<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Household disc grater
Existing disk rasps consist of a magazine open at both ends, carried by a frame provided with means enabling it to be fixed to the edge of a table, for example, and carrying the axis of rotation in a rotating manner. a crank secured by its end to a disc forming a rasp and closing the outlet opening of the magazine, while a pusher, independent or articulated on the latter, makes it possible to press the material contained in the magazine against the disc. - that which is animated by a rotary movement by the crank.
@
The frame of these rasps is generally made of cast iron; They are, therefore, heavy and bulky and relatively expensive due to the amount of metal required for their manufacture.
The disc forming a rasp is only held in its center by the axis of the crank; it must therefore be made of relatively thick metal, often reinforced by stamping, in order to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
see resist without deformation to the high pressure it undergoes in cantilever.
This results in an increase in the quantity of metal used and, consequently, an increase in the cost price. In addition, the thickness of the metal constituting the disc necessitates delicate sharpening and the effects of which cease to appear after more or less prolonged use.
The present invention relates to a household rasp, made of light materials: thin sheet and metal wire, of a low cost and which can be supported by hand or placed on a container or on a table.
This grater, which comprises a magazine secured to a handle on which is articulated a lever terminated by a pusher intended to enter the magazine and possibly a repository or feet, this magazine being open at its two opposite ends of which the one, lower, is closed by a disc forming a rasp driven by the axis of a crank, is more particularly characterized by the following main points which may exist separately or in combination: a) The magazine serves as a support for the disc that it maintains at least one point of its periphery. b) The rasp disc is made of thin sheet metal with a flanged edge and preferably evenly distributed reinforcing ribs extending from the center to the periphery.
The constitution of the thin sheet disc has the advantage of eliminating sharpening without the duration of use being able to influence the performance of the apparatus. c) The ribs are arranged in a star. d) The ribs are arranged in a star with curved branches.
This arrangement allows the length of the ribs to be increased.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
res and consequently that of the alignments of perforations which are necessarily similar to the ribs. e) The disc forming a rasp comprises in its center a cylindrical hole provided with at least one flat, while the end of the axis of the crank has an identical section ensuring the rotary drive of the disc. f) The magazine is secured, preferably by the intermediary of a housing, to at least one hook intended to receive the peripheral part of the disc and arranged so that the center of the magazine is located at the center of the disc. 'inside the area between this or these hooks and the center of the disc. g) The hooks supporting the disc are distributed over an arc of circumference at most equal to 180.
h) The hooks are contiguous and form a continuous gutter. i) The hooks are distributed over the entire periphery of the disc, at least one of them being able to slip out. j) The eclipse hook is provided with a locking means. k) The crank is placed on the same side as the magazine in relation to the disc.
1) The crank is placed on the opposite side to that on which the magazine is located. m) The crank is attached directly to the periphery of the face of the disc opposite to that which has the protruding perforations. n) The crank finished in the form of a fork is placed astride a groove made in an axis carried by the magazine, while a puncture in the disc locks the rod of the crank.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
o) The folded edge of the magazine is provided in the vicinity of its center with hooks reported or constituted by punctures and distributed at most over a half-circumference affecting the area of application of the pressure of the pusher, while the disc comprises an attached washer forming a rebate and intended to receive the hooks.
p) The disc has a groove formed in its fallen edge and intended to receive two jaws of arched wire, extending the branches of the handle joined by a spacer and serving as an articulation axis for the rod of the pusher, while the magazine is secured to two symmetrical metal wires, terminated at each end by a hook, two of these hooks being slidably mounted on the branches of the handle and the other two being hooked onto the ends of the jaws so to lock the disc.
q) The active face of the disc is integral with a sleeve that is concentric with the hole through which the drive crank axis passes and ends with a square collar, while the magazine carries, perpendicular to its side wall, two parallel guides intended to receive two diametrically opposed points of this collar so as to support the disc together with the peripheral hooks. r) The axis of the drive crank passes through the superimposed holes of two parallel supports carried by the side wall of the store and is held in position by the pressure exerted on it by a leaf spring carried by said wall.
s) The supports for the crank axis, the guides receiving the flange integral with the disc forming the rasp and the blade now exiting the axis of the crank are made from a single sheet attached to the magazine, of generally recangular shape, suitably arched and cut in its middle part on three of its sides so as to constitute a protruding puncture forming a spring.

This rasp comprises a magazine M provided with a square rim b forming a housing and covering part of the disc D in the example but capable, in certain cases, of covering it entirely. This magazine is secured to a handle of metal wire suitably arched and attached for example by welding.
