<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Machine for thinning the edges of a sheet of paper".
The present invention relates to a machine for thinning the edges of a sheet of paper, comprising at least one rotary grinding wheel serving to grind one of the edges.
A machine of this type is known in which the sheet of paper is driven by means of a belt on a rotating roller which it exceeds slightly or between two belts which it exceeds slightly. The sheet is ground as it travels along the edge protruding from the roll, or the belts, by means of a rotating grinding wheel whose axis is perpendicular to the edge. of the sheet and parallel to the mean plane thereof.
This machine has the drawback of giving rise to grinding which is influenced by the stiffness of the edge of the sheet of paper to be ground. In addition, when we want to simultaneously grind two opposite edges of the sheets of paper, we must have as many rolls as there are widths of sheets or modified.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
trust the position of the drive belts. Finally, the edges of the sheets do not exhibit irregularities of the kind obtained with paper produced in the vat.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
To this end, in principle, the machine according to the invention comprises, on the one hand, at least one grinding wheel intended to carry out the grinding of one of the edges, which is arranged with its axis of rotation parallel to the edge to be thinned by grinding and, on the other hand, means for preventing the sheet from being dragged by the grinding wheel during its grinding.
In order to avoid precise adjustment of the grinding wheel with respect to a support for the sheet to be grinded, the machine according to the invention advantageously comprises at least one pair of grinding wheels rotating at the same speed and arranged on either side. other of the sheet of paper parallel to the edge to be ground. In other words, the aforementioned support for the sheet of paper is constituted by a second rotary grinding wheel which does not undergo any wear from the first and vice versa. this variant also has the advantage of grinding the edge of the sheet simultaneously on both sides, which further increases the throughput of the machine.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the aforesaid rotary grinding wheel is driven in a reciprocating movement towards and away from the sheet of paper while the means preventing the sheet from being dragged by the grinding wheel during the grinding of one of its edges are fixed during this operation.
In particular, provision is made for the reciprocating movement of the aforesaid rotary grinding wheel to take place parallel to the mean plane of the sheet of paper.
In the event that the machine includes grinding wheels for simultaneously grinding two opposite edges of the sheet of paper, this
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
last embodiment is provided with grindstones which simultaneously approach the middle of the sheet of paper until two opposite edges of the latter are grinded and then simultaneously move away from these edges.
In order to achieve the reciprocating movement of the grinding wheels, they can advantageously be mounted on carriages integral with nuts engaged on threaded rods which are driven by a rotational movement in one direction then in the other.
In this case, the construction of the machine can be simplified by carrying the aforementioned carriages by the threaded rods. in order to be able to simultaneously grind the opposite edges of sheets of paper for different widths thereof, using a machine according to the invention, there is also provided a disengagement member between the movable assembly carrying the grinding wheels and the mechanism which causes this movement and a member making it possible to bring the said crew by hand to different distances from the axis of the sheets of paper after disengaging the mechanism which causes the reciprocating movement.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto and which represent schematically, and by way of example only, one embodiment of a machine according to the invention.
FIG. 1 schematically represents, in perspective, the operating principle of a machine according to the invention.
FIG. 3 is a vertical section of a machine according to the invention, by a plane represented by the line II-II of FIG. 3.
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the same machine, by a plane shown by line III-III of Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows schematically the relative angular position of cams involved in the operation
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the machine.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
In FIG. 1, there is schematically shown a pair of rotary grindstones 3 and 4 rotating respectively in the direction of arrows X and Y as well as another pair of rotary grinders 5 and 6 respectively rotating in the direction of arrows and T. The rotating grindstones of each pair are arranged so that their axis of rotation is parallel to the edges to be thinned such as the edge 7 of a sheet of paper 8 which is prevented from being dragged by the grinding wheels during grinding. lage the edges, as a result of its clamping between a fixed block 9 and a block 10 which can be moved in the direction of the double arrow U. The grinding wheels 3 to 6 have a length at least equal to the length of the sheet of paper to treat.
Grinding wheels 3 and 4, as well as 5 and 6, rotate at the same speed and are arranged on either side of the sheet of paper to be grinded. consequently, if the pair of grinding wheels 3, 4 and the pair of grinding wheels 5,6 are equidistant from the middle of the sheet 8 and if the four aforementioned grinding wheels are simultaneously brought closer to this middle, following the double arrows V, it happens a moment when they simultaneously grind the two opposite edges such as 7 and if, then, the pairs of grinding wheels are simultaneously moved away from the opposite edges, it is possible, by moving the block 10 away from the block 9, to release in the direction of the arrow W shows the treated sheet and replace it with another.
