<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
l'autre.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Gear shift mechanism.
The present invention relates to a speed change mechanism, intended primarily for use in combination with a device for variable speed drive by pulleys of the conical disc type, in which a pair of conical discs mounted on a shaft or axle. of rotation can transmit movement to a pair of similar conical discs mounted on another shaft or axis of rotation, by means of an endless belt clamped between each pair of conical discs, a variable speed thus being transmitted d '' one pair of discs to the other by reducing the spacing between the conical discs of one pair and simultaneously increasing the spacing between the conical discs of the other pair or vice versa,
the effective diameters of the belt passage
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
on the two pairs of conical discs can accordingly be changed relative to each other, and the driving speed of one pair of conical discs by the other can be changed in a corresponding manner, the axial translational displacement of the conical discs being effected by a translational displacement, in one direction or the other, of a chain engaged with chain wheel nuts provided respectively with a screw thread. right and left and coupled to the conical discs.
The object of the present invention is to provide means by which the movement of the chain, of a rack, or of an equivalent element, can be controlled with such precision that a progressively variable speed can be obtained. within the limits imposed by the device, that is to say any number of revolutions per minute or other unit of time, and this by a simple pressure on a push-button or by a slight angular displacement of a lever, and by maintaining these members in the control position until the necessary speed is indicated by a speedometer, these members then being released.
According to the present invention, an automatically centered reversing device is kinematically coupled with a rotating drive member by a lever or push-button control device, to obtain a translational movement of an element, for example. of an endless chain, in one direction or the other, in order to bring about the approximation or spacing of the conical discs of the pulleys, and for the actuation of a return member intended to automatically disengage the device when the element moved in translation reaches the end of its travel in one direction or the other,
any change of speed which can then be obtained only by moving the control lever in the direction

opposite or another pushbutton forming part of the button control device.
The automatically centered reversing device may include a friction plate driven in rotation by a suitable motor and placed between the two friction plates of a reversing member, which are normally held by springs in the middle or neutral position, with respect to to the plate actuated by the motor, and brought into contact with this plate on either side of its axis by a link and lever mechanism which can be actuated by an operating lever or push buttons. The operating lever or the pushbuttons can be incorporated into the assembly or placed outside it, at a remote control station.
The return device comprises a stop rigidly integral with the operating lever and having two inclined ramps which cooperate with two equally inclined ramps provided On two heels rotating with a helical wheel actuated by an endless screw integral with a shaft also carrying a chain sprocket engaged with this chain, this shaft being driven by a worm gear from the shaft which is itself driven in one direction or the other by the reversing device, the arrangement being such that, if the operator maintains pressure on the operating lever long enough to move the chain and the conical discs of the pulleys to one of the extreme positions,
the inclined ramp of one or the other of the two heels engages on one of the inclined ramps of the stop forming part of the operating lever and turns this lever to return the reversing member to the rest position , the axial displacement of the conical discs of the pulleys in an opposite direction being possible only when the chain and these conical discs reach one or the other of the extreme positions.

Fig. 1 is a front view of an embodiment of the gear change mechanism constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the gear change mechanism, taken in the direction of arrow 2 in FIG. 1.
Fig 3 is a plan view of the mechanism, taken in the direction of arrow 3 in fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a view of the mechanism taken in the direction of arrow 4 in FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a chain sprocket movable in circular translation and of an adjustment lever, for the axial adjustment of the conical discs of the speed change pulleys.
A denotes a friction drive plate having a tapered edge A1, which may be of rubber or other material suitable for the reliable transmission of driving force. In the example shown, the plate A is fixed on. a support disc A2 integral with the shaft A3 of a speed change motor A4, the shaft which pivots in bearings A5.
Tray A is mounted between two other trays B, also provided with conical edges B1, B2 and mounted on an inverter C which can be moved to bring one of the conical edges.
B1 or B2 in contact with the conical edge A1, the two plates B being however normally maintained in a middle or neutral position by two opposing springs D, D1.
In the arrangement shown, the reverser C is internally splined to slidably fit over external splines E of a sleeve E1 keyed or otherwise wedged on a screw shaft in the end F rotatably mounted in brackets. bearings

to form two shoulders E2 and E3 .. The spring D is interposed between a shoulder F2 of the shaft F and the shoulder E2, while the spring lA is interposed between the shoulder-c E3 and a washer G.
In the periphery of the reverser C is formed an annular groove C1 intended to receive a roller H which can be constituted by a ball bearing whose inner ring is fixed on an axis H1 integral with an arm H2 itself. attached to one end of an H3 shaft pivotally mounted in an H4 bearing. On the other end of this shaft H3 is fixed an arm H5 articulated in H6 at one end of a connecting rod H7, of which the opposite end in H one end of a connecting rod whose opposite end is articulated in H8 with a arm J1 forming part of a control lever which carries a cam, 110 intended to actuate a switch which itself forms part of the speed change motor A.
As indicated above, the lever! can be operated by hand or by pushbuttons: which may be incorporated into the assembly or placed outside it, and which are arranged so as to cause the lever to move.
This is fixed to one end of a pin J 2 pivotally mounted in a bearing J3. On the other end of this pin is fixed an arm L1 carrying a stop L having towards one end an inclined ramp L2 and towards the opposite end an inclined ramp L3. These inclined ramps are intended to cooperate respectively with two heels M, M1 having corresponding inclined ramps, and one of which protrudes on the inner side of a flange M2 provided on one face of a helical wheel N, while the The other protrudes on the inner side of a flange M3 provided on the other side of the helical wheel N. In the example shown, the two heels are angularly offset by 90 with respect to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the other.
The helical wheel N is actuated by an endless screw N1 fixed on the shaft F4.
To use the device, the operator maneuvers the control lever in one direction or the other, or presses one or the other of the push-buttons to bring one or the other of the plates. of the reverser in contact with the rotating drive plate. As a result, the chain is moved in translation in one direction or the other and brings the two conical discs of the pulieuivant in the direction of movement of the chain closer to or apart from one another.
The operator maintains the pressure on the lever or the push-button until the desired speed is indicated by the speedometer T, which can be incorporated into the assembly. The operator then ceases to exert pressure, and the reverser is returned by the two opposing springs to the middle position or neutral position, while the chain remains in the position to which it was brought.
If the operator maintains pressure on the lever or push button long enough to move the chain and the two taper discs to either extreme position, the heels will intervene as previously described.
The device can be placed horizontally, vertically, or in an inclined position.
It is completely safe from false maneuvers, and no damage can result from the fact that the lever or the push-button is operated while the device is or not under the control of the engine.
To allow the adjustment of the nuts forming chain wheels, with a view to the axial displacement of the conical discs of the speed change pulleys either for the initial adjustment, or for the correction of the wear of the belt, it is necessary to

provides a movable U pulley in circular translation, routed on an arm U1 integral with a shaft U2 able to rotate freely in bearings U3, and one end of which emerging from the device carries an arm U4 provided with an adjustable stop or an adjustment screw U5 intended to cooperate with a fixed stop.
A few U6 openings are made in the housing for the insertion of a hand tool which can be engaged with either link of the chain and which, when the chain is slack, makes it possible to separately rotating either of the chain wheel nuts on the drive shaft or the driven shaft to thereby produce a combined axial displacement of the taper discs.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it is possible to make modifications to the embodiment which has just been described.
