<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Regulator for projection lamp. with arc.
To maintain, in the lamps. arc, the crater of the positive carbon at a correct distance from the optical illumination device, the two coals must constantly, during the operation of the lamp, be brought together by a determined length corresponding to their wear. Automatic regulators are used so as not to have to carry out this movement by hand. These regulators can belong to two main categories: that where the speed of approach of the two coals remains constant and that where this speed can be modified during operation.
The approximation mechanisms belonging to the first category are constituted either by an electric motor, which acts by means of a transmission gear on the rods of the coals and whose number of turns can be regulated by means of a resistance, either by an electric motor or a clockwork mechanism which are however controlled by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a relay, which depends on either the voltage or the current of the arc.
These coals advance mechanisms have the following drawback: they cannot be kept constantly in service during the complete combustion of the coals because, especially when the latter are heavily loaded, their rate of wear is never reduced. constant, but they must be taken out of service from time to time, in which case the adjustment of the carbon brushes must be done manually. In the second category of reconciliation mechanism, the control is also performed by an electric motor. However, the advance of one of the coals, either the positive or the negative, can in addition be modified afterwards, which makes it possible to adapt the speed of approach to that of the wear of the coals.
Friction wheel gears, eccentric drives or the like are used for this purpose. The adjustment of the closing speed is carried out again electrically, by varying the number of revolutions of the engine.
Such an arrangement has the following drawback: when the speed of advance, not subsequently variable, of one of the coals must be modified, the other coal must simultaneously be moved. The electric control of the number of revolutions has, moreover, in the two categories of reconciliation devices, the drawback of being possible only within relatively narrow limits, because, at the same time as the number of revolutions of the engine, the moment of rotation of this decreases sharply and there is a danger that, for heavily charged lamps, the mechanism stops. However, it is often required, in one and the same lamp, to be able to burn at very different combustion rates, and therefore to vary the speed of the advance mechanism within widely spaced limits.
The invention relates to a regulator where a control of the closing speed is possible for the two coals separately. Use for each coal a regulator of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
kind, where the speed is adjustable, would be economically disadvantageous. In the object of the present invention, the independent control of the approach speed of each coal is done from a single gear and the construction is then greatly simplified., By the fact that one and the same member is used for independent control of the two carbons. This is made possible by the use of a single eccentric actuated by the control motor. This eccentric is of conical shape which makes it possible to obtain a continuous variation of the eccentricity.
The push bars, which transmit the advance movement to the rods of the coals, are moved separately along the conical eccentric. As a result, it is possible to vary the approach speed of each separated coal continuously from 0 to the maximum value,
The engine can then run at its most favorable speed - and despite this, the draw-up mechanism can be set to any speed and any combustion ratio. The draw-rods for the push bars are arranged coaxially. The best arrangement is thus achieved for simply coupling the two adjustment buttons, so that the forward speed can thus be varied simultaneously. of the two coal.
A section through an exemplary embodiment of the device is shown, in the drawing, in fig.l. Fig. 2 shows a plan view with partial sections. Figs. 3 and 4 show particularities of the device.
A conical eccentric 1 is, according to the invention, used as a member controlling the bringing together of the two carbons, it is actuated by a motor 2, via a worm 3 and a worm wheel 4 , during which the motor 2- is started automatically when the arc voltage has exceeded a determined value, that is to say when the wear of the carbons, one in relation to the other, has become too much big. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
worm wheel 4 and the conical eccentric 1 are fixed on a common axis, which is arranged in a part 6. Said part 6 also contains the pair of threaded pins 7, 8, at the ends of which are fixed the rotary knobs 9, 10. The threaded pins can rotate in the part 6 but cannot move axially.
The threaded spindle 8 is constituted by a tube and is placed on the axis 11 connected to the threaded spindle 7. On each of the spindles 7, 8 is disposed a spring housing 12, 13. These boxes 12, 13 are connected, of so as to be able to slide, to the part 6 via guides in the form of a dovetail. During the rotation of the threaded pins 7 or 8, the corresponding spring box 12 or 13 is moved onto the pin in question. Push bars 14, 15 are arranged in the boxes 12, 13 and can move there by overriding a spring. One of the ends of each of the bars carries a buffer 16, 17; these are placed against the outer surface of the conical eccentric 1. The other ends of these push bars carry pivots 18, 19 which fit into the lever arms 20, 21.
The latter are connected to stop couplings acting in one direction 22, 23, the movable part of which is joined to the pins 24, 25. The latter are further connected by means of toothed wheels 26, 27 with the rods. threads for the arc lamp carbon holders.
The device works as follows:
When the conical eccentric 1 is driven by the motor 2, the push bars 14, 15 each according to the position occupied by the buffers 16, 17, are pushed against the conical eccentric 1 by the value of the eccentricity and actuating through the couplings 22,23 the carbon rods.
The approximation to be carried out for each of the carbon rods is regulated by the fact that one moves, thanks to the buttons 9 and 10, the buffers 16, 17 around the periphery of the eccentric. It is thus possible to adjust separately, during operation, the advance of the carbon brushes from zero to the maximum value.