On the end of this handle is articulated the rod t of a pusher P intended to enter the magazine and to press the material to be grated against the disc D. A support r, which is moreover optional, also made of wire and attached to the magazine, enables the apparatus to be supported on a receptacle.
The disc D is driven by its center by a suitably guided crank m. This crank is placed on the same side as the pusher in fig. 1. It can also be placed below the latter (fig. 3), which saves on metal by reducing the length of the axle. Finally, the axis can be completely omitted (fig. 4), the crank m being then fixed radially under the disc D. It is essential to provide for the latter guide means, the different embodiments of which will be later. described in detail.
Fig. 5 shows an alternative embodiment in which the housing b completely covers the disc. This arrangement allows, among other advantages, the adoption of R legs by which the apparatus can be placed on a table.

Figs. 6 and 8 schematically represent the three positions that the store can occupy. In fig. 6 it is placed on the line of centers AO and between them; in fig. 7 it is placed on the same line but outside. It is then necessary for the push rod to be subdivided into two branches on either side of axis 0 to allow passage of the crank axis.
Finally, in fig. 8 the store is offset from the AO line; thanks to this arrangement, the pusher is cocked over its entire length and the bending moment is reduced during operation, which prevents any deformation detrimental to the performance of the apparatus.
The symmetrical arrangement of the store could obviously be adopted with the same advantage.
Figs. 9 to 14 show schematically in axial section and without this being able to present any limiting nature, six embodiments of discs forming rasps and which are made of thin sheet; they all have a flanged edge, which may or may not be parallel to the axis. That of fig. 14 also has a flat peripheral ring e.
In order to increase their rigidity, these discs are provided, in accordance with the invention, with rectilinear radial ribs f, (fig. 15) or curved f, (fig. 16). The curved ribs obviously have a greater length and allow an increase in the number of perforations whose alignment follows that of the ribs.
According to the invention, the disc, always held by its center, is held and guided by at least one point of its periphery; the peripheral guide points are arranged so that the store, which constitutes the application center of the braids, is so-killed in the area between these points and the center of the disc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
In fig. 17 and 18, the peripheral guide means of the disc consists of a hook h attached to the housing b; the disc is put in position by displacement following arrow f.
In fig. l, 9 and 20, the housing carries two hooks h1, hp.
In fig. 21 and 22, the casing is integral with a lower gutter i.
The fraction of the edge of the casing to which the hooks are fixed or that which is integral with the gutter is at most equal to half a circumference so as to allow the installation and removal of the disc.
The hooks can also be distributed over the entire periphery of the housing when the latter covers the entire disc; it suffices that one or more of them are mounted eclipse to allow the assembly.
In fig. 23 and 24 the housing b has a flanged angled edge to which are fixed, for example by welding, two tabs h1, h2 forming a hook, while a hook h3 is slidably mounted in a slide 1 attached to the housing . A swing lock j provides locking during operation. : ..
The disc D is introduced obliquely as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 24.
The lock h3 can also be mounted oscillating about an axis m as shown in FIG. 25.
The invention also provides a means for guiding and supporting the disk in the vicinity of the center as shown in FIGS. 26 and 27.
The latter is constituted by hooks n1, n2, in the number of two diametrically opposed in the example and which are here constituted by two punctures made in the casing, which comprises a cylindrical hole bordered 1 allowing the passage of the axis of the crank. The disc is secured to a washer s, attached by
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
hard electric or by any other means, which engages under the two hooks.
It is therefore supported by the two peripheral hooks h1, h2 and by the two middle hooks ni, n2.It thus perfectly resists the significant bending forces it undergoes in the store area and ensures a completely satisfactory performance. of the device. placed
The drive of the disc by the crank in its center can be carried out either in the usual way by screwing, or more simply by means of flats made on the end of the rod and which penetrate into a cutout of the same section. . This arrangement simplifies machining.
Fig. 28 represents a removable method of mounting a crank m on the disc D. The crank ends with a fork u, while the disc D is provided with a cylindrical cutout v and a slit z forming elastic locking member.
The magazine housing is integral with an x axis with y groove. of diameter substantially corresponding to the gap between the legs of the fork. The disc is threaded on the x axis, then the fork e is placed astride the groove y, and finally the rod of the crank is engaged under the slit z. The latter is, of course, oriented in a direction which corresponds to the normal direction of rotation.
Figs. 29 to 31 show the assembly of a conical disc D1 (fig. 30) or in the form of a spherical cap D2 (fig. 31).
