A method and apparatus for making hollow articles of various sizes by winding a strip of sheet material on a rotating mandrel. The invention relates to a method and apparatus for making hollow articles of different sizes by winding a strip of sheet material on a rotating shaft, a strip of metal or other protective material which can be wound on the sleeve. object finished to serve as a frame.
The process is characterized by stretching a certain unrolled length of the tape, coating the underside of this stretched portion with an adhesive before rolling it onto the mandrel and pressing the layers on top of each other. successive sheet material wound on the mandrel, so as to constitute a compact mass, mass to form the body of the object.
The apparatus for carrying out this method is characterized by means for actuating the mandrel, by a pressure roller constantly acting from top to bottom on the upper portion of the surface of the mandrel, so as to bring in intimate contact with the successive layers of material in sheets wound on this mandrel; by means for stretching a certain unwound length of the tape, and by means for coating with an adhesive, before winding it on the mandrel, the taut portion of the tape.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus forming the subject of the invention.

The tape of sheet material, indicated by 5, with which the hollow object is formed, comes from a roller 6 mounted on an axis 4. This tape 5 passes between two deflector rollers 7 and 8, rotating in opposite directions, the roller 8 rotating in the direction of the arrow (fig. 1) and driving the roller 7 in the opposite direction by friction. This rotational movement of the roller 8 is imparted to it by the intermediary of the gear system 9 and of a shaft 10. The roller 8 and the shaft 10 are carried by a rotating frame 12 journalled on a shaft 13. .
The friction discs 14 and 15, carried by the shafts 10 and 13 respectively, constitute a change of speed for the shaft 10 and the roller 8, whereby the amount of sheet material rolled up and the slack produced on the sheet can be controlled. The speed of the shaft 10 is adjusted by moving the disc 14 from the outside to the inside or from the inside to the outside; relative to the disc 15, by means of the arm 16 (fig. 4) which is provided with a worm screw and a helical gear 17, 18 carried on the shaft 19.
The shaft 13 and the disc 15 are driven by a chain '0, which is actuated by the shaft 22. This shaft 22 is actuated, in turn, through the appropriate gear, by the. arm 23, which is driven by pulley 24.
Referring now in particular to the fis. 9, it can be seen that the strip 5 passes over a finishing device comprising the transverse rods 25 and 26. The strip 5 passes above the bar 25 and below the bar 26.
The lower bar 26 is carried by a bracket 27, which is fixed to the upper bar "5, such that when the upper bar is rotated, the lower bar describes an arc of a circle to change the contact surface between strip 5 and rods to adjust the amount of friction between the strip and the rods in proportion to the tensile force produced in the strip.
This oscillation movement of the lower rod is controlled by means of a worm screw 29 (fig. 2), carried on the shaft 30, and meshing with a helical wheel 28 carried by the upper rod 25. The shaft 30 carries at one end thereof a handwheel 32 which can be operated by hand to rotate the shaft. In connection with this tension adjusting device, means have been provided for quickly removing all tension on the strip if necessary. These means include titi neck link 33 maintained on the shaft 30 between fixed collars 34.
An actuating lever 35, connected by a connecting rod 36 to the collar 33, allows the operator to give a rapid back and forth axial movement to the shaft 30, so that the worm 29 acts as a rack for rotating the rods 25 and 26, thereby relieving the tension to which the strip 5 is subjected. A pair of guides 31 is mounted near each end of the rod 25 to guide the strip.
While the strip is under tension, it can be cut into narrower strips if smaller sized articles are desired, by means of a mechanism which will now be described.
A series of knives or cutting discs 37 is mounted on a transverse shaft 38, which can oscillate around the rod I9 taken as the center and being connected to this rod 39 by means 40. This oscillating movement, determining the position of the knives, is coniniandc # by the repi-éserit6 mechanism (fig. 2 and 8). This mechanism comprises an arm 42, carried by the rod 39, which is connected: to the rod 4 ", controlled by the hand lever 44.
The knives 37 are driven by the rotation of the shaft 38, which is connected by a universal joint 45 to a shaft 46 mounted in the bearing, pivoted, 47 and driven by a belt 48 connecting this shaft to the pulley 49 carried by the 'actuating shaft 23. The knives 37 are mounted in a clamping slide 37' which is pinned to the shaft 38 by means of a clamping screw 38 'functioning as a pin, and able to move in a longitudinal groove appropriate, kept in the tree. To guide the strip 5 suitably with respect to the position of the knives, the strip passes over a rod 50.
Thanks to the stiffness of the ten due strip, the cutting is carried out easily and cleanly; furthermore, it is not necessary to have an opposing member serving as a support, since the strip is sufficiently stiff.
While the strip is still under tension, it is covered on one side by means of an adhesive supplied by an adhesive delivery tube 52 (fig. 9) which is provided with a longitudinal opening 53. at its upper part, through which the adhesive can flow. The strip passes under rods 54 placed on either side of this tube 52, so that it is always applied to the opening 53. The adhesive enters the tube 52 via the two ends of this. tube, by pipes 55 connecting these ends to the adhesive reservoir 56. As is more clearly shown in FIG. 2, a valve 56a is mounted in one of the pipes 55, below the level of the pipe 52.
