Claims (7)

  1. Superfinishing Machine, using abrasive material, to machine the journals of a shaft and more specifically the camlobes (4) or all the camlobes and journals of a camshaft (3), with the camshaft being held between centres (1, 2) and made to rotate around its axis during the machining process, the machine incorporating a plurality of arms (8) mounted on the same carriage (7), so that they can be made to pivot in parallel planes, these being perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the component, the arms (8) being divided into two groups (8a, 8c, 8e, 8g, 8b, 8d, 8f, 8h) located on either side of the workpiece, in such a way that they can be made to pivot around two adequately spaced pivot shafts (9a, 9b), each arm being provided with a mechanism (22), ensuring movement and pressure, in order to apply an abrasive material (11) with a predetermined load against one of the shaft journals which is to be machined, whereby an abrasive tape (11), which is unwound from a new tape feeding spool (12, 23) and rewound onto a used tape receiving spool (13, 25), is associated with each of the said arms (8), that each of the said arms is provided with a means (14, 29) of applying the abrasive tape against the journal (4) to be machined and that the machine incorporates common means, during the machining process, of continuously driving all the receiving spools (13, 25) of the abrasive tapes (11).
  2. Machine in accordance with claim 1, whereby each arm (8) is provided with a removable fixture, onto which can be fitted a removable cassette (10), housing an abrasive tape feeding spool (12) and an abrasive tape receiving spool (13), a roller (14) applying the tape against the journal to be machined, as well as the necessary means of coupling the receiving spool of the cassette to the said drive means.
  3. Machine in accordance with claim 2, whereby the said coupling means incorporate a small shaft (15) rotating within the said arm (8), carrying on one side of the arm the coupling arrangements with the cassette receiving spool (13), and on the other side of the arm, a wheel or pulley (16) connected by means of a drive-belt or a similar means of transmission (17) to the wheel or pulley (18) of a drive shaft (9) which is common to all the cassette receiving spools of all the arms, the drive shaft also acting as a pivot shaft for all the arms (8) located on one side of the workpiece.
  4. Machine in accordance with any of the previous claims, whereby the two pivot shafts (9a, 9b) for the two sets of arms (8), consist of two drive-shafts linked to each other by a drive belt or a similar device. (19, 20)
  5. Machine in accordance with claim 1, whereby each arm (8) is provided with an abrasive tape application roller (29) and the abrasive tapes (11), associated with all the arms, are unwound from the non-driven feed spools (23), mounted on a common shaft (24) and rewound on the driven tape receiving spools (25) mounted on a drive shaft (26) common to all tape receiving spools for all the machine arms.
  6. Machine in accordance with any of the above claims, whereby the arms (8) are equally positioned on either side of the component (3) to be machined, in such a way that the means for applying the abrasive tape (14, 29) used for machining the successive journals (4) of the workpiece are applied alternately from opposite sides of the component against the journals to be machined.
  7. Machine in accordance with claim 6, whereby the arms (8) are made to pivot around two axis (9a, 9b) in such a way that, each time, two arms (8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e, 8f, 8g, 8h) pivot in the same plane between two successive journals to be machined, whilst the means for applying the abrasive tape (14, 29) are located on opposite sides of the said two arms.
