shown in the drawing for the purpose of simplification.
These bearings can slide on their supports in order to get closer to the center of the grinding wheel when the latter wears.
Another important feature of the invention is that the work support rod 3, instead of being fixed, is integral
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
spars 5 which forces it to follow the reciprocating circular movement of these arms and to maintain the same position relative to the ice during the movement of the latter.
Another particularity lies in the fact that the face of the working support rod 3, adjacent to the grinding wheel, forms, with the other face in contact with the ice, an acute or rounded angle in order to free itself from the grinding wheel. to allow fuller movement (see figure VI).
It is realized that: - When the two side members 5 are immobilized in a horizontal position, a flat redage will be obtained.
- When the two side members 5 are immobilized in an inclined position, a cut edge will be obtained.
- When the two side members 5 are driven by an oscillating movement around the pivots 15, a round or quarter round lapping will be obtained, with a circular arc profile depending on the amplitude and location of this movement.
One of the important features of the invention lies in the fact that it is used, for obtaining the reciprocating circular movement, either a connecting rod-crank device which causes an acceleration of the speed towards the center of the race, or as in the embodiment described above, a heart cam. This heart-shaped cam transmits, to the roller 21, an alternating circular movement of constant speed.
Another device for controlling this movement is shown by way of example in FIG. VII.
PigDn 23 is keyed on the slow shaft of a speed reducer coupled to an electric motor (not shown in the drawing.) The two limit switches 24 act on a reversing contactor (also not shown) to reverse. the direction of the motor. The bearing 26 of the pinion 23 is integral with the guide piece 27 in a rack 25.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
By acting on the rack 25 articulated to the side members 5, the pinion 23 transmits to them the desired constant speed reciprocating motion.
It goes without saying that without departing from the scope of this invention other means can be used to obtain this movement at constant speed, for example a hydraulic, pneumatic or magnetic jack, or any other known means.
In some cases, a cam designed for the purpose of slowing down the speed can be used in places where more material must be removed to obtain a determined or more regular profile of the ice field.
Also to urge the ice towards the grinding wheel, it will easily be understood that without departing from the scope of the invention, other devices causing the rectilinear movement than that described above can be used although the latter is particularly suited to its function, because of the guiding which is carried out by traction and not entirely by smooth friction or on rollers, friction which is as much as possible to be avoided in a place exposed to splashing water, abrasive materials and glass dust.
The ratchet coupling device, when disengaged, also allows the easy movement of the heel support, made independent of the counterweight in order to place this support in the suitable place to receive the ice, the pressure only being necessary. for the actual work.
It is obvious, for example, that the coupling device could just as easily act on a pinion keyed on the shaft 9 and meshed on a rack fixed to the heel support or act on any other device transforming a circular movement into a rectilinear movement. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It is also obvious that the ratchet engagement device could be replaced by another coupling mechanism, for example, by a device allowing, after the suitable placement of the heel support, to make the latter integral with the piston rod. a hydraulic, pneumatic or magnetic cylinder.
According to another example, the necessary pressure could also be obtained by using a cross member which can be fixed to the side members 5 at different distances from the grinding wheel depending on the size of the glasses to be shaped. This fixed cross member is provided with a biasing device carrying a heel similar to that of the cross member 4 to carry the rear of the ice and push it towards the grinding wheel. The biasing device may be a counterweight, a hydraulic, pneumatic or magnetic cylinder or any other known means.
