<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La présente invention a pour objet une machine automa- tique à lisser les pièces embouties et en particulier les ustensiles de cuisine. Cette machine qui augmente d'au moins 70% le rendement des machines à main existantes à ce jour et qui permet de réaliser automatiquement les opérations précitées sans la moindre fatigue pour la personne chargée de sa manoeuvre, est remarquable,notamment en ce qu'elle comporte en combinaison: un mandrin rotatif, sur lequel la pièce à lisser est maintenue pressée par une contre-pointe à plateau rotatif, susceptible d'être immobilisé longitudinalement dans la position de serrage, comme connu en soi;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Automatic machine for smoothing or polishing all stamped parts and in particular kitchen utensils
The other metal parts (of conical or frustoconical shape, with rectilinear or curvilinear generatrices of parabolic, semi-elliptical or other cylindrical shape) obtained by stamping generally comprise, after stamping, folds, directed very substantially along the generatrices. It is therefore essential to perform after stamping a smoothing operation intended to remove these folds. This operation is carried out, at the present time, using a hand lathe.
The stamped part to be smoothed is immobilized on a rotating mandrel using a plate tailstock, pushed against the mandrel. Then, by means of two cranks, the worker presses against the piece to be smoothed a roller which he walks on this piece to be smoothed throughout a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
generator of this part (assumed to be stationary) by means of a combined movement of both hands. We can immediately see that the operation is tiring and tedious.
The present invention relates to an automatic machine for smoothing stamped parts and in particular kitchen utensils. This machine which increases by at least 70% the efficiency of hand-held machines existing to date and which enables the aforementioned operations to be carried out automatically without the slightest fatigue for the person in charge of its operation, is remarkable, in particular in that comprises in combination: a rotary mandrel, on which the workpiece to be smoothed is kept pressed by a tailstock with a rotary plate, capable of being immobilized longitudinally in the clamping position, as known per se;
a smoothing wheel or roller carried by a support slidably mounted on a turret carried by a carriage, movable in the longitudinal direction, so that said wheel can be moved in translation while remaining in contact with the part to be smoothed, with the generators from which it can form any angle thanks to the turret; an elastic device which tends to press the wheel on the part to be smoothed with sufficient and adjustable pressure; means for automatically reciprocating said carriage parallel to the axis of the mandrel; and locking members, combined with fixed, but adjustable stops, allowing the wheel to be kept away from the mandrel during its return stroke.
The aforementioned combination constitutes a unitary assembly of the machine; this preferably comprises two @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sets to which a single worker is assigned, the operating cycles of the two sets being shifted so that when one of them is in the active period, the other is in his return period, which allows the worker to replace a smoothed part by another to be smoothed while the smoothing operation is carried out on the neighboring assembly.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example only: FIG. 1 is a plan view of a smoothing machine according to the invention; FIG. 2 is a view of the rear face thereof.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, the machine which comprises two assemblies, controlled and operated by the same worker, is intended for the successive smoothing of two stamped parts 1 and 1 ', of frustoconical shape (which may constitute, for example, saucepans or other utensils or any parts). This machine comprises, side by side, two longitudinal frames 2 and 3. The worker responsible for the operation is placed in front of the face ab (FIG. 1) of the frame z. On this frame is rotatably mounted a shaft 4, of axis XX, loose in two bearings 5 and 6. This shaft 4 carries between the two bearings 5 and 6 one or more stepped pulleys 7-8 for continuously rotating drive.
At each of its ends, the shaft 4 carries on it two mandrels 9 and 9 'intended to receive the two parts 1 and 1' to be smoothed, for example two parts of truncated shape. These parts are pressed onto the mandrels 9 and 9 'by rotary plates 10-10'.
These plates 10-10 'are mounted idle, as known, at the end of tailstock 11-11' slidably mounted in bearings 12-13. Each tailstock carries keyed on it a lever 14 which. when he is @shot on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
frame 1 engages behind a stop 15 preventing any retreat of the tailstock 11 or 11 'in the direction of the arrow fl or f', that is to say the release of the part 1 or 1 'to be smoothed which is therefore pressed by the mandrel and this permanently with sufficient pressure to prevent any sliding of this part on the corresponding mandrel.
