<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

BAG WITH WINDOWS 'TRANSPARENT, AND ITS' PROCESS 'OF MANUFACTURING.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of paper bags or bags with transparent windows used in particular in the retail sale of products or foodstuffs, and its main object is a manufacturing process allowing the addition to a classic bag, bellows and ordinary bottom, that is to say with a single ply, with a transparent window extending over the entire height of this bag.
It is known that in the manufacture of conventional gusseted plain bottom paper bags, the continuous tube of paper, formed in the machine, is cut into lengths of suitable length and in a manner such as faces of the flattened paper tube has a part or protruding tab which is then simply folded and glued on the other face of the tube, this simple folding and gluing being sufficient to ensure the sealing of the bottom of the bag.
It is also known that the formation of the tab protruding from the bottom of the bag is obtained, in the machine working continuously, by the action of a beater member cooperating with two blades offset one by one relative to the another and having a sawtooth edge, each cutting having the effect of simultaneously producing both the protruding tab for closing a bag and the opening tab of the previous bag. This cutting means with the aid of sawtooth blades simultaneously makes it possible to obtain the indentation formed on the edges of the bag.
The simple addition of a continuous strip of transparent paper, such as a strip of paper known under the name of "cellophane", in the length of the tubing of paper intended for the formation of the bags, however no longer allows the cutting of this tube by the usual means indicated above. Indeed, by its nature, the cellophane material or other transparent plastic material, does not lend itself to cutting by the combined action of the beater and the sawtooth blades, this action inevitably giving rise to tearing or tearing. irregular cellophane.
Only a clean cut of the paper tube and the cellophane tape can prevent tearing of the cellophane, but in this case we

at the same time removes the protruding closing tab by simple fold, as well as the opening tab of the bag. As a result, in order to obtain the leaktight closure of the bottom of the bag, it becomes necessary to carry out a double folding of the bottom of the bag, resulting in slowing down in production and loss of material. In addition, the bag no longer presents its usual appearance with a serrated opening tab. Moreover, such a bottom bag formed by a double folding no longer offers the desirable stability when it is filled.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks by the fact that it makes it possible to make, by the conventional means described above, a bag, with gussets or the like, with a transparent window extending over the entire height of the latter, and having an ordinary single-ply bottom as well as the usual serrated opening tab.
For this purpose and according to the invention, the cutting or sawing of the cellophane material, at the same time as that of the paper of the bag by the usual means, is obtained without risk of tearing of the cellophane, thanks to the prior formation in the band formed by the latter, of a sawing primer occurring at the places where this band is called to be sawn by the action of the beater.
By way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view showing the cellophane strip intended to constitute the transparent window and provided with its sawing primer.
Fig. 2 shows a section of tube lined with its cellophane strip and cut to the desired length to form the bag.
Fig. 3, shows the bag after closing its bottom.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a fragment of a bag cut along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the bottom of a flattened bag, showing a variant of folding and gluing of this bottom of the bag.
- As shown in Fig. 1 the cellophane strip 6 intended to constitute the transparent window of the bag, has at regular intervals and over its entire width, a tearing or sawing primer 7 formed by a series of perforations arranged in teeth saw blade, corresponding to the saw teeth of the saw blade cooperating with the beater of the machine. This sawing initiation, which does not destroy the required resistance of the cellophane during the treatment of the latter in the machine, is carried out using any suitable perforating device.
According to the invention, the perforation 7 is preferably made during the unwinding of the cellophane strip during its insertion, by gluing, into the paper tube made by the machine working continuously. The perforator used for this purpose cooperates with a rubber bottom or roller and operates in perfect synchronism with the beater, so that the perforated line 7 is present exactly on the saw teeth of the saw blade at the precise moment when the rotary beater acts to produce the sawing, by conventional means, of the paper tube 8, provided with its longitudinal intermediate cellophane band, shown in FIG. 2.
This Fig. 2 shows that the section of tube 8 with cellophane tape 6 glued along the edges 8a of the paper 8, could be cut or sawn with the same sharpness as the neighboring paper constituting the remainder of the section 8, thanks to the presence sawing primer 7 which allowed sawing without tearing off the cellophane paper 6.
By this process it is therefore possible to cut the continuous cellophane strip tube, so as to obtain, as before, the section 8 having the projecting tab 9 and the serrated opening tab 10.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 3 shows that the protruding tab 9 can, as in the known manufacture, be simply folded over and glued to the other face of the flattened tube to seal the bottom of the bag in a sealed manner. This single ply watertight closure is shown more prominently in FIG. 4 in which the thicknesses of the paper 8 and the cellophane 6 have been greatly exaggerated for the sake of clarity.
It goes without saying that the bottom of the bag 8 could, still in accordance with the prior practice, be closed by a fold comprising the simultaneous folding of part of the other face of the tube, as shown in FIG. 5, so as to avoid any risk of the bottom of the bag leaking.
It can therefore be seen that the process according to the invention makes it possible to obtain the sachet 8 with a cellophane window 6 extending over the entire height of the sachet, the latter being cut and glued by conventional mechanical means, which does not had not been possible until now.
If the assembly of a cellophane window by the method described above finds its particular application to a gusseted bag, it must of course be understood, however, that it could be applied just as well to ordinary bags without gussets or of any other form that might be deemed useful. Likewise, the process described can be applied not only to the material known as “cellophane” but to any other synthetic or other transparent material.
