<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
.La présente invention a pour objet : - un mécanisme nouveau et perfectionné de for- mation de têtes qui peut être actionné à une vitesse re- lativement élevée; - un mécanisme ou une machine analogue de forma- tion de têtes, dans lesquels la crosse est actionnée par un mécanisme à ciseaux qui est commandé par un vilebre- quin monté au voisinage de l'embase de la machine ou du plancher, de manière à réduire les vibrations provenant du fonctionnement de la machine; - une structure perfectionnée de crosse et des dispositifs perfectionnés servant à la supporter, de ma- nière à la faire coulisser sur le banc d'une machine dans un mécanisme de formation de têtes commandé par un dispo- sitif à ciseaux;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Sur le dessin annexé : - la figure 1 est une vue en plan par dessus d'un mécanisme de formation de têtes conforme à l'inven- tion ; - la figure 2 est une coupe faite par 2-2 de la figure 1; - la figure 3 est une coupe faite par 3-3 de la figure 2, en regardant en direction de la crosse de la machine ; - la figure 4 est une coupe faite par 4-4 de la figure 2 en direction du banc portant la matrice de la machine ; - la figure 5 est une coupe faite par 5-5 de la figure 3, représentant le vilebrequin et l'arbre latéral servant à commander les diverses pièces de la machine; - la figure 6 est une coupe faite par 6-6 de la figure 4, cette coupe étant faite par l'axe d'alimenta- tion;' ' - la figure 7 représente un détail de l'une des branches du mécanisme à ciseaux dont la branche asso- ciée est illustrée en traits mixtes;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The present invention relates to a mechanism for forming heads or the like and more particularly to a machine for forming heads of bolts or the like after a workpiece or blank has been severed from it. a section of raw rod. As described, the invention is applied to a double-acting machine provided for this purpose in which two punches are supported on a stock moving back and forth, and are moved from one opt to the next. 'the other in synchronism with the movement of the butt so that one of the punches is aligned with the matrix of the machine during one stroke and the second punch is aligned with the matrix during the next stroke, being understood that the machine has only one die.
A machine of this type has been devised in the invention in which the movable butt which carries the punches is controlled by a mechanism or scissor device which is spread out and closed by a main crankshaft extending transversely to the body. machine bench and placed under the links of said scissor mechanism.
Thanks to this arrangement, the crankshaft, which is a usual source of vibration from the crankpin eccentricity, is located at a low height above the floor, which reduces the moment of the vibrational forces.
The structure of the scissor device is such that the pressures determining the formation of the heads are supported by the scissor links and are not transmitted to the crankshaft. As a result, this ... latest can be mounted on roller bearings and the

spin faster than can be done with machines in which the crankshaft is connected directly to the stock. In addition, the latter is given relatively large dimensions, the punches are moved horizontally in front of the front part of the stick and new devices have been provided for controlling the movement of the punches.
In addition, improvements have been made to other features of the machine, such as, for example, improvements to the bearing surfaces of the scissor links, to the structure of the stock and to the mechanism for stopping and severing the metal wires. , which will be described more particularly below.
The present invention relates to: - a new and improved head forming mechanism which can be operated at a relatively high speed; - a mechanism or similar machine for forming heads, in which the butt is actuated by a scissor mechanism which is controlled by a crankshaft mounted in the vicinity of the base of the machine or of the floor, so as to reduce vibrations from machine operation; - an improved stock structure and improved devices serving to support it, so as to slide it on the bed of a machine in a head forming mechanism controlled by a scissor device;
a head-forming mechanism of the type described, in which a pad or a roller is provided between the branches of the scissor mechanism to apply pressure thereon during the working strokes of the machine, and improved devices for of-

place the punches mounted on the stock horizontally during its reciprocating movement.
The general means of the present invention are constituted by the above characteristics and by new characteristics and combinations of parts which will be described below.
In the accompanying drawing: - Figure 1 is a top plan view of a head forming mechanism according to the invention; - Figure 2 is a section taken through 2-2 of Figure 1; - Figure 3 is a section taken through 3-3 of Figure 2, looking towards the butt of the machine; - Figure 4 is a section taken through 4-4 of Figure 2 towards the bench carrying the die of the machine; - Figure 5 is a section taken through 5-5 of Figure 3, showing the crankshaft and the side shaft for controlling the various parts of the machine; FIG. 6 is a section taken through 6-6 of FIG. 4, this section being taken through the feed axis; FIG. 7 shows a detail of one of the branches of the scissor mechanism, the associated branch of which is illustrated in phantom;
- Figure 8 is a side elevational view of the branch shown in Figure 7.
To illustrate an embodiment of the invention, there is shown in the drawing a head forming machine which comprises a bed or frame 10 on the front part of which is mounted a bed 11 of die ( figure
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
2) carrying a die 12 comprising an opening 13 intended to receive the part to be machined.