The second frame 3 is mounted to slide horizontally in a direction perpendicular to XX on support guides 15-16 (Figure 1). The movements are ensured by any known means, for example by means of two screws 17, connected by conical pairs 18-19 to a drive shaft 20 with a handwheel 21. The frame 3 ′ comprises over its entire length a longitudinal guide 22, on which can move carriages 23 and 23 ′ with wheel-holder turrets, lateral blocks 24 and 24 ′ and a central block 25, common to the two assemblies. The carriages 23 and 23 'are movable along the slide 22; they are driven by an alternating movement of adjustable amplitude.
This reciprocating movement, parallel to the axis XX, is obtained using a longitudinal screw 26. This screw 26 is connected by a gear train 27-28 to an auxiliary shaft 29, capable of being driven in rotation alternately in one direction then in the other. On this shaft 29 are mounted idly two pulleys 30 and 31 between which is placed an olavetée pulley 32.
These pulleys are combined with two drive oourroires, one 33 straight and the other 34 with crossed strands.
As can be seen, when the belt 33 is on the jogged pulley 32, the cross-strand belt 34 is on the idle pulley 30 while when this cross-strand belt 34 is on the jogged pulley 32, the belt 33 is on the idler pulley. idler pulley 31. The displacement of these belts
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
is ensured by means of two forks 35 and 36, carried by a horizontal bar 37, sliding in guides
38. This bar 37 is articulated at 39 (Figures 1 and 2) on a lever 40, oscillating at 41 on the frame 2. on an extension of this lever 40, is articulated at 41a a connecting rod 42 (Figure 2) whose the other end is articulated at 43 on a part 44, fixed on a longitudinal rod 45.
This rod 45 is movable longitudinally in the frame 3 and it carries, at least, two stops intended to be encountered by two legs of one of the carriages.
23 or 23 '. In the example shown, two stops (46-47) (46'-47 ') are provided for each of the carriages provided with legs (48-49) (48'-49').
On each of the 23-23 'carriages, can turn a 50-50' turret, in which a slide is provided
51-51 'forming a dovetail, the Y-Y or Y'-Y' direction of which can therefore take the desired obliquity relative to the axis XX of the shaft 4 mandrel-holders.
In each slide 51-51 'can slide a support
52-52 'extended on the side of the mandrel by a fork such as 53 carrying the axis such as 54 of a wheel 55 or 55' intended for smoothing and loose on its axis. On the side opposite to the fork, the slide 51 or 51 'is extended by a guide tail such as 56, sliding in a guide 57 fixed by rods 58 to the corresponding carriage.
A spring 59 is interposed between the guide 57 and the slide 51 or 51 'so that under the action of this spring, the tension of which is adjustable, the wheel holder and the wheel tend to move in the direction which tends to press. the wheel on part 1 or the to smooth.
Slider 52 or Sa * carries a roller on top
60-60 'and slightly behind this roller relative to the wheel, a hook 61-61' articulated around an axis such
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
than 62 on the slide. This hook is combined with a stop notch 63 or 63 'carried by the carriage. This stopper is adjustable in position parallel to the YY or Y'Y 'axis. It is given a position such that when the corresponding hook is engaged behind this notch (position shown for the left-hand assembly in FIG. 1) the wheel occupies with respect to the axis XX a position set back such that the distance from the dial
55 or 55 'at the axis XX corresponds or is even slightly greater than the radius R of the large base of the part 1 or 1' to be smoothed.
On either side of each trolley 23-23 'wheel holder, the blocks 24-25-24' are adjustable in position, means, not shown, being provided for immobilizing these blocks in the desired positions. These blocks are naturally traversed freely by the screw 26 which does not drive them. In each block 24-24; ' is slidably mounted, in a direction perpendicular to the axis XX, a slider such as 64, the movements of which are ensured by means of a screw 65, integral with a handwheel 66. On this slider such as 64 is articulated, around an axis 67, which is therefore adjustable in transverse and longitudinal position, a stopper 68 or 68 'whose orientation around the axis such as 67 is adjustable by means of a rod such as 69.
