<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to an armchair of the type described in Belgian patent no. 497.986, or an armchair, the seat of which is connected by its front edge or near the said edge, to the frame so as to pivot on a transverse axis and, further back, is supported by an arm also connected to the frame and pivoting on a transverse axis, said arm being held in an inclined position rising towards the rear of the seat, by the bias of a spring, in which the tension increases when the load of the seat is increased or moved backwards, said seat repo - resting freely on the upper end of said arm this support, the angle between said support arm and the vertical not exceeding 30 when said seat is free of load.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In this wheelchair known the boom, is fixed, by one end, 1 a fixed part of the support arm and, by the other end, to a screw cooperating with a nut, so as to allow adjustment of the prior tension of said spring in proportion to the weight of the person using the wheelchair, by operating said nut.
Although this known chair, in general, provides satisfactory service, it has still been found to have a certain drawback. Indeed, if the person seated on the chair, leaning against the backrest, moves his center of gravity backwards, it is obvious that the seat will lower against the inaction of the spring, but this lowering will be too small if the user is of a relatively light weight, and too great if the weight of the user is relatively very heavy, even if the preliminary tension of the spring has been adjusted judiciously, according to the weight of the user, so that the seat is located approximately in a horizontal plane, when said user is seated in an upright position on said seat.
In order to remedy this drawback, the invention consists in that the spring is connected, by its anterior end, to the frame and, by its rear end, to a part supported by the support arm, said part being capable of displacement generally parallel to said support arm. This means makes it possible in each case to adjust, in proportion to the needs of a given user, the prior tension of the spring, so that, for any position that the rear end of the spring may occupy, the tension of the spring. ci is set to the correct value, thus allowing every person, whose weight is between 50 and 140 kg., to sit comfortably, not only in an upright position, but also leaning against the backrest, in any reclined position wanted.
The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 1 represents part of the frame of an armchair according to the invention, in plan view; Figure 2 shows a side view of the same part; Figure 3 shows, in side view on a smaller scale, the armchair with the seat and the backrest, as well as a person seated on this chair and leaning against the backrest.
The frame consists of a 4 foot resting on rollers
5 and supporting a vertical axis 6. The upper end of this axis carries a cross member 7, each end of this cross member carrying an inclined arm 8, respectively 9, rising forward and rigidly fixed to said end of said cross member. A transverse rod
10 is supported, so as to be able to turn, in the front ends of said arms, this rod, together with two direct bars. reared and integral with said rod, constitutes the hinged support casing of the seat 13 and of the back 14.
At the arm 8 (respectively 9), near the cross member 7, there is articulated a support arm (paired) 15 (respectively 16), pivoting on a pivot which is joined to said arm 8 (respectively 9) and parallel to the rod 10. The support arm is provided, towards its free end, with a roller 15a, (16a), the axis of which is also parallel to the rod 10, and with a hook 15b, (16b). Lugs 11a 12a, integral with the bars II, 12, serve as stops against lequue -les stop the hooks 15b, 16b, when the rollers 15a, 16a, bear against the underside of said bars.
The support arms 15, 16 are rigidly joined to one another by a cross member 23, in the middle of which is mounted a threaded rod 24, capable of angular displacement but guarded against any longitudinal displacement; this rod carries, at its lower end, an operating button 24a. The rod 24 engages in a nut 25 provided with two lugs 25a perpendicular to the axis of the threaded rod 24.
The lugs 25a are hooked, via a

spring carrier 26, the rear ends of the two coil springs 17,18; the front ends of said springs, by means of hooks, grip the transverse rod 10.

The springs 17.? 18, are d3tel'i113s so ;. push the # rollers m, 16., with a good pressure ciJt # r .. # in. I against the lower faces of the bars 11, 12, when the chair is in the rest position, without load. The tension occurring, under these conditions, in the springs hardly changes.

when, by turning the threaded rod 2, the nut is moved along said rod.
In this rest position, the support arms 15, 16 form only a small angle (not exceeding 30) with the vertical; this position is indicated in figure 2 by solid lines. If a person takes a seat in a normal position, that is to say in an upright position, on the chair, the chair is maintained (provided that the prior tension of the springs 17, 18 is correctly adjusted) in the same position by the fact that the rollers 15a, 16a exert sufficient pressure on the bars 11, 12. This pressure can be rolled by turning the

operating button 24a, puiscdon thus changes the point of a:! 1pli- cation of the springs with respect to the center of rotation of the support arms 15, 16.
The correct tension is that which is just capable of maintaining the seat 13 in its resting (approximately horizontal) position, when the user is seated in an upright position.
When the latter leans in the center of the backrest, the pressure rises.
