<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Pipe connection
The present invention relates to the connection of a tube to another body such as a reservoir, a junction piece, a machine casing, etc. It can be applied preferably, but not exclusively, to the connection. tubes made of ductile material such as copper which must be subjected to pressure

relatively high for which it is not advisable to use gaskets made of a softer material than that of the tube itself.
According to the invention, the tube is pressed around a ring with a convex outer profile, and the head thus formed is subjected to an axial pressure which maintains it against a seat provided in the body to which the tube is to be connected.
The ring may, for example, include, as outer surfaces, two frustoconical surfaces oriented in opposite directions. The material from which it is made will preferably be harder than the wall of the tube; for a copper tube, we can, for example, make the steel ring.
The axial pressure which holds the head of the tube against its seat can be produced by means of a threaded clamp, either a nut or sleeve with an internal or external thread. Preferably, another ring can be interposed between the clamp and the head of the tube.
-To protect the tube against bending forces which could cause it to break in the vicinity of the head, the clamping piece can be extended by a sleeve which surrounds the tube over a certain length from its connection.
In the accompanying drawing, an embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example only; it must be understood that other embodiments are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.

The appended drawing shows the connection of a tube a, which will be assumed to be made of copper, to any machine body, indicated at b. The end of the tube a is pressed around a ring c of mild steel, stainless steel or other material harder than copper. This ring has, on its exterior, two frustoconical surfaces d and e oriented in opposite directions, and an intermediate surface f which is cylindrical and which constitutes the zone where the ring ±. has its largest external diameter. The profile of the outer surface d, f, e of the ring is therefore convex as a whole.
To stamp the tube a around the ring c, we start by widening the end of the tube along the surface d by means of a conical mandrel. Then we place the ± ring. in the enlarged portion of the tube, and finally the tube wall is pushed against the surfaces and f.
Behind the head thus established, a ring g and a tightening nut h encircle the tube: they can be threaded onto the tube either from its opposite end or before the head is established. The ring g comprises, on its internal part, a conical seat k which comes to rest on the head of the tube, opposite the surface d of the. inner ring c. By its opposite face, the outer ring is supported on an inner shoulder r of the nut h, in which it is also centered at 1.
The body b is provided with a boss m which has a conical seat for the head of the tube a and an external thread .9. onto which the nut of. tightening h. The latter extends towards the rear in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a sleeve m which surrounds the tube has over a certain length with little play, so as to limit its deformations and to protect it from breaking.
When tightening the nut h, the shoulder acts on the outer ring g to press it, in the direction of the axis of the tube, towards the boss n.
Therefore, the wall of the tube a is clamped on the one hand between the conical seat k of the outer ring and the surface d of the inner ring c, and on the other hand between the surface of the inner ring ± and the seat p provided in boss n. Thanks to the ductility of the copper which constitutes the wall of the tube a, the contact between the latter and the seat p can be made watertight by sufficiently tightening the nut h.
The invention also comprises, as new industrial products, all installations, machines or devices in which the connection of one or more tubes is carried out using one or more of the characteristics described above.