The housing b obviously has a shape corresponding to that of the disc which is maintained by two peripheral hooks and by two middle hooks similar to those which have been previously described.
These two forms of disc have the advantage of eliminating the rib, the bending resistance being increased and of increasing the number of holes as a result of the increase in the useful surface of the rasp.
Figures 32 to 34 show a rasp in which the disc D3 (fig. 34) provided with a peripheral groove 1 is held around its periphery by two jaws 2, 2 each formed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
not by a bent metal wire, one of the ends of which is raised at 3, 3a. The other end of these son extends at 4, 4a so as to constitute the handle; branches are joined by a spacer 5, while their end parts folded down at right angles serve as an articulation axis for the push rod P.
The magazine is supported by two wires 6, 6a welded to it and sliding on the wires 4, 4a of the handle by loops 7, 7a
The disc is locked by means of the jaws 2, 2a which penetrate its peripheral groove by sliding the loops 7, 7a on the handle and by introducing the end loops 8, 8a on the ends 3, 3a of the jaws. . Additional locking is obtained by introducing the handle which passes through a hole 9 made in a tab 10 integral with the magazine.
The disc can also include a crank directly attached, either permanently or removably, for example as shown in FIG. 28.
The disc rasp shown in Figs. 35 to 47 essentially consists of a magazine M in thin sheet provided with two annular grooves 11, 12 projecting outwardly and secured by its base to a perpendicular flat part 13 limited by a fraction of annular crown 14 of low height. The latter is integral with three hooks 15 serving as peripheral support points supporting the disc during operation of the rasp, as will appear subsequently.
Between the annular projection 12 and the flat part 13 is attached, for example by electrical welding points, a tail p of rolled sheet metal, on the end of which is articulated, by means of an axis 16 , the end of the rod t formed in one piece with the pusher P by stamping and bending a sheet. The sections of the rod and of the pusher are shown in section respectively in Figs. 42 and 43.
On the external wall of the store is attached, for example
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
ple by electrical welding points, a part 17 of sheet metal of generally rectangular shape, the upper end of which is folded back to square at 18 and provided with a hole 19, intended to receive the axis a of the crank. The lower end, of greater width, is straightened at 20 and provided with a hole 21 co-axial with the preceding one, while the lateral edges are as it appears in FIG. 39, so as to constitute two slides 22 which follow two parallel walls 23.
The part 17 also comprises in its middle part a slit 24 curved outwardly so as to form a spring and to keep the axis of the crank engaged in the holes 19 and 21 of the supports 18 and 20. Finally, the sheet 17 dominates a transverse corrugation 25 determining with the wall of the magazine 13 a housing in which is introduced and held by welding (Figs. 23 and 28) one of the ends of a support r made of metal wire conformed as shown in the figure. The other end of this wire is engaged and held similarly in the housing formed by a corrugation 26 of a metal strip 27 attached to the base of the store.
The disc D4 (fig. 36, 44, and 45) is made of thin sheet metal provided with an edge 28 turned back square. It comprises ribs f4 arranged in a star shape and regularly distributed and perforations g4 located between the ribs and provided, in a known manner, with a projecting edge ensuring the cutting of vegetables and other foods.
The disc D4 is integral with a concentric cylindrical cup 29 provided at its upper part with a flange 30 turned back at right angles and at its base with a central hole 31 of elongated shape intended to receive the end 32. of the same section of the shaft a of the crank which is thus rotatably secured to the disc. This disc is also integral, by its lower face, with a concentric bowl 33 of flared shape and which opposes the access of the food parcels to the axis.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
It should be noted that the distance which separates the lower faces of the collar 30 and of the disc is substantially equal to that which separates the upper faces of the slides 22 and of the hooks 15. Likewise the distance separating the walls 23 preferably corresponds , substantially to the diameter of the bowl 29.
The assembly is carried out by inserting the edges of the collar 30 into the slides 22; side wall of the bowl 29 is centered thanks to the walls 23, while the disc rests by its edge on the upper face of the hooks 15.
The end of the axis a of the crank is then engaged in the perforations of the supports 18 and 19, then in the elongated hole 31 of the disc; the crank is locked by the lateral pressure exerted on the axle by the puncture 24 forming a spring.
The thin sheet disc reinforced by its flanged edge and by the star-shaped ribs is maintained both at its center and at three points on its periphery corresponding to the hooks; it thus withstands without deformation the pressure exerted by the pusher inside the quadrilateral thus formed.
