2. Buffer obtained by the process according to claim 1.
3. Method according to claim 1, characterized in that water vapor is sent on the concave smooth surface during the rotation.
4. Method according to claim 3, characterized in that after having rounded the end of the tampon, the tampon is completely extracted from its envelope.
From Swiss patent No. 608185 a method of manufacturing a cellulose or cotton pad is known, in which a continuous cellulose or cotton wick is formed, this wick is surrounded by a thermoplastic envelope formed by extrusion, a lubricated surface is formed on the wick and / or on the interior surface of the casing by the addition of a lubricating agent, the coated wick is cooled and cut.
The pad obtained by this process has at its ends edges corresponding to the edges of a cylinder. These ridges can present a drawback, especially in the case of a hygienic tampon where the ridge can cause injury or at least irritation. In this case, it would be wise to have a rounded tip pad. A rounded end may also be useful or even necessary in the case of ink pads, makeup pads, varnishes, etc.
The object of the present invention is precisely to obtain a buffer with a rounded end.
The subject of the invention is a process for manufacturing a cellulose or cotton tampon as described by Swiss Patent No. 608185, characterized in that one end of the tampon is brought out of its envelope and this end is rounded off into the applying axially against a smooth concave metal surface by causing it to rotate resting against this surface and relatively to this surface.
By this process the end of the tampon is not only rounded, but, due to the compression, the density of the tampon is increased, more particularly at its end. In the case of a hygienic tampon this has the effect of increasing the absorbency of the tampon.
The concave smooth metal surface is preferably lubricated with water vapor so as to avoid excessive heating by friction.
A subject of the invention is also a tampon obtained by this process.
The appended drawing represents an example of implementation of the method according to the invention.
Figs. 1 to 6 respectively represent six successive phases of the process.
The device used consists essentially of a fixed metal sleeve 13 having a bore 14 with a polished wall present as a narrowed part 15 forming a shoulder 16. At its lower part, the sleeve 13 has a circular battue 17 intended to fit onto a projection 18 of conjugate shape of a matrix 19 (Figs. 3 and 4) bearing a concave imprint 20, annular in shape and polished. The matrix 19, of round or square shape is fixed to an enclosure 21 made of synthetic material integral with a movable arm, not shown and having in its upper part, under the matrix 19, an opening 22 and, laterally, a tip 23. for the introduction of water vapor into the chamber 21.
The footprint 20 of the matrix 19 communicates with the interior of the enclosure 21 via several channels 24.
The procedure is as follows: the cellulose tampon 12, for example a hygienic tampon, in its tubular envelope of extruded material, for example polyethylene, obtained as described in patent No. 608 185, is introduced freely into the bore 14 of the socket 13 (fig. 1). It is pushed along the arrow Fl in this bore by a pusher 26 until it abuts against the shoulder 16 (FIG. 2).
The die 19 is then brought in front of the end of the sleeve 13 and engaged in the end of this sleeve (fig. 3). A piston 27 integral with a rod 28 and with a diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the casing 25 is then applied against the upper end of the plug 12. This piston 27 has on its active face a transverse rib 29 which could also be a cross-shaped rib. The piston 27 is first of all actuated axially in the direction indicated by the arrow F2 so as to cause a certain part 12a of the plug 12 to come out of its casing 25. The diameter of the bore 15 is substantially equal to the diameter of the plug 12. Immediately after the thrust along F2 or simultaneously with this thrust, the piston 27 is driven in rotation along the arrow F3, the pressure along F2 being maintained.
During this rotational movement, the piston 27 drives the pad 12 in rotation via its rib 29. The casing 25 of the pad is or is not driven in rotation, this being of no importance.
Simultaneously with this rotation, water vapor is injected into the enclosure 21. This vapor passes through the channels 24 and lubricates the cavity 20 and the bore 15, facilitating the rotation in sliding contact of the pad against the surface of the pad. the recess 20 and that of the bore 15.
The steam also has the effect of preventing too much heating of the cellulose by rubbing against the metal surfaces. It in fact maintains the metal parts at a temperature of about 1000 C. During its rotation under pressure, the end 12a of the plug is rounded taking the shape of the indentation 1. This end is also compressed radially so as its density increases. The entire buffer 12 is also compressed during this operation and sees its density increase.
The piston 27 is then withdrawn along F4 and simultaneously the enclosure 21 is driven downward along F5 and spaced laterally from the axis of the sleeve 13 (FIG. 5).
The tampon 12 is then thrown completely out of its envelope 25 by means of a piston 30 actuated by a pneumatic cylinder 30 'in the direction of arrow F6 (FIG. 5).
In the end, all that remains in the socket is the casing 25 (fig. 6).
The end of the casing 25 protruding from the sleeve 13 is gripped between two jaws 31 and 32 with a clamp which more or less closes the end 25a then moves away. The casing 25 is then driven out of the sleeve 13 in direction F7 by a jet of compressed air 33, the tightened part 25a of the casing creating the grip necessary for this extraction.
It can be seen that the extruded casing 25 is only used here for the manufacture of the tampon, and not as a packaging means. The envelopes constitute a recoverable waste directly reusable for the extrusion to a great extent.
Many variations are possible, especially with regard to the shape of the die, the materials used and the movement of the tools. It is in particular not essential to lubricate the metal surfaces by means of water vapor, but this lubrication is recommended. As regards the movement of the tools, it is obvious to a person skilled in the art that one
can move the sleeve 13 in front of the various tools to move from one working position to the next, or, which will generally be the case, machine several bores 14 in the support of a transfer machine with rotary or rectilinear motion. Furthermore, in principle it would also be possible to rotate the die while keeping the buffer angularly fixed.
