EMI2.3

On ajoute immédiatement

acetone obtained gives c- (4-methyl-phenyl) - (-rae tllrlaminopropane by catalytic reduction in the presence of methylamine in alcohol.
This new combination comes in the form of a colorless oily liquid, having a basic odor and a boiling point of 104-1060. It is not very soluble in water and, with acids, gives neutral salts which are easily soluble in water. With hydrobromic acid we obtain a hydrobromide, which can be crystallized in a little alcohol or in a mixture of alcohol and ether in the form of small colorless needles, melting at 159.
This combination can be used as a medicine.
Bxample.
30 parts by weight of sodium are dissolved in 38 parts by weight of absolute alcohol. This solution is heated in a reflux condenser. A mixture of 131 parts by weight of p-methyl-benzylcyanide and 131 parts by weight of dry ether-acetic salt is poured in dropwise and heated for 2 hours in a reflux condenser.

After standing for a while, some of the condensation product precipitates out as the crystallized sodium salt. Most of the solvent is removed by partial evaporation in vacuo, the residue is dissolved in about 1000 parts by weight of ice-water, the filtered solution is acidified and ice-cooled with acetic acid. The oily liquid which separates out is taken up with benzene or ether, the solution separated from the condensation product is washed with water and evaporated. By vacuum fractionation, the nitrile of Ó - (4-methyl-phenyl) - -oxobutyric acid is obtained as an oily liquid, having a boiling point of 155-158 and a melting point of 98 .
6 parts by weight of the nitrile are poured dropwise with stirring into 60 parts by weight of 80% sulfuric acid and cooled with ice. The reaction product is held, when dissolution is complete, for about 2 hours at 80-100. The mixture is then allowed to cool, an amount of water approximately 10 times greater is added with rapid stirring and the mixture is heated for a few hours in a reflux condenser. After cooling, the resulting brown oily liquid is separated and purified by vacuum distillation. A good yield of (4-methyl-phenyl) -acetone is obtained which is in the form of a colorless oily liquid having a boiling point of 104-1060.
50 parts by weight of a 25% solution of methylamine in absolute methyl alcohol are added, while cooling with a cooling mixture, 20 parts by weight of (p-methyl-phenyl) -acetone. We immediately add

2 parts by weight of Raney nickel catalyst, which is made as anhydrous as possible by washing with methyl alcohol and reducing at a pressure of a few atu and at a temperature of 90-100. The calculated amount of hydrogen is absorbed in a short time. After cooling, the catalyst is separated by decantation, the solvent is evaporated off and the residue is fractionated in vacuo.
Ó- (4-Methyl-phenyl) -ss-methylamino-propane is obtained in good yield as a colorless oily liquid having a boiling point of 104-106. It has a basic odor.