An ejection rod 14, which is mounted on the die bed in the usual manner, is controlled by a lever 15 from a rod 16 which can be moved back and forth. in a classic way. On the machine bed (Figure 6) are also mounted two feed rollers 17 and 18 which can be controlled in any suitable manner to send the raw material rod 19, by a passage 20 made in the bed and through the face. of the die block, against a feed stopper 21 comprising internally a stud 22 of hardened steel against which the raw rod bears.
As shown, the feed stopper 21 is L-shaped and has an orizon arm. tal 23 extending forwards above the bench and pierced with passages 24 which are traversed by screws 25 for adjustably fixing the stopper to a block
26 itself fixed to the bench. The position of this feed stop member can be adjusted with precision by means of adjustment screws 27 which bear against it and which are screwed to the block 26 after passing through a tab.
28.
The device for severing a workpiece from the raw rod comprises a severing element 30 which is fixed to an arm 31 articulated to the frame at 32 (FIG. 4). An articulation pin 33 connects to the arm 31 a tensioner 34 with reverse threads, the other 'end of which is articulated at 35 to a lever 36 which is itself articulated to the bench 37. This lever comprises on either side. from its articulation an arm 38 which carries a cam follower roller 39 against which one of the two disconnecting cams 40 can bear.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
On the bench is also articulated at 37 a second lever 41 carrying a cam follower roller 42 which is in contact with the periphery of a cooperating sectioning cam 43. On the arm 38 of the lever is formed a projection 44 which abuts against a tab 45 on the lever 41, and to the lever 36 is fixed an adjusting screw 46, the end of which bears against a frangible plate 47 placed on the lever 41.
Thanks to this arrangement, the levers 36 and 41 are fixed together rigidly but in an adjustable manner, but in the event of abnormal resistance to the action of the disconnecting element 30, the frangible plate 47 breaks, which stops the operation. lever 36 during its travel in the direction of operation and thus prevents breakage of machine parts. Further, because a two-cam arrangement is provided for controlling the cam follower 39 or the roller 42, the reciprocating movement of the disconnecting member is determined mechanically in both directions. . A plunger 48 with an antagonist spring is mounted in the arm 31 so as to make it bear against a stop 49 provided on the frame, so that the last part of the movement of the cutting lever 31 takes place under elastic pressure.
This prevents play or stoppage resulting from wear of the articulation pins 33 and 35 when the cut blank is fed to the head forming die. It goes without saying that the cutting member feeds the workpiece or blank to the die 13 after it has been severed.
4 shown at 50 in Figure 2 the butt which is mounted on a slider 51 for the butt support and which is fixed there and keyed by a key 52. This slider is fixed to two bars 53 which slide in bearings 54 and 55 provided in the bench. Like him-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Shown in FIG. 3, these bars are notably spaced apart from one another, so that the support of the butt, which is itself relatively bulky, benefits from a considerable bearing on the frame.
The crcsse is controlled from a crankshaft 56 which comprises a crank pin 57. On this subject, it will also be shown that this crankshaft controls a side shaft 58 by means of bevel gears 59 to which the side shaft and the shut-off camshaft 43 are respectively fixed.
On the crank pin 57 is mounted a connecting rod 60 (Figure 2) whose foot has the shape of a yoke so as to delimit spaced legs or ears 61 (Figure 1) in which extends an axis 62, which controls the mechanism. - me with scissors in a way that will be described later.
The scissor mechanism which controls the butt has two scissor branches 63 and 64, the branch 63 being articulated to the butt by a pin 65, and a cushion 66 is placed between the latter and the adjacent surface of a pin. recess 67 which is made in the stick and in which the end of said branch is housed. It should be noted that the axis 65 is mounted with a certain play in the end of the branch 63 so that the latter abuts against the bearing 66 during the active or working stroke of the stick and stops the pressure. - Zion coming from axis 65.
Similarly, the branch 64 of the scissor mechanism is articulated by a pin 68 to a block 69 which is adjustably mounted on the b & nc as will be described later and in which is formed a recess 70 containing a bearing 71 similar to the bearing 66 previously described with regard to the branch 63 of the scissor mechanism. Here again, the shaft 68 is mounted with
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a certain play in the branch 64 so that the end thereof bears against the bearing during the working strokes of the scissor mechanism.
The block 69 is connected to the bench by a screw 72 which passes through a bore 73 formed in a part of the bench and which is screwed into this block. The latter can be adjusted by means of a wedge 74 which is mounted between the chamfered rear edge of the block 69 and part 75 of the bench.
This wedge can be moved vertically by means of an adjusting screw 76 so that the block 69 can be moved forward and backward with respect to the bench to adjust the final position of the butt and the punches it carries.