Figs. from 5 to 11 show a modified embodiment. This mechanism for bringing together the coals has the advantage of being able to be used universally, for many types of lamp.
The mechanism can, depending on the simple completion of certain construction groups, be employed for arc lamps with one or two rods, where also the position of these is taken into account. Another advantage is that that the reconciliation mechanism also comprises a device which allows, when it is used in an arc lamp with two rods, to be able to vary as follows: the choice, in a continuous manner, of the speed of advance of each of the different reconciliation rods . From the constructive point of view, they present a further advantage of simplicity in that the control members for the rods of the charcoal are arranged directly on the pins which serve. at setting at. hand stalks of coals.
The mechanism for bringing the coals together is shown in Figs. 5 to 13.

Fig. 13 shows the approximation mechanism when using a lamp with two rods, where these are not arranged axially to each other.
Two bearings 2, 3 are fixed so as to be able to turn in a housing frame 1. These bearings 2, 3 each carry a cam 4, 5, the mode of operation of which will be explained later. The bearing 2 is joined to a tube 6, which is provided at its end with a button 7. The bearing 3 is connected to a shaft 8 which passes through the bearing 2 and the tube 6 and. carries at its free end a button 9. A worm wheel
10 is arranged so as to be able to turn on the shaft 8; it carries the eccentric discs 11, 12 on the side flanges.
The bearing body 13 is furthermore fixed in the housing frame 1 and carries a support tube 15 which is fixed thereto by a screw 14. Two free-running catches, acting in reverse direction and secured against axial displacement by the stop devices 16 and 17 are arranged on the support tube 15. These snap-locks are made up of the parts 18, 19 which are arranged so as to be able to rotate directly on the support tube 15.
The stop disks 20 and 21 are fixed, so as to be able to turn, on these parts 18, 19 inside the housings 22, 23.
In the recesses 24 of the stop discs 20, 21 there are rollers or balls $ 25 which are subjected to the action of the springs
26. The boxes 22, 23 are provided with covers 27, 28 which are fixed to the parts 18, 19.
Push bars 29, 30 are attached to the housing cover 27, 28; their ends are within reach of the eccentric 11, 12 and of the cams 4, 5. The wheels 31 and 32 are fixed so as to be able to slide, by means of the screws 33, 34 on the parts 18, 19. Between the wheels 31, 32 are arranged, protected in cups 35, 36 of solid friction springs 37, 38, which constitute an excellent connection between the housings.
22, 23 and the toothed wheels 31, 32.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Spring boxes 39, 40 which house the pressure springs 41 or 42 are. still adapted to the frame 1, On each spring 41, 42 is a ball or a roller 43, 44.
These rollers or balls 43, 44 are arranged between the bars 45, 46 and a groove 47 or 48, which are formed on the perimeter of the housings 22, 23; said rollers or balls 43, 44 are located below the horizontal diameter of the housings 22, 23, so that they can fit between the bars 45, 46 and the housings 22, 23.
The spindle 49, rigidly connected to the wheel 32, rests in the support tube 15. The spindle 49 carries at its end the adjustment knob 50. The wheel 31 is connected to the tube-shaped spindle 51 and the latter has the adjustment knob at its end. 52.
The worm wheel 10 meshes with the worm 53 which is joined to the axis of. control motor 54. It should also be mentioned that the ends of the push bars are pushed back by a pressure spring 55 against the eccentrics 11, 12 or against the cams 4, 5.
The operating mode of the mechanism for bringing the coals together is as follows:
When the lamp is ignited, the motor 54 will start to rotate and move, via the worm 53, the wheel 10. The eccentrics 11 and 12 are thereby set in motion and make- pivoting the push bars 29, 30 whereby they move the housing covers 27, 28 by jerking. As a result of these displacements and of the free-running devices 20, 24, 25, 26, the housings 22, 23 are moved, during which these displacements are transmitted, as a result of the pressure of the funds of the housing against the part 18 or 19, by means of springs 37 or 38, on this part 18 or 19.
The wheels 31, 32 being rigidly connected to the part 18 or 19 by the intermediary of the screws 33, 34, are moved by jerking by the eccentric 11, 12.
To. avoid a return movement of the friction housings
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
during the. rearward displacement of the bars 29, 30 which are subjected to the springs 55, a stop device is provided.
The rollers or the balls 43, 44 make it impossible to move the friction housings 22, 23 backwards while they release the latter during the closing movement.
In order to be able to adjust the amount of approximation for each wheel 31 or 32, cams 4 and 5 are provided which can be operated from buttons 7 and 9 via pins 6, 8. Cams 4, 5 can, by the displacement of these pins, be brought more or less within reach of the push bars 29, 30 that is to say be more or less distant from the eccentrics 11, 12, whereby the stroke of the The eccentric acting on the bars 29, 30 can be changed.
The wheels 31 and 32 are connected by means of other wheels to the rods for bringing the coals 56 (see fig. 10-13) and thus transmit the movement to the supports 58 carrying the coals 57.
