"PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF DE FABRICATION DE VIROLES BOMBEES EN FORME DE TONNEAU CONVENANT NOTAMMENT POUR DES FUTS ME-
EMI1.1
TALLIQUES" .
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR MANUFACTURING BOMBED VIROLS IN THE SHAPE OF A BARREL SUITABLE IN PARTICULAR FOR ME- DRUMS
EMI1.1
TALLIQUES ".
Until now, the processes used to obtain a barrel-shaped hollow body have made use either of casting into an appropriate shape, or of assembling, by welding or gluing or otherwise, elements previously cut and bent to the shape oonvpnable, either to the expansion of a cylindrical shell by the sole application of a force internal to the shell, by mechanical or hydraulic means, or by means of an elastic body.
The present invention consists in obtaining a domed hollow body in the shape of a barrel from a tubular body by the combined action of an axial force tending to cause buckling of the wall and an internal force to discipline the deformation in such a way. that this gives the hollow body the desired convex shape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to a special embodiment of the invention, the convex hollow body is obtained from a tubular body with a thin wall whose ratio between the length and the average diameter remains below the limit at which occurs. a buckling of the whole.
According to a complementary feature of the invention, the deformation is limited by the use of an external stopper produced, for example, by means of a rigid shell.
Another feature of the invention consists in applying the axial force to at least one side by means of an annular part allowing the passage of a member for implementing the internal force.
The invention also relates to products of a commercial or industrial nature obtained by means of tubular bodies treated as indicated and in particular to convex shells and 2. (metal drums.
The drawings attached to this memory illustrate by way of non-limiting example certain details of the invention.
This extends to the various original features shown in these drawings or mentioned in the following description relating thereto.
In these drawings: FIG. 1 represents a tubular body with a thin wall before the treatment, FIG. 2 shows the deformations that this body could take under the application of an applied axial force. FIG. 3 shows how these deformations can be disciplined by the application of an inner effort, '
1a FIG. 4 represents a device making it possible to apply simultaneously the axial force and the internal force tou @ by limiting the deformations by a rigid shell,
In this figure,
the tubular body is shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in phantom lines. FIG. 5 represents the device after obtaining the convex shape, FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 represent drums -ietalli 'c obtained by means of convex shell casing.
The theory, confirmed by practical tests, shows that the force necessary to cause deformation by buckling of the walls of a cylindrical hollow body with a thin wall is, in the majority of cases, appreciably less than the sum of the elementary forces which 'it is necessary to apply to the walls of the shell from the inside to cause the same deformation by simple expansion.
On the other hand, the expansion force which is necessary in the process according to the invention, to guide the deformation is also much less than the same force to be applied in the process by simple expansion. As a result, the set of two forces to be applied according to the invention remains lower than the kings forces involved in the methods known to date and that an economy of effort can thus be achieved. In addition, the member responsible for ensuring the lateral transmission of the expansion forces in the process according to the invention is made considerably more resistant to wear or deterioration.
A particular aspect of the invention results from the following consideration. Under the effect of the compression due to the buckling load applied to the edges and directed along the axis of the cylindrical hollow body, each elementary portion of the wall undergoes a shortening in the direction of the force applied. Corresponding to this shortening are increases in dimension in the circumferential direction and in the radial direction, that is to say according to the thickness of the wall. This tendency to increase in thickness partly compensates for the thinning of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
wall caused by nirconferential elongation.
It follows that for an equivalent thinning of the wall, the process according to the invention will allow a more accentuated diameter swelling than that obtained by any other process bench on the simple expansion by the action of internal forces 1a said. ferrule. As a corollary, equivalent bending will correspond to less thinning of the wall of the hollow body.
It goes without saying that, according to additional features of the invention, the axial force applied at the end of the shell may be exerted either mechanically, for example, using a screw press, with eccentric, with cams, cranks or kneepads, either pneumatically by plates driven by a compressed gas, so-hydraulically, for example, by a single-acting or multiple-effect hydraulic press. These examples are not limiting.