This valve is controlled by means of appropriate connections by the hand lever 57. The position of this valve below the level of the intake tube is important, because it prevents any loss of adhesive after the valve is closed. closed. These losses or leaks could occur if the valve was above the level of the intake tube, because the vertical column of adhesive remaining between the level of the valve and the pipe 52, would create pressure. The adhesive is more effectively applied to the tape when it is stretched, because the tension makes the tape flat and smooth.
While the strip is still tensioned and after it has been cut and covered with adhesive, it is wound up on a rotating mandrel which can have the desired shape [blocky, as shown at 58 (fig. 1) circular, as it is shown at 58 '(fig. 2 and 4)]. These mandrels are mounted on the shafts 59, which are driven to rotate in the direction of the arrow, by means of a suitable gear, by means of the shaft 22. In the beginning, a certain length of the strip 5 is not covered with adhesive; to prevent it from sticking to the mandrel.
Successive layers, on the other hand, are covered with adhesive once the valve 56a has been operated. These successive layers are pressed against each other in intimate contact by the pressure roller 60, which is mounted so as to be able to rotate near one end of a pivoted arm extending horizontally, 62. This arm , rotated at 63, carries an adjustable weight 64, allowing the pressure exerted by the roller to be adjusted. For the operation to take place under good conditions, the roller 60 must have a larger circumferential surface than the surface of each facet of the mandrel.
In some cases, this circumferential surface may even be approximately equal to the peripheral surface of the mandrel. The circumference of the roller shown in fig. 1 is a little lower than the periphery of the man drin. In the case of a polyhedral mandrel, somewhat rapid rotation may cause the corners of the mandrel to sharply push back the roll. To prevent this, a spring 65 is employed, the action of which is faster than that of the weight. The roller is arranged to roll over the periphery of the mandrel and to press across the width of successive layers of the web to bring them into intimate contact, even if there are irregularities in the surface of the mandrel or the formation of band 5.
In order to comply with all these irregularities and variations in the contour, the roller 60 is covered with a flexible and elastic sleeve 66.
The arm 62 carrying the pressure roller is pivoted at 63 at a relatively large distance from the mandrel to the right of the latter (FIG. 1).
A mechanism is also provided for locking the pressure roller in an inactive position, when a certain thickness of wound material has been obtained on the mandrizi. This mechanism comprises a latch 67 which is vertically adjustable in a frame 68 in combination with a console 69 for the latch and a threaded shaft 70 which screws into the frame 68.
Latch 67 engages extension 72 carried at the end of arm 62. As the web winds up on the mandrel, arm 62 rises from the thickness of the web with each revolution of the web. mandrel until the desired thickness has been reached; at this moment, the arm 62 being in the position shown in broken lines (FIG. 1), the extension 72 engages with the latch 67 and is retained in this position by the latter. This device allows the operator, by lowering or lifting the console 69, to adjust the thickness of the material wound on the mandrel.
To accelerate the adhesive bonding action of compressed, preferably heated air is directed onto the strip as it winds up on the mandrel. This air inlet is via a pipe 73.
The mechanism for winding the strip of material, forming the frame of the hollow object on the body of the object formed on the mandrel, will now be described with reference to FIGS. 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11.
A threaded shaft 75, actuated through a series of gears 76 by the shaft 22, is mounted transversely on the apparatus, parallel to the axis of the mandrel.
A carriage 77, sliding on the guide rod 78 is provided with clutch elements 79 to mechanically connect it to the shaft 75. When these clutch elements are in the position shown in FIG. 11, the carriage moves transversely with respect to the apparatus, when the shaft 75 rotates in a direction parallel to the axis of the mandrel.
The upper part 80 of the small carriage rotates about a vertical axis and be fixed in any angular position by means of bolts 83 engaged in the lower part of the carriage and capable of moving in corresponding circular grooves 84, formed in the base plate of the top of the cart. This upper part 80 is provided with frames and bearings for carrying the upper and lower tension rollers 85 and 86, between which the reinforced strip 87 is guided by the guide plate 88.
This guide plate 88 can pivot about a horizontal axis 88 ', so as to be able to reach any inclined position, such as that shown in FIG. 9. The upper roller 85 is subjected to the action of a spring, so as to keep it constantly pressed against the lower roller, in order to adjust the tension exerted on the strip 87.
A brake 89 can also be employed in combination with the lower roller to adjust this tension even more precisely. The guide plate 88 is provided with adjustable guide strips 90, as clearly shown in FIG. 3 and 10.
The operation of the machine as a whole can be briefly summarized as follows: The actuating mechanism of the unwinding roll 8 is set so as to unwind a given web length. This length of unwound strip is brought between the tension rods 25 and 26, the relative positions of which are adjusted by hand by means of the handle 32, in order to adjust the tension force applied to this strip. This stretched strip is then cut into small strips by the knives 37 and is then coated with adhesive on its lower surface and finally always also tensioned, this strip is wound on the mandrel where the successive layers are brought into intimate contact with each other. with the others by the pressure roller 60.
When a sufficient thickness has been reached, the roller 60 is locked in its inactive position. A strip of protective material can be wound around the body thus formed on the mandrel. The winding of this strip is regulated by means of the carriage 77 moving parallel to the axis of the mandrel, along the worm shaft 75. When these operations are completed, the mandrel can be lowered to allow removal. more easily the finished article.
