<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Method and apparatus for gluing, softening or softening and finishing threads and yarns of all kinds".
The object of the present invention is a process for gluing, softening or softening and dyeing in a water-soluble fugal color yarns and yarns of all kinds and especially those of rayon while simplifying the necessary handling to a minimum and obtaining practical and technical results superior to any that have been obtained with other systems applied so far.
It is known that in order to size or soften the threads, one employs: generally the system consisting in passing these threads through an aqueous bath of the sizing or softening substance such as gelatin, dextrin, starch, tallow or other materials suitable for this result, this aqueous bath being generally constituted by a very

An absorbent substance of suitable porosity constitutes a wick of felt partially immersed in the bath and fed by absorption or emptiness, and to pass the individual yarn or the bundle or the web of yarns in contact with it. the upper part of this absorbent substance,
so that the threads are covered with a layer or screed of the sizing substance which dries at room temperature and only slows down a minimum proportion of moisture. At the same time, the pressure or friction that the bit itself exerts on the yarn produces an action of draining and wiping or combing the yarn which improves its quality by relieving it in part of the flock it may contain and by ensuring the junction of the insulated fibers of the wire itself. In the remainder of this description, this absorbent substance is, for the sake of simplicity, called a "wick".
In this way, avoiding direct immersion of the wire in. the aqueous bath and, moreover, by incorporating the sizing substance only through a minimum quantity of water which does not manage to wet the yarn excessively, the latter evaporates naturally since there is no no excess water which must then be removed by drying.
When it comes to the treatment of individual threads, it is preferable and convenient to make a small slit or notch in the outer edge of the felt wick through which the thread is passed, so that it remains completely surrounded. by the impregnation felt. As the amount of sizing product applied to the yarn is very small and almost free from moisture, the drying is instantaneous, and the small amount of moisture absorbed disappears by itself, so that the yarn can be envied immediately on a reel, a boninot
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cylindrical or conical, a rod or a receiving beam.
So that the results indicated above can be obtained, the baths must be prepared according to. a greater or lesser concentration at the point of view of the sizing or softening materials which go into their composition depending on the absorbent material 'chosen for the work and it can be specified in general that the more the absorbent power is great, the more it is necessary to use highly concentrated baths,
the essential condition for obtaining the results indicated being that the bath used contains the smallest possible quantity of water and that this bath is sufficiently fluid at the normal temperature which prevails in the workshop to rise through the material absorbent chosen.
This result can be obtained more easily by adding a humidifying product capable of reducing the surface tension such as alcohol or its equivalent and, moreover, by slightly heating the bath.
The quantity of water which should be used in the bath is determined by the effect it produces on the yarn, taking into account the fact that the yarns wound in superimposed layers more or less finished have the property of being transmitted. the moisture which they contain, so that as the outer stumps which are in contact with the air lose their moisture, they absorb that of the inner layers and that ultimately the hygrometric degrees of all the layers equalizing.
This allows the threads to be wound directly onto reels, spools or other supports although, at the moment of the winding, these threads contain a certain quantity of moisture, the bath being adjusted so that after its winding the yarn maintains a hygrometric degree such that the humidity disappears without causing substantial deformation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The apparatus which is suitable for carrying out this new process and which is also employed by the invention comprises a tank intended to contain the glue bath, - ge having the indicated concentration and a felt wick or of an equivalent material partially immersed in the liquid and which also partially protrudes outside.
Absorbent material may vary as required; it is constituted, preferably, by a planar wick or with a rectangular section, its length or its contact surface varying according to whether it is a question of gluing a single wire or a bundle of wires. wick can be mounted, preferably, in a movable wick holder in order to be able to modify the edge of the surface of the wick which is in contact with the threads in the event that for some reason the bath should dry on the surface. free surface of the bit, for example when the work ends at the end of the day.
This result can be obtained by means of a support making it possible to invert the wick or to immerse it completely in a bath when it is not in use or still by means of a rotating support designed to modify intermittently the contact surface.
To glue individual threads, the wick may have a circular shape or the shape of a disc rotating about an axis; it preferably has one or more transverse peripheral notches, the wire passing in a direction transverse to the disc or parallel to the axis and inside one of these notches.
If the outer part of the wick dries out, the disc can be rotated equal to a fraction of a turn, leaving outside a part of this wick which was submerged, while the dry part, leveled in the liquid and again acquires the qualities of porosity which are necessary for it.