Screws 77 allow the block to be brought against the leading edge of wedge 74.
As clearly illustrated in Figure 7, the branch 63 of the scissor mechanism is subdivided into two parts at its rear end so as to form two spaced articulation eyes 79 which are housed between corresponding articulation eyes 80 provided on the branch. 64 of the scissor mechanism, and the hinge pin 62 passes through these eyes. In addition, the legs of the scissor mechanism have intermediate projections 81 and 82 which include curved recessed portions 83 and 84 (Fig. 2). Bushings 85 and 86 are mounted in these recessed portions, and a roller 87 which surrounds this hinge pin fits tightly against the bearings 85 and 86.
The axis 62 is mounted with a certain clearance in the roller 86 so that the latter withstands the forces coming from this axis during the working strokes of the scissor mechanism, the forces being transmitted from the roller directly to the branches. in scissors to advance the butt.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
It can be seen that the butt is brought forward twice during one total stroke of the connecting rod 60 (i.e. during one complete revolution of the crankshaft 56) since it is advanced and recalled once during of the downstroke of the connecting rod and a second time during the upstroke of the latter. In addition, it can be seen that when the hinge pin 62 of the scissor mechanism is in the upper position shown in Figure 2, it is slightly further from the line passing through the pins 65 and 68. only when it is in its lower position. Therefore, the first stroke or stroke of the butt which serves to form a cone on the raw material wire is a little longer than the second stroke or stroke of formation of the head.
As shown, two punches 88 and 89, carried by the handle, are mounted on punch holders 90 and 91, themselves fixed in an adjustable manner to a support or carriage 92 (FIGS. 2 and 3). This support is slidably mounted so as to move transversely to the butt in a horizontal direction, by means of a dovetail part 93 which is fixed to the support and which is held against the front of the butt. stock by counter-keys 94 and 95.
The support 92 has a rearwardly extending arm 96 which is disposed in a housing 97 formed in a slide 98 which can slide on the machine bed in carrying members 99 and 100. This arm slides between wear plates 101 and 102 which are fixed to the slider 98 in the housing 97, so that when the butt is moved back and forth, the arm 96 slides back and forth in the housing 97. Thanks to this arrangement, it is understood that when the slide 98 is moved transversely
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
on the machine bench during the back and forth movement of the stick, the support 92 of the punches is moved transversely to the grip in a horizontal direction to align first one of the punches, then the other punch, with the machining die 12.
At one end of the slide 98 is articulated one end of a rod 104, the other end of which is articulated to a short lever 105 itself articulated in 106 at the upper end of a return lever 10'7 articulated in 108 on the bench. The lever 105 is held rigidly in position relative to the lever 107 by means of two adjustment screws 109 and 110, which are screwed into the lever 107 and which bear against the lever 105, these screws being respectively provided on either side. 'of the axis of articulation of the latter (Figure 3).
A lever 112, also articulated to the articulation axis 108, is fixed to the lever 107 by an adjustment screw 113 which is screwed into the latter and which bears against an arm 114 of the lever 112.
The lever 107 has at its lower end an arm 115 which is inclined relative to the upper end of the lever. This arm comprises at its free end a roller 116 which bears against the periphery of a displacement control cam 117 and, likewise, the lower end of the arm 112 carries a roller 118 which can bear against the periphery of a movement. cooperating displacement control cam 119.
As illustrated in Figures 3 and 5, the cams 117 and 119 are mounted on the side shaft 58 which, as will be remembered, also carries the shutoff cams 40 and 43.
As previously mentioned, the punches 90 and 91 are adjustably mounted on the support.

port or carriage 92. This setting is shown in FIG. 3 where it can be seen that each punch holder has a slot 120 intended to receive a bolt 121 screwed into the support. Likewise, the punch holders are fixed to the support by their upper end by means of adjusting screws 122, which allows them to be adjusted in any direction. In addition, stroke limiting screws 123, mounted at adjustable on the front face of the stock, are used to limit horizontal movements of the punch support.
The crankshaft is driven from any suitable motive source by a pulley 124 (figure 5), and at the end of the crankshaft is keyed in the vicinity of the pulley a cam 125 which cooperates with the rod 16 (figure 1 ) to control the ejection lever 15 and the ejection rod 14 so as to expel the workpiece from the die. It will also be noted that the crankshaft 56 is mounted in roller bearings 126 and 127 provided in the bed. Thus, the crankshaft can be rotated at a relatively high speed, due to the operation of the scissor stick mechanism whereby the resulting thrust of the stick is supported by the scissor mechanism and not by the crankshaft as this. would be the case if this thrust were exerted directly on the hook.
In addition, it will be noted that the side shaft 58 which carries the displacement cams 117 and 119 as well as the sectioning cams 40 and 43, is also mounted in the bed by means of roller bearings 128 and 129.
