<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Oil burner.
The invention relates to a static oil burner, suitable to be adapted to any kind of fireplace, central heating boiler, etc., and operating by the draft of the fireplace of the fireplace to which it is adapted; the same static burner can be combined with a motor-fan unit, used to deal with the lack of draft of the chimney by increasing the draft of said burner. according to the present invention, the burner consists essentially of a combustion chamber in which is disposed an oil gasifier surmounted by a deflector. The gazéifica. teur is supplied by an oil supply duct surrounded by an air blowing nozzle. This nozzle opens into the combustion chamber, around the gasifier.
According to a particular feature of the invention, the combustion chamber is composed of three distinct parts made of refractory material or other non-combustible material resistant to high temperatures. These parts are made up below, of a part @

annular forming a support and pierced on one side with an opening for the pa.ssage of the nozzle and the fuel oil supply duct. This first part is intended to rest on the grate of the fireplace to which the burner is applied.
On this annular part is placed a circular deflector comprising a narrowing of section followed by an expansion and on this deflector is placed a convex box also circular pierced with oblique openings allowing the passage with flames *
According to a feature of the invention, the fuel oil gasifier is formed of an inverted cone in which is placed a ma, sse of absorbent and incombustible material in which is my tee the end of the fuel oil supply tube, pierced small holes allowing the gasifier to be supplied with fuel oil or fuel oil.
According to another feature of the invention, the nozzle arranged horizontally in the hearth ends in a diffuser cone inside which the gasifier is mounted. this diffuser cone opens into the combustion chamber at the base of the part constituting the deflector.
According to yet another feature of the invention, the oil burner is combined with a device allowing it to operate under two modes, either in normal operation or at idle speed, as explained below.
Other details and features of the invention will become apparent in the course of the. description of the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, various embodiments of the invention.

Fig. 2 shows the constituent elements of the combustion chamber of this burner.
Figs. 3 to 8 show various embodiments of the gasifier forming part of the burner.
Figs. 9 to 14 relate to various details.
The same elements are represented in the various figures by the same reference numerals.
In Fig. 1, in the hearth of a boiler 2, on the grid 3 is arranged an oil combustion chamber. This combustion chamber is made up of an annular part 4 forming a support for a second part 5 called a secondary deflector, also circular and comprising a narrowing of section followed by an expansion. On this secondary deflector is placed a rounded circular cap 6 or of semi-elliptical section pierced with oblique radial openings 7 allowing the passage of the flames.
The purpose of the secondary deflector is to increase the speed of the air as it passes through the gasifier. The secondary deflector also forms a mixing chamber. The three parts 4, 5 and 6 forming the combustion chamber are shown separately in Fig. 2. The annular part 4 is drilled on the side of an opening 8 for the passage of a nozzle which is discussed below. In the event that the secondary deflector 6 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 could not be used due to the narrowness of the hearth (case of small boilers), it is replaced by a secondary deflector mounted directly on a main deflector as explained in the description which follows. The shape of the secondary baffle can be changed while achieving the same purpose.
In the combustion chamber (4, 5, 6) is mounted a gasifier, fuel oil generator. This gasifier consists of an inverted cone 9 mounted on the end of a vertical duct 11 pierced with small holes 10 which allows the supply of said gasifier with oil.