The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises a tank 1 of cylindrical shape but which may have any other suitable shape, arranged horizontally and provided with a pipe making it possible to fill this tank with a concentrated solution of a sizing substance. At its upper part, the tray 1 has a longitudinal notch 3 which can be covered with a cover 1. of suitable shape which carries. inside two tabs 5 intended to support between. they a felt disc 6 which can rotate around an axis 7.
At one of the faces of this felt disc 6 is aooauplée a small toothed wheel 8. with which can mesh a small pinion 9 integral with a small axis 10 mounted: in the cover 4 and protruding outside to end by a knurled knob 11 by means of which this felt disc can be rotated as required. On its periphery, this felt disc 6 has one or more radial notches 12. By having a. from these to its upper part, the wire 13 which comes from a supply spool 14 and which is suitably led by a wire guide 15 to be wound on a spool 16 is passed through it.
For the application of the sizing material, there is no need for cumbersome apparatus or mechanisms. As one will see, one device of reduced dimensions is sufficient for each wire.
The impregnation of son grouped in skeins, ribbons or sheets can take place before or after winding the yarn on the receiving beam, that is to say at the entry or exit of the drum of the 'warping machine, for example. during the operation corresponding to the unwinding of bobbins in the warping machine serving for the formation of a bundle winding on the drum or even during
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the unwinding operation of the various beams from this drum with a view to their winding on the beam as well as when the son unwind from one beam to wind on another. All this considerably facilitates the operation of gluing the threads and makes it possible to obtain speeds or
yields not yet achieved until now. The sizing system, object of the invention, can moreover be applied at any stage of the spinning from the start of the formation of the yarn until the moment when the fabric is formed,
An example of these applications is shown in figs. 4 and 5. In fig. 4 is shown a tray 17 of sufficient length provided with a wick 18 and disposed above a suitable support 19 between the unwinding drum 20 and the hauling beam 21.
The threads 22 unwind from the drum 20 and pass over a roller (the guide they brush against the wick 18 to go directly to the beam 21; they are then already impregnated and able to be used immediately. .
In fig. 5 is shown at 24 a beam beam, the body of which is covered with a sheet of son 25 which will wind on a receiving beam 26 also provided with cheeks. Between these two beams is placed a device similar to that described above and constituted by an elongated 2V tank provided with an upright wick 28 with the upper edge of which the threads pass in contact.
Thanks to these characteristics, we obtain this enormous advantage of being able to carry out the gluing of the wire in the cleaning machines or unwinding machines from which the skeins or layers of threads emerge by interposing a device similar to that which is described in fig. 3 on the path traveled by the wires from the Sharing point to their winding on the spools, mouli-,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
nets or other supports, all this process being carried out on the current machines which one employs for the unwinding of the son.
The application of this process or system to conventional unwinding machines can also be carried out in a general manner to the whole machine with its canopy. longitudinal direction a tubular container on each side to cover the entire length of the machine, this container being fed from one of its ends by means of a constant-level tank. The piping provided has in its entire length and parallel to the reels or winding reels a series of holes made precisely at the places where the wire must pass.
It is in these openings that the felt is introduced which must protrude slightly and which is mounted in any suitable manner as indicated above. dominated in general the unwinding machines are double-sided, that is to say have two series of hanger carriers which allow to operate the un-emptying on "cnemins of threads" from spools Blasé at the rate of one on each side, these machines can also be combined with the arrangement with single central piping, each of the felt wicks being provided with two parallel notches, the threads being arranged so that those of the skein of dr , oitese unwind on the spools placed on the left and vice versa,
o that is to say by crossing in the central part where the gluing wicks are located; which further simplifies the installation.
The characteristic of this system which allows it to be applied to all the existing machines mentioned above without modifying their normal production yields or requiring additional labor and the use of water as a solvent ensures an imparting advantage. from an economic and present point of view, moreover

this great advantage of not requiring large spaces or special premises to house the apparatus for gluing or smoothing the threads as is common practice at the present time.
The bath is prepared according to the porosity of the felt lock and according to the quality of the category of fibers or yarns to be treated. Thus, for example, if the felt makes it possible to absorb a bath prepared starting from sodium sulforicinate at 50% aqueous concentration constituting the base material and if one. passes the wire in contact with about 10 mm.
of wick at an approximate speed of 100 meters per minute as is customary in conventional unwinding machines, a load of about 20% of softening material is obtained and since this material must contain about 50% of In the event of humidity, the yarn ultimately changes only by 10% humidity and this was eliminated by itself without requiring any special drying.
If you want to color the yarn, especially if it is intended for twisting yarn (crepe), any fugitive color soluble in water is dissolved in the sulforioinate and a perfect color distribution is obtained with a result technically much better than that obtained by the systems currently used and in which the distribution of the color and of the softening or softening product is very irregular.
If gold. wants to give the yarn the Consistency of a very strong glued yarn suitable for use as a weaving warp, we dissolve; in the sulforicinate a certain quantity - The gela bine or glue but in a form such that the viscosity of the bath thus prepared is not itself such as to prevent it from rising by capillarity in the wick or the felt adopé for this job. in addition to sulforicinates, any other kind of soluble softening or softening materials can be used

in 1 '' and bringing together the same characteristics.
Likewise, it is possible to use as sizing materials not only glue, but mixtures into which glycerin, gum arabic, etc. enter.
Care should be taken to avoid as much as possible any tension on the wire and any formation of pronounced welds during its winding.
It is preferable to always work with the yarn supply system says 1! on the run "when it comes to rayon which is the fiber most sensitive to humidity, the yarn being subjected to a tension. Finally, as can be seen, it is possible without any change to the device , to vary the clergy of the wire by increasing or decreasing the speed and by changing the level of the liquid feeder.
