Abstract

The furnace has a firebox (14) with a grate (15) on which the green wood, broken down into small fragments, is burned in a thin layer (16) which is constantly fed. The wood is burned in the presence of a pre-heated air flow which is fed downwards through the firebox. The air emerges together with gases from the wood at the bottom to be mixed with tertiary air and fed back up through a combustion chamber (9). After ignition, the gases give off most of their heat in heat exchangers (5,6) before passing through an exchanger/condenser (25). Beneath the firebox and in line with its axis of symmetry the furnace has an open-topped chamber (33) which is connected to the combustion chamber (9). The chamber (33) is closed at the bottom by a shutter unit (39), and its side wall has a series of calibrated apertures (38). A conical manifold (8) is situated beneath the furnace, connecting the lower ends of the heat exchanger and condenser and having its lower end linked to a water column (22) for collecting sediment.
