<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Carding machine.
The present invention relates to carding machines for cotton and other fibers.
According to the invention, a secondary introduction roller is disposed under the primary introduction roller, the secondary introduction roller having a smaller diameter and having a greater peripheral speed than the primary roller and being so disposed. so with respect to this and to the carding roll that it removes all or most of the fibers from the primary roll and delivers them to the carding roll.
The secondary intake roll is covered with a coating of metal wires similar to that of the primary roll, but preferably thinner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and will be described with reference to those drawings which show a longitudinal section of a sufficient part of a carding machine to make the invention understood.
In the drawing, A is the usual carding roll, the shaft of the carding roll, B the running covers, C the primary feed roller, D the feed plate and d the feed roller , parts which are all of a construction and arrangement usually known.
A secondary introduction roller E is mounted under the primary introduction rouldau C, in bearings carried in the side frames of the machine.
These bearings are preferably adjustable to allow adjustment of the roller in correlation with the primary roller C and the cylinder A.
The secondary introduction roll E is covered with a coating of metal wires e similar to: the coating c of the primary roll C, but preferably thinner than the latter.
Roll E has a smaller diameter than roll C and is rotated with greater surface speed than the latter roll. The two rollers C and E turn in the same direction but in the opposite direction to the rotation of the carding cylinder A. The threads e of the roller E therefore circulate in the opposite direction to that of the threads c of the roller C at the point where they touch.
The diameters and suitable rotational speeds of the primary feed roller C and the secondary feed roller E co-operating with a 50 3/4 "diameter carding cylinder, rotating at 160 revolutions per minute, are: roll C: 9 3/4 "in diameter, 400 revolutions per minute; roller E: 4 3/4 "in diameter, 1260 turns. It will be understood that these diameters and speeds are only given by way of example and that the invention is not limited to them.

Cleaning knives c1 are placed in the usual position under the primary introduction roller C and a housing C 1 carrying the grid bars c2 is extended: then the anterior cleaning knife c1 to a position close to from the periphery of the secondary feed roller E.
The cleaning knives e1 are arranged under the secondary introduction roller E substantially in the same relative position with respect to the latter, as the cleaning knife c1 with respect to the roller C and the space between the net knife. anterior toyeur e1 and the carding cylinder is covered by a curved metal casing E1 carrying transverse grid bars e.
A curved envelope G, bolted or otherwise fixed to the sides of the frame extends from the rear cleaning knife e to the envelope C1 under the primary introduction roller C and an additional piece G1, approximately triangular in shape, is disposed in the space formed between the two introduction rollers C and E and the carding cylinder A.
The fibers are supplied to the primary feed roll C in the usual way by the feed roll d and are transported in a circle by the roll C to the point where the latter meets the secondary feed roll E. The yarns e of the roll E, which move at this point in the opposite direction to the ± yarns of the C roll, then remove most of the fibers from the ± yarns and carry them in a circle past the casing G and the knives cleaners e1 up to the carding cylinder A, the coating of which removes them therefrom in the usual way.
All fibers not removed from the yarns c of the primary feed roll C by the yarns e of the secondary feed roll E are transported forward by the roll C to the carding cylinder A.
