<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Gasifier for motor vehicles"
In patent N 439,142 it has been described a gasifier for motor vehicles, characterized by the fact that it comprises a cast iron hearth surrounded by a water-boiler in tackle, this boiler being preferably fed @ - - the intervention of 'a filter and a nozzle delivering ... @ adjustable quantities, this boiler further comprising an exhaust to the open air and an overflow.
The present invention relates to improvements in this type of gasifier and essentially consists in replacing the cast iron hearth with a water cooling grid. This grid will have a flat upper surface in the type of hearth provided with star-shaped grid passages, so that the set of grid passages is small With respect to the surface of the grid and the background of gas in general: d 'elsewhere, these two dimensions are
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to be determined in accordance. the production of gas that the gas generator must ensure. The other improvements will be set out in the description below.
In the appended drawing, these various improvements have been illustrated and FIGS. 1 and 2 show in particular in schematic vertical section two embodiments, FIG. 3 showing the grille alone in plan view.
The gasifier body is fitted inside at a height point with a funnel 30 separating the hearth part from the fuel store. At the bottom of the gasifier is disposed on an annular support, the circular grid 31 which has passages 32 arranged in a star in the center.
On the lower side, this grid is integral with a ring or cylindrical sleeve 33 sold casting and which is partially immersed in the water contained in the annular boiler 34 disposed here at the base of the gasifier * This grid therefore undergoes refrigeration perfect which extends to the teeth formed by the passages 32 and this cooling cst so effective that any fusion, corrosion or formation of slag are excluded for this grid.
This constitutes a virtually indestructible element of the gasifier. The relatively small area of the grate in comparison to the total section of the gas generator produces a strong incandescence at the place of the passages of the grate, i.e. dene in the middle of a large mass of coal, which ensures a rich production gas with easy aspiration and refrigeration prevents excessive heating of the metal or refractory walls of the generator, the use of refractories may possibly be abandoned.
The cleaning of the hearth, which is fixedly supported on the boiler 34, can be carried out by a door 41 with leaktight closure and inserted in the side wall of the gasifier body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The constriction in the mass of coal, formed by the funnel 30. is arranged at a suitable height, since this distance may play a role in the formation of tars, and the aspiration of gases ee here made by a duct 42 opening directly below the funnel 30.
It is not necessary to provide for this suction a special screen in order to prevent the entrainment of coal, since below the funnel 30 there is easily a space above the coal descending into the inlet. the hearth and, moreover, the suction is distributed, so to speak, over the total surface of the section of gas at this point. The annular boiler 34 has an overflow 40, which maintains the water at about half the height of the ring 33 of the grid 31.
In the upper part of the ring 33, there are holes or passages 35 opening into the interior and which allow the steam formed in the boiler 34 to be sucked into the central part of the ring 33, to to be mixed there with air, this mixture then being aepiré into the hearth through the slots 32 of the grid 31. The boiler 34 is supplied by the duct 39 according to the terms of the main patent.
In the internal circular space of the annular boiler 34 is fitted a large tubulurp. section 36, which extends to the vicinity of the @ grid and which communicates in its lower part with a duct to which the fan 37 is fitted; the air inlet of this fan is adjustable. In the lower region below the pipe 36 is fitted the door 44 closing the outlet for the ashes. The pipe 38 connected to the boiler 34 allows the escape of the excess steam. The mixture of air and steam, intended for the fireplace, is carried out according to the conditions of the main patent as well as the water supply.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In a variant, the gasifier can be constructed with an air envelope 43 according to FIG. 2, which further reduces the heat radiation and is liable to increase the efficiency. In this case, the fan 37 will be fitted in the upper region of this envelope 34, so that the air drawn in through the hollow base 45 is perfectly dry and hot, which produces an advantageous effect on the internal reactions to the gasifier. .