Likewise, the force inside the shell in a direction perpendicular to the walls of the hollow body can be exerted by any articulated mechanical device, pneumatic or hydraulic or by means of an elastic body (for example, rubber). suitably compressed capable of resisting inward deformation of the buckling wall and accompanying its outward movement. By way of nonlimiting example, a remarkably simple and inexpensive device implementing the present invention is described below.
The device is intended to be mounted on a double-acting hydraulic press consisting essentially of a fixed plate 1 opposite to a piston 2 surrounded by a table 1a, movable towards the fixed plate 1 independently of one another and simultaneously.
It will appear from its description that the device can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
be mounted on any other mechanically or pneumatically actuated machine having the same characteristics.
The device comprises two half-shells A and A1 hereinafter referred to as A and A1 shells (Figures 4 and 5). They are hollowed out so as to form by their superposition a
Hollow corresponding to the shape to be obtained. In the bottom of the shells are formed in a and b recesses which will receive the shell to be deformed and will exert, by bringing the shells together, a force at the end on the shell called "buckling force"; The internal height obtained by the The superposition of the shells remains less than the height of the convex screw and a fortiori the height of the latter before bending.The shell A is at full bottom.
At the lower part of the shell Al is formed a cylindrical opening of suitable diameter and height to receive a punch B surmounted by a solid cylinder 0 consisting of a mass of an elastic body such as, for example , rubber, or formed by the superposition of washers of the same material. The washers can be held in position by interlocking or by appropriate guidance.
The shells A and Al are respectively fixed on the fixed plate 1 and the movable table 1a of the hydraulic press, while the punch B and the solid cylinder C are made integral with the central piston 2 of the press. The strokes of the movable table and of the central piston are adjusted to remove the shells and erase the cylinder C according to figure 4 of the appended drawing, in order to allow the easy introduction of the ferrule shown in figure 1 and shown in lines. mixed in Figure 4.
The bringing together of the fixed plate 1 and of the movable table 1a and, consequently, of the two shells A and A1 will exert on the shell the buckling force directed along the axis of the hollow body and applied to its edges during any
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the duration of the operation. Simultaneously, the bringing together of the fixed plate and the central piston will provide by compression of the elastic cylinder C the energy necessary to discipline the deformations due to buckling and direct them in the desired direction. Separate settings allow the forces exerted by the shells A and A1 and by the elastic body C.
The entry into contact of the deformed hollow body with the inner walls of the shells, which constitutes the end of the operation (figure 5) will be marked by a sudden increase in the forces required, an increase which, through the intervention of appropriate organs, will trigger the stop of the movement of the press.
The return to the rear of the table 1a and of the central piston 2, by separating the shells A and Al and leaving the elastic body C the ability to resume its original dimensions and to disappear, will allow the easy extraction of the convex hollow body and the placement of a new ferrule.
It immediately appears that the device described above has the following advantages
1 - great simplicity of construction
2 - absence of articulated members subject to wear and expensive construction
3 - absence of liquid or gas tight joints, unpredictable efficiency and expensive construction and maintenance
4 - great ease and speed of maneuvers.
The process according to the invention claimed in this specification can be applied to the manufacture of barrel-shaped domed metal drums or the like.
The fû5 will consist of a domed barrel-shaped shell according to the method described and assembled by electric or autogenous welding, or by crimping or any other
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
known method, with two circular bottoms of suitable shape; the whole will be provided with the usual openings for this kind of article.
This barrel is illustrated schematically by the figures
6, 7 and 8 of the accompanying drawings, respectively showing a shank with recessed and welded ends, a shank with crimped ends and a shank with ends welded end to end to the shell.
The shell to be bulged can be obtained from a suitably corrugated sheet and assembled according to a generator by any process ensuring sufficient strength and sealing of the joint.
This convex barrel presents the following simultaneous advantages on rats with smooth, molded or fluted cylindrical bodies:
1 - increased resistance of the body to deformation
2 - greater ease of cleaning by any manual or automatic means
3 - great ease of handling, especially for heavily loaded drums.
