<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ADJUSTABLE SPEED DRIVE WITHOUT STEPS.
The present invention relates to a stepless adjustable speed variator, consisting of two pulleys for V-belts, one of which is elastic and the other adjustable and in which the number of revolutions of the driven pulley can be adjusted. '' be adjusted without steps by influencing the setting of the adjustable pulley, while the distance from axis to axis between the two pulleys must not be changed and the V-belt always moves in exactly the same plane of revolution .
The elastic pulley for V-belts has, due to its exceptional construction, unlike all other elastic pulleys for V-belts, the great advantage that the mechanically controlled V-belt always moves exactly. in the same plane of revolution, although there is only one spring.
The elastic pulley for V-belt can also be used as a speed variator without the adjustable pulley, in this sense, the motor, to which the first is fixed, is moved by means of a slide and that in this way we change the distance from axis to axis between the driven pulley and the driving pulley. In this case, the driven fixed pulley can be provided with a V-belt groove, since the latter no longer moves axially.
If we now use the elastic pulley for V-belts as the driving pulley and the adjustable pulley for V-belts as the driven pulley, by changing the setting of the latter, it is possible to change the setting of the pulley. vary without steps the number of turns of the first, without having to change the distance from axis to axis between the two pulleys. The speed ratio compared to that of the variator discussed previously increases squared. Here too, the V-belt always remains in one and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
unique plan of revolution. The two pulleys can be mounted completely independent of each other with respect to the distance from axis to axis. In addition, they are suitable for V-belts, with horizontal as well as vertical movement.
The force required to change the number of revolutions is balanced by the pulleys themselves, so that the bearings of the driving element and the driven element are not subjected to any axial stress. Each of the two pulleys can be used both as a motor and as a driven.
In Figure 1, of the accompanying drawing, is shown in section an exemplary embodiment of a variable speed drive according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on line II-II of Figure 1.
The pulley designated by A is elastic and the pulley designated by B is the adjustable V-belt pulley.
The journal 1 of pulley A is located on the motor shaft and is wedged on it by means of a longitudinal key, while the two pulley halves 2. and 3; the contact surfaces of which for the belt are machined in the shape of a cone, can easily slide on said journal in the axial direction and between them. In tangential direction (direction of revolution) the pulley half 2. is connected to the journal 1 by four longitudinal keys, and the pulley half 3. is connected to the pulley half * by the longitudinal key The halves of pulley ? and 3 are pressed with the inner contact surfaces uniformly against the V-belt 7 by the pressure spring 5.
The pressure spring on its side rests against the pulley half 3. and against the protective screen 6, which is on the hub 20 of the pulley half 2. If the V-belt 7 now describes a small radius of revolution, either by a change in the distance between the axes of the driving pulley and that which is driven, or by a change in the setting of the counter-pulley, at both pulley halves and 3., the number of revolutions of the driven pulley is small, and conversely large. The specialty of the pulleys shown A and B is that the two pulley halves? and 3, controlled by lever 8, always center quite correctly on one and the same belt revolution plane 9.
This is done in a very simple way in that the lever, the center of which is fixed on the pivot 1 by means of the pivot 11, around which it can pivot in the axial direction of said pivot 1, engages in the holes drive 21, 22 of the pulley hubs 2. and 3., and causes the latter to move away respectively, always by the same distance with respect to the plane of revolution of the belt 9. For this purpose the lever is, relative to the wall thickness of the hub 20, and in relation to the axis of the pivto 1, slightly off-center. In other words, the 9 born belt revolution plane never moves over the full extent of the adjustment.
The driven pulley can therefore and provided that it is not constituted by the adjustable pulley B, be provided with a V-belt groove, since the belt no longer travels in the axial direction.
Another peculiarity of this driving pulley is that, notwithstanding the lateral displacement of the two pulley halves 2. and 3., there is only one pressure spring 5. This in order that the two halves pulley, 2. and 3 are constantly subjected to a pressure of equal value and that the V-belt 7, would remain in the same plane of revolution, even without being held there by the lever 8. The pressure is balanced thus automatically between the two pulley halves which have to transmit the engine torque. Thus the lever 8 is in no way requested and it only has a simple control function, respectively centering.
The construction of pulley B is exactly analogous to that of pulley A, however with the difference that the pulley halves 2 and 1, irrespective of the pressure of the belt, can be moved apart, respectively brought together. the other at any time and in an arbitrary manner by means of the handwheel 12. The handwheel 12 is wedged on the threaded rod 13 (straight pitch). When the handwheel is turned to the right, the threaded nozzle 19,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which is connected to the pulley half 1 via the radial bearing 16 and the blank 18, moves to the right. At the same time, the threaded rod 13, which is connected to the pulley half 2. via the axial bearing 17, moves, controlled by the lever 18, the same distance to the left.
The pressure balancing between the two pulley halves, which have to transmit the engine torque, here also takes place automatically. The bearings of the shaft, on which the pulley is wedged, here too are not stressed in the axial direction. Therefore, the lever is used here also only to center the two pulley halves 2¯ and
3, in the plane of revolution of belt 9, and said lever 1 is therefore not stressed in any way. The threaded nozzle 19 is prevented from rotating about its axis by the longitudinal key 14 and the stopper 15, which must be mounted on a fixed part; nevertheless it can move slightly in the latter, that is to say in the stopper 15.
By adjusting a graduated scale to the threaded nozzle 12 and an index to the stopper 15, the number of turns can be checked at any time. The pressure spring 5. is used in this pulley to unload the bearings 16 and 17.
By using pulley A as a driving force and pulley B as a driven pulley, or vice versa, the number of revolutions of the driven pulley can be varied in the ratio region 1:16, instead of 1: 4 as in the simple variator. If the V-belt describes a small radius of revolution to the driving pulley, then it describes a large radius of revolution to the driven pulley and vice versa. The elastic pulley A automatically keeps the V-belt taut at all times.