In the machine shown in Figures 2 and 3, the grinding wheels 3 and 4 are mounted on carriages II and 12 (figure 3) while the grinding wheels 5 and 6 are mounted on a carriage 13 shown in figure a and on a carriage seem - ble which is not shown in any figure. The carriage 11 is integral with nuts 14 engaged on threaded rods 15 and 16 driven by a rotational movement in one direction and then in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the other in the manner which will be indicated later. The carriage 12 is integral with nuts 17 engaged on threaded rods 18 and 19 (FIG. 3) also driven by a rotational movement in one direction and then in the other.
The carriage 13 (FIG. 2) is integral with nuts 20 engaged on parts of the rods 18 and 19 which are threaded in the opposite direction from the parts on which the nuts 17 of the carriage 12 are engaged. A carriage similar to carriage 13 is secured to similar nuts
15 and 16, with nuts 20 but engaged on parts of. rods / threaded in the opposite direction of the parts on which the nuts 14 of the carriage 11 are engaged. It can be seen that, by the arrangement which has just been described, the aforesaid carriages are carried by the threaded rods 15, 16, 18 and 19.
The distance between the wheels 3 and 4 or between the wheels 5 and 6 must be able to be adjusted in particular according to the thickness of the paper to be treated. For this purpose, the bearings 21 and 22 of the grinding wheel 3 have ovalized holes towards the vdsine grinding wheel 4. In these holes pass bolts 23 and 24 (figure 2) which serve to tighten the bearings 21 and 22 against the carriages 11 and 12.
In Figure 2, it can be seen that the bolts 23 and 24 have a smaller diameter than the holes 25 and 26 through which they pass. Similarly, the bearing 27 (Figure 2) 'has. holes 28 and 29 in which pass bolts 30 and 31 of a smaller diameter than that of these holes, these bolts serving to tighten the bearing 27 against the carriage 13.
A similar arrangement is adopted for mounting the other bearing of the grinding wheel 5 on the carriage similar to the carriage 13 and which is not shown.
The reciprocating movement towards and away from the grindstones of the sheet of paper is achieved by means of a toothed sector 32 driven by an alternating pivoting movement caused by a cam 33. The sector
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
toothed 32 has a slide 34 (Figure 3) extending at different distances from the pivot axis of the sector. In the case shown in the drawing, this sector is mounted freely on a non-threaded part of the rod 19. A pusher 35 (figure 3) can be fixed, for example, by a bolt 36 (figure 2) in whatever door. point of the slide 34, this pusher carries a roller 37 in contact with the cam 33.
The toothing of the toothed sector 32 meshes with a pinion 38 wedged on the threaded rod 18. The reciprocating rotational movement of the latter is communicated to the other threaded rods 15, 16 and 19 by means of toothed wheels 39, 40 , 41 and on which passes a chain 43
The rotation of grinding wheels 3, 4,5 and 6 is transmitted from a pulley 44 wedged on a motor shaft 45. A belt 46 passes over this pulley passing over another pulley 47.
This is secured to a pulley 48 over which passes a belt 49 wound on pulleys 50 and 51. The pulley 50 is secured to the shaft 52 (Figure 3) of the grinding wheel 4. This shaft carries a pinion 53 ( figure 2) which meshes with a pinion 54 wedged on the shaft of grinding wheel 3, while the pulley 51 is integral with the shaft 55 (figure 3) on which is wedged a pinion 56 which meshes with a similar pinion 57 wedged on the shaft of grinding wheel 6, this last pinion in turn meshing with a pinion 58 wedged on the shaft of grinding wheel 5.
We see / by this set denote 53, 54, 56, 57 and 58, if the belt 49 moves in the direction of arrow S (figure 2), the grinding wheels 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively rotate in the direction of X, Y, Z and T arrows.
-In practice, the amplitude of the reciprocating movement of grinding wheels 3, 4, 5 and 6 may be only a few centimeters.