combustible.
The free space between the tabe 11 and the walls of the cone 9 is filled with an absorbent and incombustible material 12 intended to increase the capillary demand of the gasifier. The gasifier is supplied with fuel oil by the tube II connected by the pipe 13 to a reservoir (not shown) so that the supply is by gravity and in a continuous manner, regulated by a level control device, for example. a float system keeping the zero fuel level constant. A nozzle 14 is mounted around the duct 13 and the gas-elector, at one end of which is mounted a fan motor unit 15 and the other end of which,
around the gasifier, ends with a diffuser cone 16 which leaves an empty annular space around the gasifier allowing the passage of the air sucked in by the chimney draft and the passage of the air delivered by the gasifier. the fan while it is running.
A main deflector 17 in the form of an inverted truncated cone is mounted on the gasifier 9. This circular deflector is pierced in its center with a notch 18 allowing it to be fixed at the center of the gasifier on the tube 11.
Two embodiments of this deflector are shown schematically in Figs. 9 and 10.
The deflector allows the diffusion of gases whatever its external forms, It can also include a flange extending above the gasifier. In order to lengthen the path of the air and the gases and thus promote their mixing. at the entrance to the combustion chamber. The deflector is made of mets!, Refractory material or any other non-combustible solid material, resistant to high temperatures.
As shown in, FIG. 1, the nozzle 14 is mounted in the front face of the boiler in a closure plate 19 at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
above the usual ashtray door 20 of the boilers. Outside the boiler, the nozzle 14 has a viewing window or opening 21 closed by a small hatch sliding in guides.
This opening is used for the introduction of the ignition device which consists of a fire rod shown diagrammatically in Fig. 13 and composed of a large flexible metal wire 22 carrying at one end a handle 23 and at the other end a small cylinder of incombustible absorbent material 24 which is imbibed with fuel oil, which is ignited and which is introduced through the small hatch and opening 21, with a view to igniting the fuel oil in the gasifier.
This ignition is only necessary once, the burner then being continuously on, either normal or slowed down.
Fig. 14 shows, seen in plan, the top of the outer end of the nozzle 14- with the opening 21 (Fig.l) closed by a small sliding hatch for this ignition.
In Fig. 1, there is shown schematically a box containing automatic devices of a known type which ensure the operation of the burner according to the invention in an automatic manner.
The device is designed to operate at two speeds: normal speed and idle speed. For this purpose, the burner is fitted with an electrically controlled valve, via a thermostatic switch, adjustable to the desired temperature. This valve comprises a needle driven by an electromagnet. This electromagnet is connected in series with the thermostatic switch and in parallel with the motor controlling the fan. The thermostatic switch may be of the mercury switch type, or of the platinum screw switch type.
The valve is lined with a bypass, allowing fuel oil to feed the gasifier when said valve is closed and the engine stopped. In normal operation, that is to say at high heat output, the breaker of the thermostat is closed, the needle of the valve raised by means of the electromagnet, the fan
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
works and sends air into the nozzle. In slow mode, the valve so closed, the by-pass alone @ operates, letting a small quantity of fuel oil pass to the gasifier.
The thermostatic switch is enclosed in a box fixed to the outgoing line; it is of the bi-metallic type or of the plunger type.
The oil tank, of whatever kind, is connected to the inlet of the magnetic valve by a flexible copper pipe, comprising a valve followed by a filter. This tank is fixed to height adjustable support feet.
Other automatic devices of a known type can be used in combination with the burner according to the invention.
The fan motor group 15 is supported by one or more feet 26 adjustable in height, so as to ensure the horizontality of the nozzle 14. At the front end of the fan motor group is mounted an adjustable damper 27 allowing the adjustment of the quantity of air blown in by the fan and to obtain complete combustion without smoke of the fuel oil. Other air control methods can also be used.
Figs. 3 to 8 8 represent variants of the embodiment of the gasifier proper, constituted by the inverted cone 9 (Fig.l) mounted at the perforated end of the tube 11.
Fig. 3, this cone 9 comprises inside, for example assembled by welding, an open cylinder 28 and a concentric ring 29, serving to increase the gasification surface. The free space between the open cylinder 28 and the tube 11 as well as the free space above the ring 29 is filled with absorbent and incombustible material, while the space between the cylinder 28 and the cone 9 is preferably filled with a non-combustible material which is very good conductor of heat 30.
Fig. 4 is an embodiment similar to Fig.l,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in which the cone 9 is surmounted by a cylindrical part 31 connected to the cone by means of a concentric ring 32.
All the free space between the tube 11 and the outer wall of the cylinder-conical gasifier is filled with absorbent and incombustible material 12.
Fig. 5, the gasifier is shown in an embodiment similar to that of FIG. 3. The concentric ring 29 of FIG. 3, however, being folded at 33 in order to increase the evaporation surface, without increasing the diametral dimension of the gasifier. This ring can also be made in the form of a spiral tube or groove or other similar means.
The outer cone 9 of the gasifier is fixed to the tube 11, but it preferably comprises small seats 34 (Fig. 5) on the outside, intended to rest inside the cone 16 of the nozzle 14 (Fig.l ) so as to ensure the perfect stability and centering of the gasifier and nozzle cone assembly.
Fig. 6, there is shown an embodiment of the gasifier intended to prevent any flow of liquid fuel oil in the nozzle or in the boiler, at the time of starting, that is to say the ignition of the burner. . According to this arrangement, a free space 35 is maintained between the outer cone 9 and an inner chamber 36 mounted on the tube 11 and filled with non-combustible absorbent material 12 as in the other examples.
The excess liquid fuel oil flows into this space and is evacuated via a conduit 37 connected to the automatic regulating device which temporarily closes the fuel oil inlet. Another similar arrangement achieving the same object can be used.
Figs. 7 and 8 are shown by way of example a burner according to the invention in which the gasifier 38 containing non-combustible absorbent material is mounted on the tube 11 and takes the form of a pocket, surrounded by the cone 16 of the pipe. -
