<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Until now, power transmissions have been effected through belts and gears or through friction systems. For example, in road rollers, the driving wheel is moved by chains or gears and this system has not presented any drawbacks as long as the rotating members.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tifs of the road rollers behaved like the wheels of any vehicle.
In modern road rollers, on the other hand, in which the large wheel which has to compress the temperature is also vibrating at high speed, the vibrations of this wheel will be transmitted to the gears or chains, preventing proper operation of the transmission and by stressing the elements in such a way that rupture occurs quickly.
One has now found, after many experiments, that the disadvantages deriving from the transmission of vibrations are totally eliminated if the power transmission is carried out by means of rubberized wheels which may or may not be pneumatic.
The rubberized wheels used in this transmission can be single or multiple, and mounted either in parallel, to increase grip, or one after the other to constitute a set of wheels, possibly with different diameters, of so as to be able to carry out a multiplication or a reduction according to the needs, in the same way as in known gear trains.
The accompanying drawings show schematically by way of example some embodiments of the dire and eu * principle of the present invention.
Figure 1 shows, in a fully schematic side view, the embodiment of the transmission with a choutée wheel applied to a cylinder of a road roller.
Figures and 3 show in front view two positions of a transmission with rubberized wheels, coupled to a usual belt transmission, of [Den to be able to thus obtain a reversal of movement.
FIG. 4 represents a side view of a steamroller to which the device forming the object of the present invention is applied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In Figure 1, is shown a part of a road roller, the reference 1 designating the cylinder resting by pressing on the ground and which, according to modern technical requirements for the construction of grounds, is subjected to vibration.
Reference 2 designates a rubberized wheel rotatably mounted at 4 at the end of an arm 3 which, in turn, oscillates about an axis 5 and is subject to control members which are not shown in the figure. but the effect of which is indicated by arrows 7 and 7 ', that is to say, the rubberized wheel can be pressed against the cylinder 1 or moved away from it as required.
The rubberized wheel 2 is rotated by a transmission, for example a belt 8 coming from a motor, so that this wheel 2 is pushed in the direction of arrow 7 against the drum 1, transmitting its rotation to the latter , while at the same time absorbing the vibrations of said drum, so that these vibrations are not transmitted by the belt 8 to the other elements making up the transmission and to the driving members.
The embodiment of Figure 4 shows, schematically, a steamroller-whose drum 1 is mounted on a frame 10 which also supports the wheel 9 On the frame 10 is mounted a motor 11 and from this leaves a transmission 6 which rotates the wheel 2 provided with a tire or possibly a solid rubber crown. This wheel 2 rotating around the axis 4 is mounted on an arm 3 connected to a balance 12 mounted at 13 on the frame of the motor 11, on the one hand, while, on the other hand, said balance is mounted at 14 on the frame 10, by means of a threaded pin 15 passing through a collar-nut 16 provided at the end of the balance 12.
The threaded axle '15 is rotated on itself by a crank 17 which allows the pressure of the rubberized wheel 2 to be adjusted by hand on the support.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
area of the drum 1. Around the threaded axle 15 can be arranged a helical spring 18 which, together with the devices for fixing the various positions of the crank 17, after the pressure has been adjusted, ensures the stabilization of the grip. to the desired value.
Another important application of the rubberized wheel transmission, forming the object of the invention, is shown in Figures 2 and 3 and consists in transmitting the movement between two shafts 19 and 20 by means of two rubberized wheels 21 and 22 each mounted respectively. on their own tree. At least one of these shafts 19 and 20 is movable transversely and can be brought closer or less to the other shaft so as to push the rubberized wheels against each other to create the desired grip. In this way, there is obtained an effect of bringing together and separating, and also of friction, which can be used in any transmission, but especially in transmissions in which one of the two members is subjected to vibration.
If, in addition to the rubberized wheels 21 and 22, the pulleys 23 and 24 are mounted by suitably adjusting the distance between them, so that the belts 25 mounted on these two pulleys have a length such that they remain relaxed when the two wheels 21 and 22 are in contact (figure 2 while they come under tension when the rubberized wheels 21 and 22 are separated (figure 3 one obtains an operation of great interest since one obtains the transmission in one direction of rotation when the adhesion is due to the contact of the rubberized wheels 21 and 22, while the transmission is obtained in the direction opposite to the previous tooth, when the two rubberized wheels are separated and the belts 23 which join the pulleys 23 and 24 are put under tension.
In particular,
as indicated by arrows 26 in FIG. 2, when the two wheels 21 and 22 are in contact, we
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
obtains on the two shafts the opposite directions of rotation following arrows 6, that is to say that, while the wheel 21 rotates in one direction, the wheel 22 which is in contact with this wheel 21 will rotate in the opposite direction , whereas, when the two wheels 21 and 22 are moved apart (figure 3 and the belts 5 come into operation, we will have, as in all the usual belt transmissions, an identical direction of rotation for the shaft 19 and for the 'shaft 20 as indicated by arrows 27 Again in the case of the transmissions shown in figures and 3 the pressure or tension may be produced by levers, weights, screws, springs,
according to requirements, these means being left to the discretion of the technician and being chosen according to the various applications.