Under these conditions, so that the machine can process sheets of very different widths, it is important to be able to adjust the average position of the pair of grinding wheels 3,4 @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and of the pair of grinding wheels 5.6 relative to the axis of the sheets of paper, for this purpose, a disengaging member is provided between, on the one hand, the reciprocating carriages such as 11, 12, 13 bearing the grindstones, and the mechanism, which causes this movement. A member is also provided for bringing the said carriages by hand to different distances from the axis of the sheets of paper after disengaging this mechanism.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the pinion 38 is wedged on the threaded rod 18 by means of a pressure screw which it suffices to unscrew to disengage the aforesaid carriages from the toothed sector 32. The rod carries it a crank 59 which, by its rotation, causes the movement of the carriages towards or away from the axis of the sheets of paper. When these carriages are in the desired position relative to the sheet of paper to be ground, the pinion 38 is again made integral with the threaded rod 18. The crank 59 can advantageously be mounted removably on the threaded rod 1a, so that it can be removed after adjusting the distance between the pairs of grinding wheels and before starting the machine.
The grinding wheels 3 and 4 are shown in solid lines in one of their extreme positions; they are shown in phantom in the other extreme position. The belts 46, 49 and the pulleys 47, 48 are also shown in phantom in the latter position.
In the machine shown, the sheets of paper are moved in the direction of arrow W by belts 60, 61 and 62 (Figure 2). these belts pass over pulleys 53, 64 and 65 wedged on a shaft 66 (FIG. 3). and on similar belts, one of which, designated by 67, is shown in FIG. 3. On the shaft 66 is wedged a thumb. lie 68 (figure) on which a belt passes 69 (xxxxxx)
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
also passing over a pulley 70. The latter pulley is wedged on a shaft 71 rotating at the same speed as one which is parallel to it. shaft 72 / These two shafts carry for this purpose identical helical pinions designated respectively by 73 and 74 (Figure 3) which mesh with screws 75 and 76 wedged on the shaft 45.
The shaft 72 carries the cam 33 which was discussed previously.
The sheets of paper which rest on the belts 60, 61 and 62 enter the machine advancing in the direction of the arrow W until they are stopped by a retractable stopper 78. This stopper can be brought underneath. of the upper surface of the upper strand of the belts 60, 61 and 62 by pivoting about a pivot 79. It is connected to a pusher 80 (FIG. 3) carrying a roller 81.
This rests on a cam 82 wedged on the shaft 72. A return spring 83 maintains the roller 81 in contact with the cam 82. The cleat 78 is connected by a connecting rod 84 to a second retractable cleat 85 (figure 3. This is provided on the path followed by the sheet, to stop the latter in front of the place where the grinding takes place. Thanks to the connecting rod 84, it is controlled in synchronism with the stopper 78, so to retract at the same time as the latter and to return with it to its working position.
The cam 82 and the cam 33, which are wedged on the shaft 72, therefore rotate at the same speed. They occupy a relative angular position of the kind represented in FIG. 4. This position is such that it brings the stop tabs 78 and 85 out of the path followed by the sheets near that the rotary grinders 3, 4, 5 and 6 have moved away from a sheet of which they have just grinded the edges and it allows these stops to return to the stop position when the last sheet which has just been treated has left the place of the grinding.
In the machine shown in Figures 2 and 3, the

movable block 10 is integral with two pushers 86 and 87 each carrying a roller designated by 88 and 89, respectively. These rollers rest on identical cams 90 and 91 wedged on the shafts. 71 and 72 These cams rotate at the same speed and occupy the same angular position.
This speed is also the same as that of cams 33 and 82. The angular position of cams 90 and 91 is such that the lower block 10 is lifted in order to press a sheet of paper against the upper block 9 before the grinding wheels 3 , 4,5 and 6 only come in contact with the edges of the sheets and lowered after the millstones have left the sheets. This relative angular position is of the kind shown in FIG. 4.
The pushers 86 and 87 carry a return roller 93 for the lower end of the belt 61.
The movable lower block 10 is disposed so as to lie slightly below the upper surface of the upper strand of the belt 61 serving for driving the paper. It has a groove 92 (figure z) allowing the free passage of the belt. 61 while its upper surface presses a sheet against the fixed block 9 which is located at a level higher than that of the upper strand of the belt 61 serving for moving the sheets.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiment shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, provided that these modifications are not in contradiction with the object of each of the following claims.
It goes without saying, for example, that in principle the reciprocating movement of the rotating grinding wheels in and out of the sheet of paper, instead of being directed.

parallel to the middle plane of the sheet of paper could be directed perpendicularly. to this plane.
CLAIMS
1. Machine for thinning the edges of a sheet of paper, comprising at least one rotating wheel serving to thin one of the edges, characterized in that it comprises, on the one hand, at least one wheel intended for perform the grinding of one of the edges, which is arranged with its axis of rotation parallel to the edge to be thinned by grinding and, on the other hand, means for preventing the sheet from being dragged by the grinding wheel during its grinding.