This threaded rod 69 is articulated at 70 on the cleat; it passes inside a die 71, pivotally mounted at 72 on a plate 73, carried by the frame 2. A nut 73 with locknut $ screwed on the rod 69 and bearing against the die 71, make it possible to adjust the useful length of the rod 69 and consequently the orientation of the stopper 68 or 68 '. A locking nut 74 with operating lever 75, screwed onto the oscillation axis 67 of each stop-stop 68-68 ', allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
immobilization of this stopper in the desired angular position.
The central block 25 comprises two stops 76-76 'adjustable, like the previous ones, in position and in orientation and each intended for one of the two sets.
Each set is completed by two stops 78 and 79 or 78'-79 'arranged opposite one another, parallel to the longitudinal axis XX of the machine. The stop 78 or 78 'is adjustable in position for example by screwing into an ear 80 of the frame 3, while the stop 79 or 79' is adjustable for example by means of a buttonhole, such as 81, a stud 82 and a nut 83.
The operation is as follows: Either for smoothing tapered pressed parts ll 'of height h and whose large base has a radius R. We first adjust the machine, that is to say that the bloos 24 -24'-25 are arranged so that the roller 60 or 60 'of the roll holder oouliss comes to meet one or the antrum of the stops 68-76 or 68'-76' after a stroke in one direction or in the other, slightly greater than the height h of the part to be smoothed. As for the stops 78-79 and 78'-79 ', they feel arranged so as to be encountered by the hook 61 or 61' a few moments after the: corresponding roller has come to meet one or the other of the stops 68- 76 or 68'-76 '.
Using the handwheel 21, the assembly carried by the frame 3 is also adjusted, so that when the knobs are in line with the large base of the part to be smoothed, the corresponding hook 61 or 61 'is come behind the stopper 63 or 63 '.
This being said, the operation is as follows: The machine is shown in the position corresponding to the start of the part smoothing period l '; room 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is smoothed, the carriages 23 and 23 'move to the left in the direction of arrow f2. The wheel 55 is held in retait at a distance from the axis XX equal to R because its hook 61 is engaged behind the notch 63, on the other hand the wheel 55 'is to the right of the small base of the part 1' to be smoothed, its hook 61 'is released from the stopper 63', so that under the action of the spring 59 'this wheel 55' presses on the part 1 'with suitable pressure, sufficient to eliminate the folds of this part.
During movement to the left (direction of arrow f2), the wheel 55 'moves along one of the generatrices of the part l' (assumed to be stationary), but, as this part is rotated by the mandrel 9 'with no possible slippage due to the pressure of the plate 10', all the generators of this part scroll in front of the wheel 55 '. As a result, when this wheel 55 ′ arrives in line with the large base of the part 1 ′, this entire part has been in contact with the wheel and is perfectly smooth.
It should be noted that during the movement to the left, the wheel 55 'moves back by an amount corresponding to the difference of the radii of the two bases of the part 11, when the wheel 55' has reached the large base of the part 1 ', the movement continues and a few moments later, thanks to a judicious adjustment of the blocks 24-25-24', the rollers 60-60 'come to meet the stop cleats 68-68'. Under the action of these stops, suitably inclined, the wheel holders 52-52 'are pushed backwards along YY-Y'Y' in the direction of the arrows f3-f4 against the return springs 59- 59 '.
As a result of this recoil of the wheel holders, the hook 61 'of the wheel holder 52' passes behind the stopper 63 ', so that when this hook 61' comes, a slight
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
instant after meeting the stop 79 ', this stop fits: che this hook 61' on the notch 63 '. Conversely, the stop 78 releases the hook 61 from the polette holder 52.
The positions of the two wheel holders are maintained. reversed ; as, in the meantime, the previously smoothed part 1 has been removed thanks to a momentary recoil of the cone-point carried out by the worker and has been replaced by a new part to be smoothed, the set on the left goes to power work while moving the two wheel trolleys to the right. During this movement, the right part l 'which was smoothed during the previous phase above will be, in turn, replaced by a new part to be smoothed. Then the rollers 60 and 60 'will meet the right-hand stops 76 and 68', the hook 61 'will be erased by the stop 78' while the hook 61 will be engaged again; a new operation from right to left will be ready to start again and so on.
